FEW HEN LIKE TO APPEAR DIRTY, But Many Hare Xo Choice in the Matter After Thej Leave Home in the Morning for Work. GOOD HEALTH SUE TO CLEANLINESS. General Desire imonr Those Interested for a Epeedy Eefirm In ritlsbmr. "It's a decidedly good move;" "it ought to be adopted;" "it's something people have been clamoring for;" it is for the interest of employers as well as employes." These were some of the generally ex pressed sentiments or workmen yesterday touching the article in yesterday's Dis patch on better facilities for cleanliness among the employes in the shops of the city. At tbe headquarters of the Knights ot Labor and American Federation ot Labor this unanimity of opinion was remarkable, and expressions were heard on all sides com mendatory of The Dispatch for bringing the suggestion to the front It was a for ward step in the right direction toward the elevation of the laboring classes of people. Said Master "Workman Evans, of the Knights of Labor: "It is a good move ment that onght to be adopted as soon as possible. I know how the working men feel. They do not like to appear dirty on the streets, and if the city shops, especially the fonndries and mills, were proviaed with lockers where the men miebt hang up their working clothes at ntgbt and don better ones, tbe workincmen the majority of them wonld not wear their dirty shop gar ments on the street and in pnblic convey ances. Go into the Government Printing Office at 'Washington. There places are pro vided where the workmen may hang np their street clothes when they go to work in the morning and pnt them on again when they quit work at night ANOTHER ADVANTAGE TS XT. "Besides, workmen frequently have to go to meetings of their lodges or meet other en gagements in the evening. They live at such a distance from their shops that they have not time to go home, clean themselves, change their clothes and meet their engage ments in time. So they either go there directly from the shops in their dirty clotbes or they do not go at all. Then again, if snch accommodations were to be had in the shops, it would save a good deal of labor for the wives and mothers. A workman wonld not cause distress to his wife by coming into the house at night and flinging his dirty clothes around here and there." "We ought to have it," said another workman. "I have ridden in street cars in my dirty clothes, and often I have seen women trying to get away from me. But I am too tired to walk home after working all day. Iflhadsoufe place in the shop to put my street clothes where they would not get dirty, I could make a change every night" "In the Pennsylvania shops," said a worker in those establishments, "soap and facilities for washing and changing clothes are provided, and in the shops at Altoona each man has a separate locker for his clothes and his tools." Mr. A. D. Bare, Treasurer of Electrical Union 3696, of the American Federation of Labor, said that instauces have frequently come under his observation where working men, so tired that they could hardly stand up, would not get into a streetcar with their dirty clothes because they might be snubbed and soil the clothing of other passengers. Men like that, he said, would not wear their dirty clothes on the street if they were enabled to change them at their shops. OKE OF MANX INSTANCES. "I remember one instance," he continued, that happened about a year ago, as my wife and myself were returning from Alle gheny in a street car. A number of work ingmen, among them a young boy about 12 or 13 years, all workers evidently in a brickyard, boarded the car. They were covered from head to foot with brickdust The boy sat down alongside my wife, and pushed up against her. "When he left the car my wife had one side of her silk dress coated' with brick dust, and she had a ter rible time to get it clean again. This goes to show that men would clean themselves and change their dirty clothes if tbey could do so conveniently in the shops, and that they would rather walk or stand in the cars than to sit down in their dirty clothing." "For my part, it is a decidedly good move, and one that people have been' clam oring for for a long time," said Mr. Thomas, Corresponding Secretary of the American Federation, "it would be a very small matter on the part of the employers to give their men the required facilities for preserv ing cleanliness and appearing on the street in decent attire. It is something the em ployers really ought to do. Ladies in street cars are compelled to bump up against workmen right from the shops in their filthy clothes. Of course, some workmen will be found who don't want to put off their work ing clothes, but that is not the desire of the majority, and it is no argument against tbe introduction of lockers or closets. It is very easv to educate men into changing their clothes. Another good feature of such a reform is that it would teach young boys who are growing up as apprentices to be seat and tidy about their personal appear ance, and also about their work. In that way it would benefit the employers just as well as their workmen. COULD AND SHOULD BE SOKE. Mr. Kelly, an employe in the Westing house Machine "Works, said tbe reform could be made very easily, and should be made. "The biggest portion of workingmen," he said, "live on the outskirts of the city, at a loDg distance from their places of employ ment, and tney have to get there in cars. A great many of them would not sit down in the cars, and being too tired to stand up, they preler to walk. I have seen workmen lrom the East, and they have told me that there lockers are found for the men to hang their clothes, baskets and dinner pails in, and even bathtubs, where they may have baths before leaving the shops." James Connelly, a heater pmnWrd at the Clinton Blast Furnace, on the Southside, when asked about the toilet facilities in his mill, said: "I think such things are a necessity, by all means. I don't know of any mill in the city where such conveniences are to be had. Howevej, if all the workers would make a unanimou"! request for decent -washing rooms, and keep asking continuallr, . - the companies might grant the request At ', -fthe mill-where I work there is a small un occupied building, owned by the company, and located near by, which could be very easily converted into a bath room, at little expense. Some of the men work 24 houts without rest, Saturday and Sunday, and if "J ,-""'- ... uciweeu turns it would greatly refresh them. I'll try to interest the men at the furnace in the matter.and see if we can't obtain what should be given us freely " Mr. David, who works at Chess, Cook & Co.'s mill on tbe Southside, said to the re sorter: 'Tor bettering tbe mni;.. .. .u- rorkers there coulda't'be better pUa ad - J vocated. The health of thvmen would be better, because they "would not need to go home in clothes sweating from hard toil. Some of us walk or ride long distances, and when we get home the clothing hss become drv, leaving the pores of the skin clogged. This causes considerable ill health, but it could be obviated if we had an op portunity to bathe before leaving the mill. Then, when we ride in street cars we get angry looks, and sometimes hard words, if people happen to brush our soiled clothes." 'TWOULD be a godsend. Robert Beside, employed at the Carbon Iron and Steel Company's works, in Law renceville, said: "The only place we have to wash is a long trough. We have to take towels with us, too. A good bathroom with plenty of towels for the use of all the men would be a godsend, and I believe we can get them if the request is made. The ab sence of washing facilities is often com plained ot by the men. Another cause for complaint is the lack of drinking water worthy the name. 1 would like to see both these conveniences given us. Thomas Williams, who 'also works at the Carbon mills, replied to the reporter's qnery as follows: "The millworkers want good bathing rooms, and if tbey had them our health wood be much improved. Lots of us don't ride home on the street cars because we can't wash before we start, and I know from experience that everybody gets offended when they rub our working clotbes. If The Dispatch successfully advocates this plan, it will receive the thanks of hundreds of workingmen." The desire for better cleansing conveni ences in the shops is not only confined to the workingmen themselves. It is widespread, and pervades all classes ot people. The street car managements heartily indorse the movement One of the conductors on tbe Penn avenue line said yesterday; "In traveling on the cars workingmen generally ride on the platforms, but some go inside and drop down next to a lady who invaria bly wears a dress which she dreads the me chanic, with his greasy working clotbes, will ruin. She frequently gives up her place to him on this account This condition of affairs is to be deplored, when it lies within tbe hands of the workingmen's em ployers to remedy the evil. If the wives of our manufacturers had to take the street cars to do their shopping, it would not require a second trip with a crowd of working men to bring about this improvement We see innumerable cases where ladies have costly garments rendered unsightly from simply occupying seats in cable and horse cars, where a mill man, with a dirty suit of clothes, sat previously. Of course we can say nothing. In Eastern cities, I understand, unclean workingmen are as scarce as tbe dirty ones are plentiful here. This is on acconntof the toilet rooms which are provided to enable the -workingmen to appear on the street as cleanly dressed as other people." PROSPECTS GOOD FOR riANO CLUB. ANOTHER Mr. Alex.
