THE'ADYAKCE IS HIDES WEAKENS. jJrices of Wheat and Flonr Going Up at Sources of Supply. .. - -V "&UJJEETI STOCKMEN FIX A SCALE Office of Pittsburg) Dispatch. TUESDAY. August 26. IS90. t " One of our leading shoe jobbers, in an interview to-day, said: "The feature of trade sftin our department js the sharp advance in "prices All materials which enter into shoe manufacturing have advanced in price. Leather is up 1525 per cent in the past month, and there is necessarily an advance in the price of shoes from 1025e a pair. Euhber goods have joined in the upward movement, and are 10 per cent higher than they were a month or two ago. The retail trade has been holding off ofte, evidently with the view that the recent 'rise will lack in staying qualities, and that they can do better by purchasing later on. In my opinion, the retailers who wait till a more convenient season will have to pay more later on. The whole drift of trade is toward bicher prices, and while specnlativc in fluences have come in more or less to stimulate hides and leather, there is a legitimate ad vance. Price had been too low lor a Tear or more past. Shoe manufacturers are not push ing trade as they were compelled to do a year ago. They are not willing to accept orders for fu ture delivery at present prices. As to volume of trade this year so far, shows no decline from last. There bas been no summer lull. Our fall goods will be well cleaned np by Septem ber, and then we begin to get ready for spring trade, which opens abont November.!. Cnrrince Hardware. There are four firms in this city engaged in jobbing carriage and saddlery harness. A rep resentative of one of these firms reports un usual activity in this department of trade and an increased volume of business over last sea son of fully 20 per cent. "The advance in leath er," said be, "will eventually reach onr goods but so lar prices are essentially as they were last season. In former years e had a number of men on therosd soliciting trade. This lias not been necessary this season, as trade cemes tons, and hence some of our heavy expenses have been saved." Eastern tanners, according to reports, are re fusing to par established prices for hides and calf skins. The difference amounts to about ia per round on hides, and there appears to be a deadlock between dealers and tanners. In the "West tanners arc Olivine freely at the advance. While Chicago and B ston prices are quntably the same, there is really a difference ot c per A on hides. At least New England tanners are demandinr this concession. The Wisconsin and Michigan tanners are paring more for stock than can be had in the far East, and a shade more than our Allegheny tanners are willing to pay. Prodnce nnd Rrrndsinin A leading produce commission merchant who spent a day or two lately with the New York produce dealers reports trade in this line quiet in the metropolis. Markets there are flooded with vegetables and California fruits, which are lower in price than here. Potatoes were selling in New Yort on Saturday at 2 SO per barrel, which is 1 below ruling prices here. There is little doubt that Pittsburg is one of the dear markets t the country in fruit and vegetable lines. Trade centers both East and "West report lower prices In general than those which prevail here. Prices or patent flonr are 8550c higher at sources of supply than they were a week ago. It is only a question of a short time when our jobbers here will be compelled to advance rates. Flour can hardly be bought now and sold at our quotations. Bat jobbers are still selling at these figures. As crop reports of late have been in the main favorable to bears, it is good to bear from Ore gon that this season's ulieat crop is the best and largest ever harvested. In the Willamette valley and other famed sections of that State the average yield of wheat is reported at JO bushels to the acre. Hay and oalB also show an extraordinary yield, but the corn cron Is below the average. In Great Britain the wheat harvest is fully on. and results are pannirg out much bettor than the estimates uf a month afro. Toe Lon don Ttm-M estimates this season's yield of wheat in Europe at L245.tWl.00O bu'hels. and the amount needed will be 1.400.000,000 bushels, showing that 153,000,000 bushels will be drawn from America. fietv Movement of Stockmen. Y, 1 1 THE TIME TO MOVE ON Owners of UnprodnctiYe Property Standing in Their Own Light. BETTER TO SELL AND REINVEST. No Improvement In Stock Tradinj, While oil Shows Up Quite Groggy. TEB HEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITI -This is a good time, at the opening of the fall trade, to bring unprodnctive property into tbe market. There is a good deal of it in the city, more than most people are aware of, that could be turned to advantage if the owners would only do it. It is not bringing them more than 2 or 3 per cent, but they re fuse to sell and are unable to improve They hold on, thinking the tide will soon set their way. They have been thinking so for years, but their hopes are unrealized. Considerable of the property in question is in the business quarter of the city, and would bring fair prices. By selline it own ers would not only benefit themselves, but afford business an opportunity to penetrate districts from which it is practically exclud ed for want of accommodations; for with the money thus realized they would be able to invest elsewhere to good advantage, and at the same time open a way to improvement, which is most needed to relieve the bustness pressure. While there Is no disposition to compel own ers of city property that is a barrier to neces sary improvement to dispose of their holdings, even if this were possible, they should not over look the fact that with very little trouble they could double or treble their income by selling and reinvesting, whereas bv holding on they may get better prices and they may not There H an element of uncertainty in the latter case, but not in the former. Tho unpopularity of Buckeye oil or rather dissatisfaction with the conditions under which it was put upon tbe market and so far continued was further manifested yesterday,, when not a transaction in it took place. This is pretty strong confirmation of tbe theory held by some that the Standard has no idea of ad mitting the public to competition with it on equal terms. It was bid up to 350, and offered as low as 35c. Monday's cleanugs were 24.OU0 barrels. There were a fewtrades in Pennsylvania oil, but the market exhibited a weak undertone almost from tbe Starr, and closed at the lowest point. Dnring the session a broker received a telegram "from Oil City, saying: "The Standard is selling." There was nothing strengthening in this. New York was also a seller. MONEY IS EASIEB. Stocks Continue to Improve, bat the Market i Comparatively Doll A Short Lived Boom A Rlso In Sugnr and Railroad Securities. New Yore, August 26. The situation at the Stock Exchange continues to improve and rates for money were down to a reasonable figure for the first time in many days. The market, how ever, made no marked response to the improved? conditions and remained comparatively dnll with slight fluctuations after a spurt at the opening. The positive relief which has been afforded to the money market in tbe past few days, together with the announcement that if enonghhad not yet been done to give ease something more would be tried, dismisses tbe monetary situation as a disturbing factor from the sitnation for the present at least. Tbe 1st of September is close at band, however, and tbe usual shifting and calling of loans, in order to provide for the quarterly payments, must make some trouble during the remainder ot the week. There Is. therefore, no marked dis position to embark in new ventures on the long side even yet. There was a rush to buy at tbe opening this morning and the market opened with a boom, tbe advances over last night's fig ures extending to 1 per cent in the cases of New York Central and Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and St, Louis. The demand did not sustain these high figures, however, and the further Improvement was small when taking of nroUts on the rise led to some selline- bv the bears, which resulted In a fractional reaction with the usual result of dullness and stagnation-. The market continued to present a firm un dertone until the last hour, when tbe buying began in earnest, encouraged by tbe extremely low rates prevalent for money and In a short time advances extending to 1 per cent were established. Sugar refineries led the upward movement and the rumor that 10,000.000 of the stock had been deposited, and while the rumor lacked confirmation, there was no reaction in its rise. All tbe stocks which have been weak est of late were specially prominent in tbe rise and net gains of 2 in sugar; Big Four, 2; Lackawanna, 2J. Denver and Rio Grande pre ferred, 2; Lake Shore, 1. Reauing. 1J; North western, St. Paul, Louisville and Nashville, each ; Atchison, Canada Southern, Canada Pacific, Rock Island and Richmond and West Point, each 1: Missouri Pacific, Northern Pacific preferred, Oregon '1 ranscon tinen tal receipts and Western union, each 1, and Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, 1 per cent each were established. The close was strong at the best figures. Railroad bonds were slightly more active, but failed to develdp any more decided tone, and among the few important changes in quo tations declines are tbe more numerous. The sales were only 593,000 without any special fea tures. Government bonds have been dnll and steady. State bonds have been entirely neglected. The Post says: Considering tbe extreme stringency of the money market last week and tbe gravity of the circumstances, in connection with the bad crop reports and the labor strikes, it is very remarkable that tbe prices of stocks should have so nearly recovered already. There bas not been a time for half a dozen years when stocks would have stood so firmly agaiust the shock of the combined circumstances above mentioned. It shows that speculation in tbe stock market having dwindled down to tbe smallest proportions during June and July, the stocks bad gravitated into tbe strongest hands, and, though the decline from August 1 to AU 'gtfst 22 was from 4 to S points, it did not canse a single failure of any speculator on tbe bull side of tbe market. These facts will count largely in Inspiring a further recovery of 3 to 6 points as soon as the money market appears to be seenre against any severe squeeze. A 6 or S-per cent rate for money will ensue with that much more of a recovery. The Terrible Suffering of a Lady Her Neighbors Thought She Must Die. As further evidence of the cures made bv tho catarrh and dyspepsia specialists of 323 Penrt avenue, and of patients who have suSered from disease in its most aggravated form, ana after they bad exhausted all available means elsewhere, is that of Mrs. Henry Hnnziker, who resides at 219 Colwell street, in the Eleventh ward, of this city. -Urj: Henry H-tnztkcr. Ibe aches and pains she bad in almost every part of her body were simply unbearable. Im mediately after eating, her stomach would be seized with terrible paiu and cramps, which would continue until she would vomit up her food, and tbe gas that formed would canse her stomach to swell as if It would burst. In fare all kinds of food except milk would cause pain. She had pain over her eyes, dizziness and noises in ber ears. Her month would bave a bitter, disagreeable taste every morning. She bad pain In both sides and acro-s the small of her back, and in thenishtif she lay on her left side she would be seized with the most ex cruciating pain, and her heart would palpitate as if It would jump out of her body. Night sweats weakened her fast, and she had a constant tired feeling, bnt more tired in the morning than on going to bed. While in this condition she consulted the above special ists, whose reputation for making permanent cures has Ions since becom e thoroughly estab lished. She says of the matter: "Although 1 had doctored with several phy sicians and with patent medicines, I got no re lief, but gradually grew worse. In fact my neighbors and even 1 myself thought I could only live a few months. Reading in tbe papers bow Mrs. Bratt had been cured of terriula cramps and pains by the catarrh specialists at 323 Penn avenne I took a course or treatment and now I gladly testify to my complete cure of all my aches and pains as above described. 1 cheerfully recommend these specialists to all sufferiut; from catarrh, or stomach trouble.
