?' J, S" &r '.y THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, 3&TUKDAY, AUGUST 80; 189a 3; & SGHINDERY ZEPHYRS Are the Cause of Mnch Annoyance to t&e Residence of Troy Hill. THE'ABBATOIR OK HERR'S ISITAKD pending Forth Fumes That Drive the Feople Indoors for Refuse. pLEQAL ACTION TO BrTAKEN SHORTLY The citizens of Troy Hill, Allegheny, are considering the advisability of taking steps to hare the abbatoir on Herr's Island re moved. They claim there is a terrible stench arising from it, which makes the hill district almost unfit for habitation. It is also claimed the river water is filled by impurities from the same source. There is not many vigorous objections to that, but the people say they cannot stand it when the impure air is blown in their laces. It was said that the movement was headed by Adam Beineman, but that centleman is at present catching 'salt breezes at Atlantic Citj and not bothering with the stenches at home. He could not be seen. Edwaid Beiueman, however, was found, and though be did notyknow of any imme diate action that would be taken, he said: CAX'X STAND THE SMELL. The stenches that come up from Winter Dillenbach's abbattoir, on Herr's 'Island, are terrible, Ol late I have not heard of any organized attempt to have it removed, although I do not know what my father is doing in the matter. Such action will have to ue taken sometime. "We had a long fight to get the schindery in Butcher's Buu re moved, and now this is just as bad. While there is scarcely any smell about the place on the Island, it is the fumes that are sent out that we catch on the hill. The odor is sickening, and some hot evenings!, actually had to close my house up on Lowry street to shut out the smell. The air is thick with the fumes whenever we have a wind from the south, but when we have a west wind we do not notice it. It is the same, winter or summer, although we can close the house more tightly in the winter. "On the brow of the hill it is not noticed so much, but it sweeps up the little ravines and makes life unbearable in the side streets. I believe it is the cause of so much sickness, although it would be difficult to prove it THREATS OF IXCENDIAEISH. "At one time the feeling on the Hill was so strong that some of the residents threat ened to go and burn the place down. There are complaints about it all the time, and unless some remedy is given we will lace steps to have the abbattoir removed. When it was placed there abont two years ago per mission was given by Councils, I believe, on condition that if any complaints were made it would have to be removed. Bnt that would be a difficult task, as they have a good deal ot influence with the Councilmen. I believe our only way is to go into court and secure an injunction. This course will be taken, but 1 don't know just how soon. "It is a shame to have snch a place right in tbe heart of the city. I don't see how the residents of JLawrenceville stand it, because they must surely catch some of the stench. The refuse which goes into the river con taminates the water, too, and the influx pipe of tbe Allegheny water works is just about a half mile below the island. Of course I would be opposed to turning it down, but some legal steps should and will be taken." Bargains To-Day Id Gents' Furnishing.
