THE PITTSBTJEG -.DISPATCH, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 189a A CHOICE TO MAKE. Two Organizations Seek to Unionize the Edirar Thomson Mill. TALK ALREADY OP A HEW SCALE. Kew Open-Hearth Furnaces at Homestead Tut Into Operation. IJIPEOTED FACILITIES FOR WOBKING The employes of the Edgar Thomson "Works of Carnegie Brothers & Co. are more or less agitated at the present period about the arrangement of next year's scale. They are also in severe mental afilictiop over the fact that two organizations desire to draw them within their fold, while it is a mooted point as to whether they themselves wish to belong to either. The scale now in vogue has been running for three years and it will expire at the end of the current ye3r. if not reinforced by agreement. The agreement attached to the scale contains a clause under which cither side may terminate the scale by giving no tice of intention prior to October 1, in any year. Conflicting reports are wafted on the breeze concerning the intentions of the men. Some five or sis weeks ago a committee re presenting 400 of the employes of the works waited on Superintendent Schwab and as sured him that they were very content with the existing rates and did not desire any chance. Despite the assurance of a committee of the 400, it is said, on very good authority, that a petition will be presented for an increase oTer present rates, to bo presented, of course, before the expiration of the month. Just what iho reasons are which impel the proposed action are not readily understood, except they are lound in the laudable ambition of every laborer to Ret as much as possible for his hire. According to the firm, the Braddock men earn mil 25 per cent more wages than any other iron workers in the country, and so ought to be satished. Interest is lent to the movement by the fact that both the Amalgamated Association and the Knights of Labor are trying to organize the mill. The latter organization is understood to nave a pretty (rood footing, while the Associa tion will soon have men there, in the words of one of that powerful body. It will be remem bered that the Kmgbts had this mill at one time, but lost it; subsequently the employes arranged with the firm nnder the existing agreement, and the mill lias since been non union. 1 he vice chairman of the firm said yesterday that he w as unaware that a proposition was on foot t" ask for better rates, and did not think it likely. The men earned, as it was, fully 25 per cent more money than any iron workers in the country, and expected thev wonld be con tent to let things be. Under the acreement in voeue either side could terminate it by serving notice prior to the 1st of October eveiy year. Up to this time no notice had been served. OUT FOE 10 CENTS INCREASE. Cliimncr Home Both Strike for This Amonnt to the Dnj's Pay. The finishing boys in the Southside chimney bouses went out jesterday for an increase of S cents per tura They receive 50 cents per turn, or SI per day. and want this latter figure in. creased by 10 cents. Ihe other men cannot work without the boys and about LSD0 men and bovs are idle. The ball was set rolling by the youngsters in Thomas K vans' factory, who submitted a re Quest in writing for the advance. Receiving no reply up to jesterday morning they did not rtart into work. They then turned their atten tion to the bens in the other factories, namely, McUeth'c, Hogan, Evans fc Co. and the Peer less, and succeeded in drawing them out. The houses are all in running order and if the shut down continues the glass will be lost. The rates paid the boys are not included m any of the Hint workers scales, but are mostly controlled by the union. The same trouble oc curred last year. STAETED UP YESTEBDAY. The New Opcn-IIenrib Furnaces Getting Under AVay One In Opernllon. One of the new open-hearth furnaces at Homestead was started yesterday. Three others are about ready to follow. In all there will be eight 20-ton furnaces. A new feature in connection with these furnaces is that all the fctcel is cast in one pit. There is also a charging machine on each side, each of which charges four furnaces. Six cranes are m operation around the pit, four outside and two m the island in the middle. The four outside cranes have seven improved motions invented bv Superintendent Potter. Another improvement it that tbe doors of the furnaces aie raised ana lowered by compressed sir.
