MSau33D -3f3f 8 THE PITTSBUKQ DISPATCH, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1890. I GUILT! ASJND1CTED, Jolin Paradine's Own Evidence Taken as Positive Proof That He Didn't Kill Old Dr. Campbell IN SELF DEFENSE, AS HE CLAIMED. Bis Counsel Spring a Sensational Point, Which is Overruled, but Will Jnot Be Forgotten. HAETEX BOLLMAK'S WILL IB FILED. Two TOicenes Hive to Py for intstug a Eu Who Eli Dene No Wrong. John Paradine was placed on trial before Judge White yesterday on a charge of in Tolnntary manslaughter. The defendant -was indicted for killing J. M. Campbell, a Teterinary surgeon, 74 years old. Some boys were teasing Campbell, when he tamed on ihem and struck a son of the defendant. Mr. Paradine then struck Campbell, and it was claimed the blow caused his death. After the jury in the case had been drawn and placed in the box, "W. J. Brennen, Esq , and William Beardon, Esq., counsel for the defense, moved to quash the whole array of jurors. Mr. Brennen stated that the Sheriff and Jury Commissioners did not draw the panel lecally, Mr. Brennen f urtherargued that it has been the habit for years to do the drawinc with out takinc the oath prescribed by law. consider ing that tbe oath of office taken by tbcm would cover all legal proceedings. Tbe law. however, makes it obligatory upon them to take a special oath every time they make a,tpecial drawinc of jurors. The manner in which they were drawn was lUeeal. and the Court was referred to the acts ot ISM. 1S69 and 1ST. The motion was overruled by Judfre White, who stated that the point was one which un questionably deserved immediate and serious conMO.er.uion on uie part 01 me onenn. The case was tlien taken up. Tbe defense outlined its policy as being that of sell-defense, and that the prisoner -was innocent of any in tention to cause tbe death of Mr. Campbell. The prosecution proved the striking of the de ceased by the defendant. Sir. Paradine, when placed on the stand, tes tified that when be shoved or strock tbe de ceased, Campbell's back was turned to bim. Tbis settled anv question of self-defense, and Judge White refused to allow any further testi mony on that ground. The arcuments to the jury were very short, as was tbe Court's charge. Tbe jury tben re tired, and after being out two hours, returned a verdict convicting tbe defendant of the charge of Involuntary manslaughter. CALLING DOWN COUNTEBFEITEES. United States Officers Keeping a Good Eye on Them. In the United States District Court yester day Simon Fritz, alias John Falk, was con victed of passing counterfeit money. Fritz was arrested by tbe Allegheny police while passing some of tbe coin in Allegheny. One hundred and eighteen counterfeit half dollars were found in his possession. United States De tective JlcSneeney worked up tbe case and traced Fritz and a companion named "John Pfelffer from Chicago, whence they started out with $1,000 worth of counterfeit half dollars in their possession. They went to Detroit, Cleve land, Columbus and Pittsburg, distributing the coin. When Fritz was arrested in Allegheny Pfeiffer jumped out and returned to Chicago. He was arrested, there, and is now on his way to Pittsburg for trial. His case will como up to-day. These men put considerable coin in circula tion, and it was some of tbe same that Reese and Porter, who were arrested on the South side, had in their possession. They were dis charged by the United States Commissioner, and Detective McSweeney now says there is no question but what they were innocent men, and obtained the coin legitimately.
