An Expert Famishes a Recipe of Value to Local Builders. BRICK IMPERYI0US TO WATER. The Brokers Still Unable to Eaise Wind Enoneb. to Fly Their Goods. THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI Everything appertaining to house-building, whether relating to work or material, is of prime importance in Pittsburg, where it is one of the leading industries All builders know the difficulty of obtaining good mortar, upon the strength and dura bility of which everything depends. In answer to numerous inquiries for directions as to the best way. to combine and mix mortar, Prof. Ira O. Baker, of Illinois, hss contributed to the Society ot Engineers of that State an exhaustive study of the subject, from which the following is taken: Mortar may be made practically non-absorbent by the addition of alum and potash soap. One per cent, by weight, ot powdered alum. Is added to the dry cement and sand, and thor oughly mixed, and about 1 per cent of any potash soap (ordinary soft soap made from wood ashes is very good) is dissolved In the water used to mix the mortar. The alum and soap combine and form compounds of alumina and the fatty acids, which are insoluble .in water. These compounds are not acted upon by the carbonic acid of the air. and add con siderably to the early strength of the mortar. With lime mortar the alum and soap have a alight disadvantage. In that the compounds which render the mortar impervious to water also prevent the air from coming in contact with the lime, and consequently prevent the setting of the mortar. On the other hand, the alnm and soap compounds add considerably to both the early and ultimate strength of the mortar. This mixture could be advantageously used In the mortar of outside walls for masonry in wet places for pointing mortar, for the plaster ing of cellar and basement walls for lining cisterns etc The efficiency of the alum and soap compounds Is shown by the fact that the walls of the Crotou reservoir, in Central Park, New York City, were rendered impervious by simply washing them four times alternately with the alum and the soap solutions Before being coated the walls allowed the water to pass freely. Four coatings two pairs made a common brick absolutely impervious under a 40-foot bead of water. The use of the alnm and soap as above would in ail cases greatly diminish, and in most cases entirely prevent, efflorescence or "whitewash," which so frequently disfigures brick walls Basinets News nnd Gossip. Sales of houses before completion are com mon occurrences in this city. This shows that they are in demand. A gentleman who lives In the Twenty-third ward remarked yesterday: "I have it on the best authority that the railroad to Homestead will be built. The scheme has been delayed by difficulty in closing two or three deals but as soon as they are ont of the way something will be done to put the project on its feet." A car load of geese from Kansas City for Philadelphia passed through the city yester dap. They utterly ignored the rule of the road not to put heads out. Twenty-one mortgages were on the Record er's file yesterday. The largest was for 8.000. Six were for purchase money. Between 20 and 30 were paid off. Mr. George Thornton, of Chattanooga, Tenn., was a visitor on Fcnrth avenue yesterday. In speaking of the financial stringency he re marked; "One cause of it. which is generally overloeked, is due to the prosperous condition of the Sontb, where more money is employed than ever before, most of which is drawn from New York. As there is not enough to go round. This diversion ot funds from the usual channels of trade leaves many localities un comfortably short." The Lohr bloct, on Wood street, Wilkins burg. Active Movement In Lnckavrannn Stocks Bears Tlnvc the Cppcr Hnnd on Union Pa cific, Bccnu.o of Unfavorable Re ports ol the Road's Earnings. NEW YonK,Soptcmber 29. The stock market to-day was moderately active during the fore noon and quiet for the remainder of the day. the principal feature of the transactions being the tqueeze of the shorts in Lackawanna, which gave tone to tho whole market, although the movements in the rest of the list were gener ally slight. The effects of the bank statement were also felt in a more pronounced bullish feeling on the street, and the aggressive front wblcb tho bears have lately shown was con spicuous by Its absence to-day. although there was still a great deal of talk of liquidation of long stocks indulged in, and the disposition was rather to liquidate on the other side of the account. The movement in Lackawanna was the only one of note outside of the rise in Sugar Refineries, while marked weakness was showri in Chicago Gas in which tbo manipulation for a decline seems notyet over. t Atchison, St. Paul and Union Pacific, which have been rattled off so vigorously of latc.wero .all artlve.but displayed no pronounced strength, and Union Pacific was still inclined lo drop under the unfavorable prospects ot thefunding bill. The movement in sugar, whlcn was sec ond only to that in Lackawanna, was as Inex plicable, as all of the lato fluctuations In the itock have been, and for the time being It has lost Its influence noon the stocks ifi the railroad list. I Lackawanna opined at llj).4nd during the forenoon was rapidly pushed up to 14S& when the buying slacked iinay and A material reac tion wss had before the clout. Aitbt early buying ilaeked away, however, the bean again came In the front, and Union Pacific, in visw of the rattier unfavorable showing of the earn ings presented a fair BiarkAad was hammored down, In the absence ot support, about 3Vi per cent. 1 AWHHH WM PWJW W KHdlfif S.B4 North American, and the former yielded read ily. Silver was again weak, even In the face of the diminution of the stock of over 1,000,000 ounces during the last ten days Tbo market followed the decline In those stocks slowly, but tho raid was not sufficient to wipe out all the early gains, and tbo close, while quiet and weak, was Generally made at small fractional gains on the opening figures. The market, on the whole, showed more strength to-day than usual of late. The final changes are generally, small advances, and Sugar Is up and Lack awanna while Reading lost y and Union Pacific 1 per cent. Railroad bonds were quiet but there was a few active spots, and out of a total business of $1,020,000, Atchison Incomes furnished 176,000 and Texas Pacific seconds 163,000. The market was fairly steady, however, throughout the session, and the active issues showed no ma terial change after the day was over. Government bonds bare been dull and steady. State bonds have been dull and without feat ure. The J'oit says: The higher rates of Interest for money on call In London than here, make a tendency to move the loanable capital that way, but there is also a scarcity of commercial or any other kind of bills in the market, and both circumstances combined to make an ad vance in tbe rates for exchange. The statement of the Cleveland. Cincinnati. Chicago and St. Louis (Big Fonr) for the month of August, show surplus earnings overcharges equal to 1 4-10 per cent on tbe preferred stock, and for the two months to Angust 31 a surplus equal to 2 43-100 por cent on the preferred, or abont one-half of the 5 per cent annual dividend on the 10,000,000 preferred. The two months' proportion of tbe dividend on the pre ferred calls for 83.832, leaving for the same two months 165,252 for the common, or equal to 7 8-10 per cent on the 23,675,000 of common stock. The two months ot July and August are among the poorest of tbe year for this com pany, tho best being the next fire months from September to January inclusive; but as the net earnings of these two poor months are in the proportion of i per cent per annum on the common stock it appears altogether reasonable that for the whole year they will be eqnal to about 6 ner cent on common stock.
