THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH? THURSDAY, ATJGrTTST 14, 189a 3. SLOW GLASS TEADE. A Good Demand for Chimneys, bnt Tableware is Away Below Par. ODD EEASONS FOR THE DULLSESS. A.. Chicago Man Recommends Cnllom and Cameron to KepuMlcans. GREAT BUSH OF PEOPLK G01KQ EAST The festtre glass scent is no longer a solid reality abont .the Monongahela House. Of the thirty or more -who gaily registered t the hotel a month ago, only a fen- are left. Their glory has departed, and they hare gone with It as a flaming flambeau to light up the pathways of benighted natives in. other places. Truly the delightful drummer is missed from the lobbies and corridors, and the little gather ings in the eTening when trade ana the latest jokes were intelligently discussed hare gone for another six months at least. The long array of beautiful lamp chimneys, curious novelties and the common tableware bare been removed from the rooms, and they now adorn the habitations in other hotels. Some of them are resting peace fully in the bottom of great trunks, where they may stay for awhile until the sample fiend decides to descend on a new town. "What kind of a business did the agents have on this trir?" a reporter asked one of them yesterday. "Rather below the aver age," he replied. "The trade in lamp chim neys was magnificent, rushing, in fact was never better. Novelties sold fairly well, but table ware was not in it. Of course, we are all satisfied with the results, have to be, indeed, for some of us expected a big trade for several reasons. "I don't anticipate a heavy business this fall either. Why? Well, I have noticed this, that when you take the money out of the people's pockets business is bound to be dull. Last winter was a mild one. As a result little coal was consumed, heavy clothing and underwear were not in demand and the money invested in such articles, for example, was taken out of the circulation, and hasn't come back yet. On the heels of this came the failnre of the fruit crop, which will take abont $12,000,000 more ont of the gen eral circulation this fall. The consequences are that the glass trade is affected with all others. I travel a great deal and meet all sorts of drnmmers. The hat agent, the boot and clothing man, all of them, make the same complaint. "Another thing, as long as you tie up money at Washington, and find it necessary every year to build additional buildings to hold it, you will injnre trade jnst that much. The boodle of the country should be put into the pockets of the people; at least it should not unnecessarily be diverted from the regular channels, and whenever this is done business will be booming." TEE BUSH TO THE EAST. Mr. Emlth Says H Never Saw Socli Crowds Traveling; Before. E. D. Smith, division passenger agent of the Baltimore and Ohio road, returned yes terday from the East where he had gone with a number of G. A. E. men. Mr. Smith stated that they experienced no trou ble in transportation on account of the New York Central difficulties. Post 128 left .New York for Boston on the boat by way oi Providence, while Post 41 started on the New York, New Haven and Hartford. This road rnns out of the Central depot for a few miles over their line. There was consider erable excitement in the yards, hut the strikers made no offers to delay any of the trains. Speaking of the rush of people Mr. Smith said: "In all my experiencel never saw so many people traveling at one time as I did last Sunday. There was an awful jam. You can get uo idea of the number of peo ple, not Grand Army men, who took ad vantage of the low rates to see the East un less you saw the crowds. On Sunday the Baltimore and Ohio road at Washington sold 1,300 tickets for Boston and 2,100 for Atlantic City. At Coney Island on the same day there were 100,000 people." Another of the regular excursions over the Baltimore and Ohio to Atlantic City will leave this morning. In the morning and evening trains there will be ten Pull man sleepers and tea coaches. TICKLED THE COPPER. A Pretty Miss Thanked Him for Helping Her Across SmllbQeld. . The Pittsburg coppers are noted for their gallantry, and those along Smithfield street now have a chance to exercise it This thoroughfare is badly torn up near the Monongahela House at present to receive the Birmingham electric road. Men are able to jump the big ditches, but the ladies, alas, can't do it, and if they wish to cross over must seek the nearest crossing. A determined miss was in such a predica ment yesterday, but she essayed valiantly to cross the Buoicon. but failed. Jnst then one of Chief Brown's finest came to her rescue, and taking her arm, helped her over the obstruction. "Ah, thank you," she said she turned and walked awav. sweetly as "That is a mighty purty Miss," remarked the.tickled copper as he rubbed his hands. 'I must take care of them while this street is torn up," and he was immensely pleased at the prospects of his new role for the next few weeks. DICE WAS SILENT. Mr. Quaj's Dumping of the Force BUI Be Cnrded ns a bhrewd Move. Sick Quay went East last evening. He was accompanied to the depot by United States District Attorney Lyon. He had nothing to say about the action of his father in dumping the force bill to push through the tariff measure. This latest move of the Senator is re garded as a shrewd one by local politicians. Shonld the tariff bill be passed it will make the Bepublican party, solid with the manu facturers, and Delamater's calling and elec tion will be assured. STHi IK US INFANCY, Bat the Telephone Has Not Been Improved Much of Ijate. S. W. Leedom, of Boston, who is con nected with the Bell Telephone Company, is at the Duquesne. Mr. Jjeedom said that no marked improvements had been made in the instrument of late, but it was still in its infancy. They are having some good results in long distance talking in the East. The wires between New York and Philadelphia, and the same city and Boston, are working re markably well. HE FAY0ES THE TWO OB. - Mr. Utile Hopes the Next Ticket Will Be Colloid and Cameron. D. F. little, of Illinois, an ex-Commissioner of the TJnion Pacific Bailroad and an ex-member of the Bepublican National Com mittee, passed through the city last evening bound to his home from the East Mr. Little states that Senator Cullom wili&e a strong man in the next national convention. The Illinois delegation will be solid for him and there is a strong feeling in the West in his favor. Mr. Little thinks that the Sena tor will make a capable President, and he is anxious to see him nominated. He says that Mr. Cullom would con ciliate the farmers and other heavy shipper wio have been oppressed by the railroads, at his pubKe life has been spent in securing favorableirgislation for them. Concerning the present policy of the Re pnblican party ha said that there were graTe questions before both Houses lor their consideration, and the members are re ceiving so many conflicting letters from their constituents that they scarcelv know what to do. A general sentiment has not yet been crystalized on any of the leading political questions. Mr. Little thought that Senator Cameron, of this State, would make a good running mate with Cullom. MACHINISTS FIRM. WILL NOT RETURN TO WORK UNLESS THEIR DEMANDS ARE AGREED TO. Several Firm. Concede the Nlne-Honr Dot Flint Glass Mannfncinrer and Workers Conferring; on the Scale Hold ers Not Thinking- of Shorter Bonn The strike of the machinists and the men in the two branches of the Westinghouse system presented no new "feature yesterday. The employes of the Keystone and Walker Bridge Companies will return to-day on agreement by the firms to the shorter day. Hugh M. Bole's men will also return to day, that employer having again offered them the concession. Otherwise than in these cases the position oi the combatants is unaltered. Contrary to expectations the other branches of the Westinghouse plants did not turn out, or give sign of sympathy with the strikers. The firm willmaintain, it was learned yesterday, its attitude already an nounced, and on to-morrow will pay off all its employes who will not make up their minds to return to work on Monday. At Twenty-fifth street yesterday was witnessed the curious anomaly of one section of the company's plant deserted, and .still, while across the road, the machinists employed in the gas and fuel manufacturing depart ment were at work at full swing. These men had not turned out as reported yester day. Ninety-one machinists and about fifty apprentices and laborers are out iu the machine company's department "A good many of them,". said Superin tendent Bole vesterday, "only went out through tear of being called 'black sheep by the others. Among them are men who have been with us for years, and whom I know were averse to going out. As a mat ter of fact, our men are better paid than those in outside shops, and it his been noto rious that the Westinghouse shops have been regarded as the best in the city to work in. The company will not recede from its position, indicated to the men on Saturday. It is willing to adopt the nine-hour day from the 1st of September at a correspond ing rate of pay. Any places idle on Mon day we shall begin to fill from outside sources, of which we have many." AH "JUF0TJHDED EEP0ET. The Story That the Olotders Are Abont to Agitate for Short Hoars a Fable. A statement which appeared in a morn ing paper yebterday regarding the molders is very apt to mislead. L. A. 1030, mold ers, Knights of Labor, held a special meet ing for the purpose of giving that organiza tion of the molders as much of a "boom" as possible. The question of hours ras not discussed at all, and it is stated on the au thority of the Master Workman of the As sembly, I. N, Boss, that no proposition look ing to a reduction of hours has been intro duced, nor will be for a very considerable time to come. Ml. Boss deprecated such unfounded reports as calculated to create uneasiness in trade circles. Begarding the Brotherhood of Machinery Molders, and the Iron Molders' Union of North America, Vice President Wisdom said a few days ago, that there would be no movement for shorter hours until the Fed eration had given the word. There is rea son to believe tbat no such move will be made this year. ' CONFEEEHf Q ON SCALE. Flint Glass BInnnfnetnrers and 'Workers Still nt It. The pressed ware and iron mole scales conference was continued yesterday in the 'offices of the Flint Glass Association, in the Stevenson building. The session was a long one, lasting until 7:30 o'clock, and then the business was not concluded. An adjournment was taken to meet again at the same place on next Tuesday week. As a result ot the day's work a number of items hitherto treated as extras were added to both lists. Beyond this, and that the prices were equalized, nothing more apper taining to the business of the session could be obtained. Appetite is generally restored to deli cate children by the use of Dr. D. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge; and not onlv an anpetite, but strength and vigor as well. Sold by all druggists. GOOD NEWS TO LOVERS OF MUSIC. The List Opened For Another Piano Club. Mr. Alex. Boss, the manager of the Everett Piano Club, has just returned from a tour among the piano factories of the East After a thorough examination of all the leading pianos he has again selected the "Everett as the best, and has contracted with that company for another 350 pianos.
