THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH; THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 6, 1890. LIVE STOCK BEVlEff. The Meanest Cattle Market ETcr Known at East Liberty. THE RUX LARGEST OF THE SEASON. Good Feeders Suffer Least From tfce De cline in Trices. SHEEP -AND SWINE FAIKLI STEADY Office of tittburq Disp.vrcn. 1 EDXL&DAY. 2sorernber 5, 1S90. The oflcrinKS of cattle at Kast Liberty yards for the week were over 200 carloads. The pens were not large enough to hold all that came. Qu.ilitr was a fair averape. There were at least 40 to 50 carloads of good beeves on sale, mostly from Indiana. "While no strictly prime cattle were oflered, there was a goodly number close to prime. Buy ers were present in very small force, a fact easily explained, as the average citizen was ttayinp; at home with a view of depositing his ballot. The few buvers on hand made the most of their opportunity and lorccd the seller to their terms. Markets ononeil very dull on Monday, and have been growing m'ot-c evt.r since. An old-time com mission man. who lia been familiar with the Kasr. l.ihcrtv live -tock market from the bc Cinnincsanl csterdij "I hav e never seen sue h a mean cattle market .it neliae had this week. Common and low-grade stock were v erv luril to sell at any price, and the best grades Mif fcred from the general depression. I'.uvcrs. who were scaice had the held, aril shippers must have lost licavilv on this neel's opera tions." The decline from last week's prices ranged 10 to 69c per cwt., and at the decline markets were v-iyslivv. Good feeders suffered least lrom tin- decline, as thc were in short supply. Th Inchest price obtained was $1 CO for a load of IAjO 2 beeves, coe to prime, which would liaie brought close to So last week. Xot less than 30 loads were chipped on m first hands.for want of customers, fetocknicn this morning were unanimous in the view that there had never been a meaner cattle market than this Week. Miet'l. Lambs and Hogs. There w ere about 21 loads of sheep and Iambs on the market this week. Prices were fairly iteady at last week's ransrc, and. if any differ ence, a shade stronger. Quality of offerings Ehowed some improvement. A large propor tion of receipts were Iambs, and choice stock ua nndoubleilh a little higher than last week. There were over 33 loads of hogs on ile Mon dav. vrrtii a Mnall proportion of corn-fed stock. tsfnee Monday about 10 rarloads have been re tXMVcd. and there has uecn no improvement ill Quality. Tins n orning there vv ere 5 carload-. Ob talc, and ton price was H 40 to M 50. LIVE ST0CE aiAEKETS. Condition of Trade at tbo Kast JJbcrtj Motk lards. CHICAGO Wheat There was good specu lative tra lmg to-day, but mostly on local ac count. The feeling was decidedly weaker, in fluenced some by hnc weather, but rather more by speculative offerings by a prominent local trader than anything else. The increase of wheat and flour on passage and larger Russian shipments lielped create weakness. The open ing was 5SJaC lower thau the closing figures ot Mondiv, immediately sold off c more, became firmer, advancing Jfc, then rased off, prices declining JJc, or to inside figures, and closed about IJiQWc lower thau Monday. i -orn -Moderate trading was reported within a lower range, the feeling prevailing neing eas ier. Offerings were liberal, first sales being J4e undci the closing prices of Monday. altLr winch the market sold off He. rallied some and closed with a loss of 1J(1Vc. A prominent local trader sold freely, which uad a depressing effect on tho market, as also the fine weather and mcreastd offeiings of new corn. Oats were fairly acute, but weaker and lower. The weakness was due to larcer receipts, a decline in wheat and corn and tree offerings by sever d traders, who forced prices for May down34c After tbev closed sellinc a reaction of c followed, but again weakened Je. The near futures were neglected aud sold nearer the May mark. Pork Business was comparatively small, and changes in prices were slight. Openinc sales were made at 5c decline, but this was soon re covered. Later, prices settled back 25c, and the market closeu quiet at inside figure-. Iard A quiet and rather dull feeling pre vailed, and trading wis limited. A Big Jump in Values Kemarkecl Within the Past Month or Two. JAMES G. BLAIKE A LARGE 0WKBK. All Signs Point 10 a Better Supply of Dwell ings in the Near Future. THE KEWS AND GOSSIP OF THE C1TI , Reference waB made in this column a few days ago to the revival of activity in coal lands. Some information on the subject was obtained from Mr. H. W. Stricklcr yester day. He said: "The inquiry for coal lands is very active, and prices have nearly doubled within a month. A sale of 225 acres, located on the Mortngaliela, was made a day or two ago at $225 an acre. Sev eral other smaller sales have been closed at about the same figure. Coal land that could have been bought at $40 an acre two months ago is now held at 100 to 125. I have just secured options on several tracts, ranging from 900 to 5,000 acres, all situated on the Monongabela and Youghiogneny rivers. The outlook for the coal trade was never better. Outside markets have been opened un since natural gas came into general use, which take more than is being pi oduced." f u tint connection it is pertinent to state that Hon. James (J. Bliine owns one of tho most valuable bodies of coal land on the Mononga bela river. It contains about GO acres and lies about a mile above Elizabeth. He values it at 8500 an acre, but has no intention of selling it at that figure, a it is his intention to work It in connection with some other holdings in the same locality. To nil a Great Want, Pittsburg's advantageous position as a manu facturing center, from wbicli sbe cannot be re moved except by extraordinary means not likely to occur, is attracting large numbers of skilled wage earners who would locate here if they could get houses to live in. Tins is a val uable and desirable clas of people, just such as is wanted to give an upward impulse to the activities of the city, and should be wel comed with open arms. Within a suort time many of these trained workmen have visited Pittsburg from other cities and although they were assured of employment, they were unable to secure comfortable quarters to live in at anything like a rental they could afford to pay. They, therefore, concluded to remain whore they were. This must be regarded as a loss to the city. There are too many public spirited people of means in Pittsburg to permit this state of affairs to continue much longer. That there is profit in house, whether sold or rented, is no longer a question, and evidence is not wanting that capitalists will invest in them uext voar to an extent that will matenallyabridgo the dif ference between supply and demand. Two companies will enter the field as early next season as possible, and break ground for about 300 duelling. Between them they have a capi tal of 400,000 or thereabouts, and as much in reserve as may be needed to carry out their plans. One ot these companies has been organ ized, aud the other is so far along that success is assured. This will be a new and most commendable departure in the building bisioryof the citj, and in keeping with its prominence as a man ufacturing and commercial center. At present and heretofore the growth of the city has been restrained by the impossibility of bousing all the people wanting to locate here. This has been pointed out again aud again, but its fre quent iteration has made an impression that promises good results. These wholesale opera tions will have a contagious effect, Tuey will stimulate individual builders and lot owners andengnudera healthy rivalry in an industry of the utmost importance to tbe citv. There is no danger of over-building. If a bouse were put upon every vacant lot in the outskirts it would soon find a purchaser or a tenant. w Business News and Gossip. The stock market had little support yester day, and values suffered. Philadelphia Gas was tbe only strong feature. Plans have been drawn for a Baptist church at Washington, Pa., to cost about S10.000. Rapid transit is doing more than anything else to build up the suburbs. It is a great pro. moter of tbrift. Wherever it goes houses quickly spring up and communities are estab lished. Thcie are few waste places on tbe lines of the street railways. A 510,000 hospital is to be erected in Mead ville earlv next season. Straub Jb Morris report an active demand for lo s in Sclienley View Place. They have sold 14 during the past two days. 'IheKuhn property, on Diamond street, will be knocked down to the best bidder to-morrow. Wilkmsburgers are suffering from a shortare of natural gas. Wood was used by many families yesterday morning lor cooking break fast. Weather and roads having improved some what, work has been recommenced on a num ber of foundations lor building, with a view to getting them under roof before freezing weather sets in. A large number of stoue houses will be put up in the Kast End next year. Real estate brokers continue to report an active inquiry for building lots on all tbe steam and street railwav lines. In the large majority of cases they are wanted for improvement, The Building Record. Eleven permits were taken out yesterday for bouses in various parts of the city. Increased Transactions AH Along the Line London Trices Open With a Boom Unusual Selling of New York Central. NEW YortK, November 5. The stock market to-day was reactionary in its nature, and with increased transactions all along the line ma terial losses were sustained in almost every thing traded in, notwithstanding the fact that many stocks in the early dealings rearhedtbe highest prices for tbe past week. London figures were materially bigber this morning as compared with our final prices of Monday, and this market opened with a boom, everything being from K per cent bigber. The bears soon got to work in Sugar Refineries and the selling was very heavy and attended by con siderable excitement, the stock dropping 4 per cent to 57 in the first half hour, great feverish ness attending the' dealings. Feeble rallies took place in tbo stock from time to time during tho day, but late in the day its price touched 54. a loss of 6 per cent, while at the close it had reached only 55. a net loss for the day of 5 per cent. The selling was eager and heavy, slop orders being uncovered at every down. The general list was favored by the strength of tbe London market and the buying for Lon don account in tbe early trading, but while tbe news of the day, especially that which bad a bearing upon tbe Western railroad situation, had a material influence in creating an im proved feeling on the other side of tbe ocean, a sudden and pronounced weakness was devel oped in tbe Vanderbilts, and tbe list could not withstand such an influence. Tbe selling was well guarded, and opinions differ to-night as to whether it was long or short stock which was supplied in such quantities, but the effect was tbe same in either case, and a decline of 3 per cent in New York Central had tbe effect of de moralizing to a certain extent the wbole list. Lake Shore followed closely, but the other Vanderbilts were comparatively well beld and remained so. Tbe leading shares, howevcr.feit tbe depression and yielded more or less, all showing material losses at tbe close. At tbe lowest points tbe market failed to showanv recupeiative power, although some slight improvement was seen in the last hour; the close was heavy at or neartbe lowest prices of the day. The final changes are witb a few important exceptions, among which Canada Pacific, with a rise of 3 per cent, is most con spicuous, material losses and New York Cen tral is down 2J4, Lake Shore 2, Jersey Central 1. Canada Southern 1. Lackawanna and New England each 1, Chicago Gas, Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific each VA, and others fractional amounts. Tbe railroad bond market failed to sympathize either with the activity or the weakness in the share list and with a busi ness of only $1,083,000 the official changes aro unimportant in all "but a few isolated cases. The tone was fairly steady throughout and Reading 2ds rose to 44. Government bonds have been dull and steady. State bonds have been dull and without feature. Tho J'ost says: About 12 o'clock tbere was a sudden and remarkable change, which iecau with some unusual selling of New York Central and Lake Shore. This was undoubtedly the selling of long stock, which vvas duo to the understanding that the dividends on New York Central will be reduced in consequeuce of the cust of the recent strikes. There was, however, reason for believing that there will bo no reduc tion of the regular 1 per cent quarterly dividend, though it is altogether probable that the extra dividend of of 1 per cent will be omitted this January. But there is no reason for a decline in Lake Shore so far as the prospect of dividends is concerned. We have trustworthy informa tion that the surplus earnings of Lake Shore for 1890 will be at the rate of at least 9 per cent on stock above all charges. Their Dissatisfaction Causes Pennsjlvania Stock to Drop. Philadelphia, November 5. There was considerable excitement in the Phila delphia Stock Exchange this morning, caused by a rapid decline in Pennsylvania Railroad. The stock was very active, and it declined under heavy selling orders. The stock rallied and closed at ol bid. An explanation of the decline, which re ceived some consideration, was that London was dissatisfied with last week's dividend, and was selling the stock for that reason. The new business of the Pittsburg agency of the Equitable Life Assurance Society shows an increase tor the first nine mouths of this year of 51,031.500 over tbe corre sponding months 01 1889.
