HOW TO MIX MORTAR.
An Expert Famishes a Recipe of
Value to Local Builders.

THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI
Everything appertaining to house-building,
whether relating to work or material,
is of prime importance in Pittsburg, where
it is one of the leading industries All
builders know the difficulty of obtaining
good mortar, upon the strength and dura
bility of which everything depends. In
answer to numerous inquiries for directions
as to the best way. to combine and mix
mortar, Prof. Ira O. Baker, of Illinois, hss
contributed to the Society ot Engineers of
that State an exhaustive study of the subject,
from which the following is taken:
Mortar may be made practically non-absorbent
by the addition of alum and potash soap.
One per cent, by weight, ot powdered alum. Is
added to the dry cement and sand, and thor
oughly mixed, and about 1 per cent of any
potash soap (ordinary soft soap made from
wood ashes is very good) is dissolved In the
water used to mix the mortar. The alum and
soap combine and form compounds of alumina
and the fatty acids, which are insoluble .in
water. These compounds are not acted upon
by the carbonic acid of the air. and add con
siderably to the early strength of the mortar.
With lime mortar the alum and soap have a
alight disadvantage. In that the compounds
which render the mortar impervious to water
also prevent the air from coming in contact
with the lime, and consequently prevent the
setting of the mortar. On the other hand, the
alnm and soap compounds add considerably to
both the early and ultimate strength of the
mortar.
This mixture could be advantageously used
In the mortar of outside walls for masonry in
wet places for pointing mortar, for the plaster
ing of cellar and basement walls for lining
cisterns etc The efficiency of the alum and
soap compounds Is shown by the fact that the
walls of the Crotou reservoir, in Central Park,
New York City, were rendered impervious by
simply washing them four times alternately
with the alum and the soap solutions Before
being coated the walls allowed the water to
pass freely. Four coatings two pairs made
a common brick absolutely impervious under a
40-foot bead of water.
The use of the alnm and soap as above would
in ail cases greatly diminish, and in most cases
entirely prevent, efflorescence or "whitewash,"
which so frequently disfigures brick walls

BUSINESS SUSTAINED.
No Worthy Interest Permitted to Suffer for
Want of Money
The local money market was in good condi
tion yesterday, the snpoly of ready funds being
adequate to the demand, which was quite lib
eral. Two banks reported they had nothing
for outsiders but others were not compelled to
discriminate so closely. In all cases regular
customers were taken care of. Rates were
steady at 67. Clearing House balances were
at a Exchanges were 2,653,386 69, and balances
340.678 64.
Again Pittsburg came in ahead of San Fran
cisco in the Clearing House returns for the
week. This is becoming so frequent as to force
tbo conclusion that Pittsburg is running away
from the gem of the Pacific coast. Stronger
evidence of business progress could not be
found. Baltimore is ont of the race altogether.
Quarterly settlements will soon increase the
supply of ready funds This, with the return
of money from the West, after moving the
crops should insure an easy market the re
mainder of the year.
Money on call at New YorK yesterday was
easv, ranging from 2 to 4 per cent; last loan,
3; closed offered at 3. Prime mercantile paper,
57. Sterling exchange quiet but firmer at

the principal feature of the transactions being
the tqueeze of the shorts in Lackawanna, which
gave tone to tho whole market, although the
movements in the rest of the list were gener
ally slight. The effects of the bank statement
were also felt in a more pronounced bullish
feeling on the street, and the aggressive front
wblcb tho bears have lately shown was con
spicuous by Its absence to-day. although there
was still a great deal of talk of liquidation of
long stocks indulged in, and the disposition
was rather to liquidate on the other side of the
account. The movement in Lackawanna was
the only one of note outside of the rise in Sugar
Refineries, while marked weakness was showri
in Chicago Gas in which tbo manipulation for

Atchison, St. Paul and Union Pacific, which

followed the decline In those stocks slowly, but
tho raid was not sufficient to wipe out all the
early gains, and tbo close, while quiet and

the whole, showed more strength to-day than
usual of late. The final changes are generally,
small advances, and Sugar Is up and Lack

Railroad bonds were quiet but there was a
few active spots, and out of a total business of
$1,020,000, Atchison Incomes furnished 176,000
and Texas Pacific seconds 163,000. The market
was fairly steady, however, throughout the
session, and the active issues showed no ma
terial change after the day was over.
Government bonds bare been dull and steady.
State bonds have been dull and without feat
ure. The J'oit says: The higher rates of Interest
for money on call In London than here, make a
tendency to move the loanable capital that
way, but there is also a scarcity of commercial
or any other kind of bills in the market, and
both circumstances combined to make an ad
vance in tbe rates for exchange.
The statement of the Cleveland. Cincinnati.
Chicago and St. Louis (Big Fonr) for the month
of August, show surplus earnings overcharges
equal to 1 4-10 per cent on tbe preferred stock,
and for the two months to Angust 31 a surplus
equal to 2 43-100 por cent on the preferred,
or abont one-half of the 5 per cent annual
dividend on the 10,000,000 preferred. The two
months' proportion of tbe dividend on the pre
ferred calls for 83.832, leaving for the same
two months 165,252 for the common, or equal
to 7 8-10 per cent on the 23,675,000 of common
stock. The two months ot July and August
are among the poorest of tbe year for this com
pany, tho best being the next fire months from
September to January inclusive; but as the net
earnings of these two poor months are in the
proportion of i per cent per annum on the
common stock it appears altogether reasonable
that for the whole year they will be eqnal to
about 6 ner cent on common stock.

Country Produce Jobhlnff Prices.
Tbe customary Monday's quietness is re
ported by commission merchants. Tiiero are
still a goodly quantity of grapes on tbe market
and the situation favors the buyer. Chestnnts
are coming in freely and general drift Is toward
lower prices. The chestnut crop Is reported
above the average yield this season. Hinco tbe
formation of the Oleo Trust prices to the dealer
have been advanced about 4c per pound. The
consumer, who was to be protected by the law
against oleo, is protected with a vengeance,
since he is paying better prices for something
entirely different from dairy products. There
aro rumors that nholesalo dealers of this city
are erasing Government stamps from pacbages
01 oleo and seuinir, sue article xor genuiua
butter at prices double its actual value. Tbe
law against oleo in Its operations Is a huge
farce, as iar as this city is concerned, and its
evil effects are most felt by the consumer,
whom it as designed to protect.
