ymjmliiB W,'TyT"-' - ' Y ' feft TKB PTTTSBURG- DISPATCH, SATURDAY, JULY 5, 1890. NOBOSSISMFORHIM Ei-Congressman George W. Crouse, of Akron, Ohio, Though an Un compromising Republican, TAKES KO STOCK IN DELAMATER. Be Thinks Porter's Catechism Good Enough as Tar as It Goes, Bat Doesn't Go Far Enough. THE FEDEEAL ELECTION BILL KO GOOD. Mr. Crease Savs it Would Brine Disaster en toe Ee pnbiican farty. Ex-Congressman George Y. Crouse, of Akron, O., one ot the most extensive manu facturers of reapers and mowers in the United States, was at the Anderson yester day. Mr. Crouse is also President of the Charleroi Plate Glass Company, and fre quently comes to Pittsburg on business. When found at the hotel he was scanning Mr. Porter's list of questions to manufac turers published in yesterday's Dispatch. "What do I think of them?" he replied, smiling, to the first query. "Well, they don't go far enough. That is the main ob jection I have, and when I explain you will understand. To begin with, Mr. Porter as sures manufacturers that they need have no tear of their answers being used against them, and that in itself is a giveaway. A business mm should cot be afraid to fur nish iciormation. There should be nothing that would come back and club a man. Kow, it I should an swer Mr. Porter's questions just as they are and go no further, my business would show up as one ot the most profitable in the country, when in reality we are scarcely making anything and prices are all cut to pieces. SHOULD BE EXrEKTS. "Mr. Harrison or the Supervisor are no doubt honest and good men, butsuch ques tions should be framed by experienced men for every industry. I have no objections to going to the bottom and showing up every thing. If this were done it would com pletely disarm the demagogue and satisfy the working people. "I know the tendency to-day is to feel that the rich are getting "wealthier and the poor more poverty-stricken. Some feel that the tariff is intended only to benefit the manufacturer, and that enormous profits are made in business. My impression is that Mr. Porter has such ideas in his mind from the manner in which he asks for information. Iu my business there is a great difference between the shop cost and the real cost. Any intel ligent mechanic knows just what the ma terial and labor are figured at, but more of them know what it requires to put the goods on the market. I pay 5600,000 every year to sell my machines more, by far, than it costs me to make the crop, but I don't see that any of Mr. Porter's questions develop that lact. Rone of them touch on the cost oi keeping agents on the road, storage and transier bills, freight, , office hire, loading and unloading materials and machines at the shop, and a thousand and one other little extras that are over looked by the people, but which the manu facturer is forced to pay. SOME OP THE EXTRAS. "Frequently I ship a machine at a mo ment's notice, and maybe have to send a man along to put it together, and stay a day or so to teach the farmer how to work it. All tfiis requires money. Yes, I repeat agair-that it costs more to pot the machines oinrfWBmarket than it does to make them, and this is the result ot a ruinous competi tion. I hope people will come to their senses some day and see the folly of such work. "If Mr. Porter's questions would brine out all these facts, then I would have no objection to answering them. What I have said of my business, however, I don't think is true of all other industries. I have sim ply given the worst side of it, but one that must not be overlooked. "We always have some red-hot speeches after a census is taken, and the demagogue, iu delivering his harangue, points to the figures in the tables, and defies you to go back of them, but, alas, the Jgnres don't begin to tell all the truth, and the people ought to know it" Turning to the subject of politics, Mr. Crouse said: "We are busy these days electing Democratic Congressmen in Ohio. The people haven't any use for bosses in that State. If from what I can understand of the political situation in Pennsylvania, though I am a Republican, I would vote for Mr. Pattison. A man shouldn't imagine because he has been favored a little that he owns the whole State. A LITTLE TOO CONFIDENT. "Some months ago I met Senator Dela xnater. He is a clever man, but I never saw anyone so confident of his nomination. He talked as if he had everything his own way, and I guess he knew he had. The Dis patch, I notice, has entered a protest, and started a small fire that will sweep these two rivers before election time comes. I for one. ifbossism is rampant in the State, would like to see iu" Concerning the silver legislation and the Federal election bill, Mr. Crouse stated that on the silver question he was inclined to agree with the President and Secretary of the Treasury. He had no objection to issuing a paper dol lar for a dollar'sworth of silver. There would be no harm in that, but when it came to putting silver on the same basis with gold, there are other countries that have something to sav about that. It is when they would refuse to accept our silver dollars in exchange for gold that the trouble would begin. When gold is at a premium there is something wrong. Mr. Crouse admitted the country and its business were growing rapidly, "but it was useless to expand the money system beyond natural laws. The extreme silver men, he argued, would be in the same position as the farmer who should demand that the Government buy all his wheat as fast as he raised it. Other producers would have the same privilege, and what would become of the country. WOULDN'T HAVE IT. "As for the Federal election bill, I am a Republican," he continued, "but the pas sage ot the bill wouldn't help the party. . It will only bring defeat. To bring the"ques tion home, we people in this State or Ohio would not submit to baring our elections superintended by Federal officers, and neither will the citizens of North Carolina stand it. The bill will not pass the Senate, but if it bliould become, a law it would create trouble. I sympathize with the Be pnblican party, but such a measure will not secure lair elections."
