GUILT! ASJND1CTED,
Jolin Paradine's Own Evidence Taken
as Positive Proof That He Didn't
Kill Old Dr. Campbell
IN SELF DEFENSE, AS HE CLAIMED.
Bis Counsel Spring a Sensational Point,
Which is Overruled, but Will
Jnot Be Forgotten.
HAETEX BOLLMAK'S WILL IB FILED.
Two TOicenes Hive to Py for intstug a Eu Who
Eli Dene No Wrong.
John Paradine was placed on trial before
Judge White yesterday on a charge of in
Tolnntary manslaughter.
The defendant -was indicted for killing J.
M. Campbell, a Teterinary surgeon, 74 years
old. Some boys were teasing Campbell,
when he tamed on ihem and struck a son of
the defendant. Mr. Paradine then struck
Campbell, and it was claimed the blow
caused his death.
After the jury in the case had been drawn
and placed in the box, "W. J. Brennen, Esq ,
and William Beardon, Esq., counsel for the
defense, moved to quash the whole array of
jurors. Mr. Brennen stated that the Sheriff
and Jury Commissioners did not draw the panel
lecally, Mr. Brennen f urtherargued that it has
been the habit for years to do the drawinc with
out takinc the oath prescribed by law. consider
ing that tbe oath of office taken by tbcm would
cover all legal proceedings. Tbe law. however,
makes it obligatory upon them to take a special
oath every time they make a,tpecial drawinc of
jurors. The manner in which they were drawn
was lUeeal. and the Court was referred to the
acts ot ISM. 1S69 and 1ST.
The motion was overruled by Judfre White,
who stated that the point was one which un
questionably deserved immediate and serious
conMO.er.uion on uie part 01 me onenn.
The case was tlien taken up. Tbe defense
outlined its policy as being that of sell-defense,
and that the prisoner -was innocent of any in
tention to cause tbe death of Mr. Campbell.
The prosecution proved the striking of the de
ceased by the defendant.
Sir. Paradine, when placed on the stand, tes
tified that when be shoved or strock tbe de
ceased, Campbell's back was turned to bim.
Tbis settled anv question of self-defense, and
Judge White refused to allow any further testi
mony on that ground.
The arcuments to the jury were very short,
as was tbe Court's charge. Tbe jury tben re
tired, and after being out two hours, returned
a verdict convicting tbe defendant of the
charge of Involuntary manslaughter.
CALLING DOWN COUNTEBFEITEES.
United States Officers Keeping a Good Eye
on Them.
In the United States District Court yester
day Simon Fritz, alias John Falk, was con
victed of passing counterfeit money. Fritz was
arrested by tbe Allegheny police while passing
some of tbe coin in Allegheny. One hundred
and eighteen counterfeit half dollars were
found in his possession. United States De
tective JlcSneeney worked up tbe case and
traced Fritz and a companion named "John
Pfelffer from Chicago, whence they started out
with $1,000 worth of counterfeit half dollars in
their possession. They went to Detroit, Cleve
land, Columbus and Pittsburg, distributing the
coin. When Fritz was arrested in Allegheny
Pfeiffer jumped out and returned to Chicago.
He was arrested, there, and is now on his way
to Pittsburg for trial. His case will como up
to-day.
These men put considerable coin in circula
tion, and it was some of tbe same that Reese
and Porter, who were arrested on the South
side, had in their possession. They were dis
charged by the United States Commissioner,
and Detective McSweeney now says there is no
question but what they were innocent men, and
obtained the coin legitimately.

THE FIELD SITUATION.
PRODUCTION AT WILDWOOD
FALLING OFF.
SURELY
A Big Transaction Reported From the
Shannopin Territory Some Ventures
Which Are Not Very Promising Wells
and Rumors of Wells.
The general aspect of tbe field situation
remains unchanged from yesterday's report.
The production at Wildwood, is tolling off,
and conservative estimations do not make
the output more than 5,500 barrels a day.
Tbe Harly well is 12 feet in the sand to
night, with no indications of oil. The rock:
is hard and dark, and unless there's soon a
change for the better the ventnre may be
classed as a duster. The Ringheisen well is
four bits in the sand to-night, which is of
nn inferior nature.
The Kerr Bell, at Coraopolis, is reported to
night as doing six barrels an hour. Tbe Pat
terson Jones well, on tbe McCnrdy farm, was
drilled deeper to-day, and to-nlcht is flowing
from 35 to 40 barrels an bour. It was reported
this afternoon that a flftb-sand well had been
struck at puff City, on the Pefader farm, which
was doing 200 barrels a day. The rumor could
not be verified, and a pipe line official said to
The Dispatch that there was but little foun
dation for tbe report. Tbe Butchers well, at
Bakerstown. bas declined to eight barrels an
bour, and the Guckert t Steele, in the 100
foot, and tbe Saxonburg gusber
are also falling of. At Charters
tbe Fisber Oil Bompany are in the sand with
their Dickson No. 4, which Is showing tor a
good well. Tbe venture is located in cloe
proximity to their Stclnmiller well. Tbe Bull
creek well, located in West Virginia, near
Waverly and $) miles southwest from the
Eureka field, was sbot yesterday and will make
a IS or20-barrel well, although the owners esti
mate it good for SO or 40 barrels. In this ven
ture there was 80 feet of sand, which was
struck at a depth of 1.995 feet. This is re
garded as .one of the most im
portant developments in tbe Old Do
minion for sometime, as it shows an extension
of available territory sonthwest from tbe old
Eureka pool. Last night the National Tran
sient pump station at Shannopin caught fire
and was destroyed. Credence was given a re
port to-night that alOO-barrel well was struck
tbis afternoon at Jack's Rnn, bnt upon inquiry
it turned ont to be a 15 or 20 barrel welL Tbe
many friends of Messrs. Finegan & Downing
are glad to congratulate tbem upon tbeir suc
cess in tbe Shannopin field. Tbev have just
sold their possessions here to C. W. Schofiela,
of Jamestown, Pa., which comprise 200 acres,
with 22 wells producing 175 barrels a day, for
S11Q.000.
Jamestown C. V. Schofield has just con
cluded tbe purchase of an oil tract located in
the Shannopin oil field, 15 miles below Pitts
burg, with one-eigbth royalty The former
owners were C. P. Collins, ot Bradford, M. Fin
negan, ot Olean, and J. B. Downing, of Eldred,
Tbe tract consists of 2S0 acres of land, on which
are located 22 producing wells, with a total out
nut of 150 barrels of oil per day, on which there
is a premium of 15 cents. The price was $110,
000, and tbe property was paid for outright, Mr.
Schofiela receiving it unencumbered.

Catarrh to Consumption.
Catarrh in its destructive force stands next
to and undoubtedly leads on to consumption.
It is therefore singular that those afflicted with
tbis fearful disease should not make it the ob

tbe confidence ot tbe great majority of suffer

resigned to a life of misery rather than torture
themselves with doubtful palliatives.
But this will never do. Catarrh must be met

' MANENTCUREOFTENMONTHB.
By the Catarrh Specialists, who are permanent
ly located at 323 Fenn avenue. His disease was
ot seven years' standing and had baffled tbe
skill ot many doctors. The catarrhal muens
that gathered in his throat extended to his
lungs, and a cough set in. He felt soreness and
cam in his longs and around his shoulder
blades. His tbroat became sore and ulcerated,
breath short, eyes weak, and had much pain
over tbem. He lost flesh and bad night sweats,
which weakened him very fast. He says:
"My disease was even worse than has been de
scribed. I was afraid I had consumption. It
is now over ten months since I became cured,
and not que of the above symptoms has re
turned. I welch more than ever before, feel
well and strong, and it gives ma pleasure to add
my testimony with the hnndreds already pub

"My trouble beean aboot six years ago, when

said ilr. F. V. Withers, a well-known Alle

taken with frequent nose-bleed, and some days
it woold bleed several tiroes. Soon my nose
became raw and sore on both sides and it be
came so stopped up that I conld scarcely breathe
through it. I bad pain about my eyes, dizziness
and noises in my bead. In tbe morning there
seemed to be a shadow over my eyes. Then the
catarrhal secretion besan to drop into my throat,
causing me to hawk and spit.
"Finally, al ter suffering for about three years,
I took typhoid pneumonia, and from that time
I rapidly grew worse. My lungs became very
weak and I felt a tight, oppressive feelingin my
chest; my breath became short and a congb set
in. My appetite failed, bad a full, uncomforta
ble feeling after eating, and my stomach felt
very sore and tender. I could not sleep well,
and I had a weary, tired feeling. Every change
of weather would causo ma to take cold, night
sweats weakened me and 1 lost flesh.
"Having seen several testimonials of cures
made by the Catarrh Specialists at 823 Fenn av
