At Wood's Hun yards there-were 162 head of cattle on tbe market, 142 of which were from f Chicago, Chicago cattle sold at $4 25 to St 85 IT per cut, and Ohio from $4 50 to 15. Only one .jii load, averaging 1.450 fis. and close to prime, ' brought the outside quotations. There v, ere 432 head of sheep and lambs on tbe market. The range for sheep was 4Jc to 6c per ft, and lambs 6c to 6.65c. There was some demand tor hogs, but none were offered. Kelt week and from that time on there will be a full supply ot hogs on the market. Wood's Island markets showed few siens of activity. The general situation was in favor of buyers. There are 150 loads of cattle on tbe market at East Liberty yards this morning, against 109 loads last Monday, 80 loads the 'previous week. As our local trade calls fornotmore thanEO car loads, It i evident that with nearly double this number offered, markets would drag, and prices drop. In to-day's offerings there were coprimes. The supply was mostly common to fair butcher cattle. Light, tidy butcher beeves, such as our market calls for. were very scarce, hupnly was not up to demand. But the heavy run of other grades served to depress markets all aloDgtbe line, and all grades of cattle were 10 to 20c lower than last Monday's prices. Too range for light butcher beeves was Sii to 4c per lb. The best heavy cattle on the market sold at $4 25 to $4 40 per cwt. Tbe Bayers In Luck. The buyers bad the advantage and prospects were good for heavy shipments .east In first bands. There were abont 300 head of calves on the market. Good light stock ranged from 54S 6Jc per lb and heavy from 23fc, The run' of sheep aDd lambs was light, there being about 12 loads on the market. Average quality was below par. Markets opened slow, but last week's prices were maintained. There were 35 loads of hogs on the market and demand was flood for all good stock, at a sharp- advance on ast week's prices. One dealer quoted top prices at S4 45 and another H 55. Grassers ranged from Hi 15. Pnces.are off 10c at Chi cago this morning according to advices re ceived by one of our packing firms. Satur day's top price at Chicaco was S4 25. This morning It was $415. Tbe improvement in demand for hogs is traced oy dealers to tbe , drop of the mercury, and if the cool weatber 1 continues there will be an upward movement ; of provisions. FluctBBtloni In the New York Mnrket Cloud Upon the Street Bean Shy Confi dent Feeling; Knocked Oat by a Set-Back. New York August 25. There was a decid edly easier feeling in the money market to-day, and rates on call vi ere again down to a reason able basis, although they would be called very high at any other time. The squeeze being temporarily checked, the street bad time to look at other factors In the situation, and more attention was paid to the threatened strikes than for the past few days. The general opin ion on the street is, however, that thero will be no strike of importance, and should it really come that It has been fully disoounted. The bluster is likely to be kept up, however, and until the question is settled one way or an other, it remains as a cloud npon the market, restricting operations for the long side of the account, while the recent heavy decline and the enlargement of the short Interests, together with the fact that stocks have gone In stronger hands, make the bears shy of extending their lines more at present. The market consequently again relapsed into something like the recent dullness and stagna tion in prices, and, although there were some movements in the list, the final changes show only small fluctuations for the day. The bank statement ot Saturday Is believed to reflect conditions of a lew days previons, and the actual condition of the banks Is thought to have been but slightly different from that of a week ago, and it is expected that before the next statement becomes due that the deficit in tbe reserve will have been completely wiped out. The bulk ot the business was done to-day at about 10 or 12 per cent, with increasing ease as tbe day wore along. After opening at ad vances oiXa per cent, as a rule there was a setback wbich reflected tbe apprehensions of timid holders in regard to the threatened strike, but the depression outside of sugar re fineries, which still feels the effect of thede. cislon allowing the receiver of the North River Refinery to come in as one of the defendants In the suit for the reorganization of the trust, was of small proportions, and tbe easier feeling in money and the growing distrust of the strike soon developed a stronger tone, although dull ness then became tbe ruling feature of the market and remained so till tbe close. While the high rates for money have disap peared, tbe feeling of uneasiness is likely to continue until sufficient money has come out to put the reserve of the banks at a comfortable figure above tbe legal requirements. To-day, however, toward the close, there was a decline to below the legal rate and stocks responded Immediately, although It is beyond doubt that no material ventures were entered into on ac count ot it. There was tbe same scarcity of stocks to-day that was such a feature last week, and any attempt to buy at once advanced prices, and tbe covering operations were, therefore, small, while tbe short Interest remains at about tbe same figure still. C, C C. and St. Louis became conspicuous in the last hour for Btrengtb, and others which displayed more than tbe usual stiffness were Canada Southern, which closed IK higher; Louisville and Nash ville and Wheeling and Lake Brio preferred each 1 per cent. The close was dull, but firm to stroug generally at small fractious better than first prices. Railroad bonds showed the usual dullness, the sales of all issues extending to only $413, 000, while the market remained abso lutely without feature or movement along the active Issues. There were a few marked changes as usual among tbe inactive bonds, but none ot special Importance Government bonds have been dull and steady to firm. State bonds have been entirely neg lected. Petroleum opened strong and moved Irregularly throughout, spot oil declining . while September option fell , and then railroad closing firm. The Post says: "It was decidedly a waiting market for stocks to-day. Neither speculators nor Investors were disnosed to do much until there Is a little more certainty abont the money market and the threatened labor strikes. Up to 1 o'clock the reports circulated in the street K in regard to the prospect ot tbe strike were all iavoraoie to tne prODablllty tna tue attempt If made, would be a decided failure. Mons; continued rather scarce at 12 to 15 per cent to 1 o'clock, but as It was known before no that another $1,100,000 of i4 per cent bonds had been offered this morning to the Treasury fbr redemption, it helped to strengthen the belief that the whole $20,009,000 would soon comein, and that this, together with other expedlnts which the Treasury might resort to, wuld prevent any continued or severe stringenc; The following table shows the prices or sfctlra stocks on the New York Stock Exchange yester day.
