CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS. Fourth Annual Convention of the Pennsylvania Union, T. P. S. C. E. A KECEI'TION AT THE CHURCH. Tisitinj; Delegates Given a Warm Welcome by the Local Branch. ELOQUENT ASD INTERESTING TALKS "Onward, Christian soldiers Marching as to war." Sane the 500 delegates of the fourth an nual convention of the Young People's So ciety of Christian Endeavor of Pennsyl vania, at its opening session last night The Fourth avenue Baptist Church was well filled with the delegates and their friends of this city, showing that this sort of Christian work meets with the approval of the average church goers. To the right of the pulpit hangs a banner on which is inscribed the motto, "We Are Laborers Together With God," and to the left is another motto, "One is Your Master Even Christ, and All Ye Are Brethren." Always facing these mottos, and working tinder them, this organization of young peo ple can do great work in the Christianiza tion of the world. According to the address of Mr. J. W. Baer, of Boston, general secretary of the United Societies, Pennsylvania stands second in the list of States as to the numer ical strength o' the order. The workers in the organization look lorward to the greater honor ot standing at the head of the list, which they have hopes of doing. Their order is having a rapid growth in Pennsyl vania, and in fact all over the world. WELCOMING THE GUESTS. Last night was a night of welcome and the local committees made the visiting del egates feel tint they are truly welcome to the city, and the convention gives promise of being a most pleasant as well as profitable one. Bev."H. C. Applegartb. Jr., of the Fourth Bap tist Church, made an eloquent address of w el came on behalf of the churches of the city. During the course of his address he said: JeJlow Worker, in the lonug People's Society of Christian Endeatoi. It is my privilege to address words of wel come to you. It is a noble honor. It is a cere mony not devised to set a glos on scant deeds, but a Teal hearty welcome. You are welcome to our hearts and to our homes, and to every nook and cianny of this section of the earth. It Is now a place beautiful tor location and magnificent to look upon. It is the joy of every Pittsburger. "You arc Endcavorers, and as such we wel come ou. The lime was when the denomina tions looked askance at each other, but now all I. beautifully harmonious. You illustrate a splendid phase of applied Christianity. Theo retical Christianity haa its day. and practical, applied Christianity has taken its place. You are welcome, but words should be the least ex pression. This city and this church should give ou a sple-idid welcome for the work you will ut while among u" On behalf ottue Allegheny County Christian Endeavor Union Re. I . R. Farrand, its Presi dent, welcomed the visitors iu a manner that made them welcome. In his address he said, among other things: "From the shore we see ocean's billows and foam, and inan looking upon it imagine that thati all there is. But down below can be found the seciets of Old Ocean's power. So in the christian Endeavor movement. Many see only tbe flourish, but deep down in our hearts can be found the true spirit of the work. We thank jou lot what we have received and the much moie that wc cxi ect." Mr. J. . Uacr. the Ueneral Secretary. proed an eloquent talker, and his address on the status of the work at large proved the de cided teature of the evening's most interesting f peeche. He said that the Christian Endeavor movement had started nino jears ago in Maine, and now it ha enciK'led the globe and has reached Maine again. 1 li movement em braces societies in evangelical churches. The Presbyterians lead, with the Baptists aua C'ongregationalists having a close race for sec ond place. It now reaches every civilized country, and is sending out missionaries to the heathen lands. A LATTER-DAY CKUSADE. Rev. Dr. Parsley, of Philadelphia, responded to the w elcome ot the Allegheny County Union. He characterized the movement as the Nine teenth century crusade. "Wo nae come to the city of furnaces and illuminations," said the speaker, "on a crusade of helpfulness. We have heard ot Pittsburg's danger of losing one of the chief factors m her prosperity. We in tend to reinforce the supply of natural gas and wc propose that it be illuminating ana warming. ko that when we lfave ou will be brighter and warmer than when wc came. I can most heartily voice the sentiment of the visiting derogates very pleasant part of the programme. 4af erer Hogan served ice cream and cake to thJi party between 10 and 11 o'clook. The salesmen yesterday added three other stores to the list of houses recognizing their assembly: Golastein's, of Sixth street; Wag ner's, ot 'Wood street and Fourth avenue, and Caster's, of Smlthtield stieet. These stores, with Bierman's and the Boston Clothing Com pany, have now agreed to the salesmen's scale for the first time. Of the old stores, A. Can non 4 Co. and Eisner fc Phillips have alone conceded the matter of hours and holidays. The remaining six firms, which have hitherto accepted the terms laid down by the Salesmen's Assembly, have now cast loose from the union. They have obtained sufficient men from outside po'nts to enable them to run their business, and as far as the buving public Is concerned the strike is over, as the routine of the stores yes terday proceed as usual. On the other hand, the labor organisations have taken up the cause of tb strikers, and have promised them support. This means that they will help the salesmen now out of work, financially, until they obtain employment in another direction, and that they will recom mend their members not to patronize those stores which elected to dispense with organ ized assistants. Survey Committee Will Talk Over the Marunrv Street Entrance. SOMEBODY WAKTS TO GOBBLE LOTS Mayor Gourley has been looking carefully into the ordinance to vacate a portion of Marbury street, Fourteenth ward, which was passed at the last meeting of Councils. The Major has looked over the ground, and, from the way he talks, it seems likely that he will veto the bill. He says that he can see no rea son why Marbury street, the only thorough fare that connects Oakland with the river, sbonld bo vacated at its entrance. Homebody, be thinks, wants this strip of ground, 40x105 feet, now a street, for building lots. "If Marbnry street is vacated," said he, there is a large tract of building property, yet unim- E roved, that will not likely ever be worth much, ut which is now fairly valuable. Marbury street could, with reasonable expense, be made one of the best streets in that part of the city, and there is no truth in the statements made by those who wish it vacated thai it is not and cannot ever be a good thoroughfare. I think as long as there Uany property to be injured by it a street should not be vacated because a few abutting property holders desire it. There are a number who oDject to this vacation." Almost the same sentiments were expressed by President Holliday and CouncllmenBigbam and Perry at a.meeting of the Committee on Surveys yesterday. Tho committee had sev eral ordinances contemplating tho vacation of streets before It, among which was one for vacating Juuilla street from Center avenue to Elba street. E. B. Gardener and R. 15. Petty each own houses fronting on Center avenue, andJunilla street passes between their lots, which are on a steep hillside. Junilla street has never been oceoed to travel, but when Messrs. Petty and Gardener purchased, it was with the understanding that there wasa 10-foot street between them, and this strip was used by each for a spiral roadway to their separate borne. Recently they have decided that the street should be vacated, and that they should have the 40 feet divided between them and 20 feet added to each of their properties. An ordi nance was presented to Councils, where it was referred to the committee which met yester day. After both sides had been heard the ordi nance was ordered to be reported with a nega tive recommendation, and two others of the same character, vacating Holden street from Spachr street to College avenue, and Georgia street from Spacbr street to Ligget's lane, were postponed until the next meeting, to allow in vestigation. ANOTHER FALSE ROTHOE StartedJAbout the BrosI Forgery Case on the Southside. It is now confidently expected that Brosi, the alleged Southside forger, will bo brought back from Canada within the next few days. As stated in these columns on Monday, the final argument in his case was made last Saturday, and it was reported on the Southside last night that the officials here bad been notified to go after the prisoner. The rumor was denied, however, at the Twenty-eighth ward station house, the officials there saying there was nothingnew in the case. They admit, though, that they may be called away any time.
