THE PITTSBTJBG- DISPATCH, THURSDAY, JTJLY 3, 189a 3 TWO BUSY PATRIOTS Mayor Gonrley and Chief Bigelow Working Hard to Complete the Arrangements for the FOURTH OP JDLT CELEBRATION. Original Paclace Peddlers in Bchenley Park Will Surely be Sent to the Workhouse. CATHOLIC SOCIETIES TO TUKX OUT. Eesidents ef Oakland Squire Arrange a Fine Eren Itf Programme. Two of the busiest men in the city at present are Mayor Gourley and Chief Bice low, of the Department of Public Worts. They put in most of their time ont at Bchenley Park, overseeing the 'work of get tin;; the place in shape for the "greatest show on earth." The Fourth of July cele bration will be, without doubt, the biggest thing of its kind ever seen in this city. The two executives are so busy making arrange ments that they can be found out in the park long before the workmen get there in the mornings. Nearly every detail has been attended to, and nothing remains bnt to pray for a nice day. Superintendent Morris Mead went to the Park yesterday, and put in a police tele phone to be used in case extra officers are needed at any time during the day. The telephone will be connected with the Four teenth ward station house which is about a mile and a half away. In addition to this 25 police otjeers, some of them mounted, will keep an eye out for crooks and any sus picious persons seen on the grounds will be run in without ceremony. NO ORIGINAL PACKAGES. Chief Brown yesterday received word that two wagon loads of beer were seen going to ward the park and Inspector Whitehead was ordered to investigate ana see that no "original package" houses or pocket speak-easies were opened up, in or near the park. Chief Brown said yesterday: "If I find any persons ped dling bottles of whisky on the grounds they will go to the workhonse so quick that they won't know it until they get there. The celebration willbe a family gathering and there will be no necessity of 'original pack ages' being in the park." Mayor Gourley is anxious that the people will go out to the park as early in the day aa possible. The street cars and the rail road trains will be crowded at the hour when the celebration be gins and for several hours afterward. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad will run its first special to the park at 8:30 in the morning, and each hour afterward. About noon the trains will run a little closer to gether if it is found necessary. The trains will land passengers within 100 yards of the speakers' stand, and the rate will be 15 cents lor the round trip. The Second Ave nue Electric Railway will land passengers wunin easy waiting distance, and wilt be nearer than the Fifth avenue line. Sign boards will direct the people how to go to the park. Forward avenue is only a short distance from the Second avenue line, and Chief Bigelow will go out to-day to see about the road up from Laugblin station. The latter is right at Four-mile run, where people traveling by way of Second avenue should disembark. ELOQUENT ORATORS. The list of speakers has been revised, and yesterday the Mayor sent out invitations to the following gentlemen who are expected :wjfeliver five-minute speeches: Major K. Araiontooth. T. M. Marshall, Esq., C. S. Fetterman, Esq., John S. Lambie, Esq., "W. D. Porter. Major A. M. Brown, S. U. Trent, "W. D. Moore, George Elphicstone, Dr. "VY". D. Kearns, Colonel Echols, George Monro, Clarence Burleigh, J. J. Miller, Miles Humphries, Assistant Postmaster Al Edwards, w. E. Ford and Broadax Smith. The celebration fund was increased by 525 yesterday. Magistrate Succop turning in f 15 collected by him. It has been decided sow to have the Great "Western Band in addition to the select Knights and Cathe dral Bands, which have already been en gaged. Professor Fisher, who has in charge the juvenile contests, yesterday secured a lot of prizes to be awarded to the winners in his department, including pocket knives, guns, and toys of various kinds. Carl Better, the eminent musical director, is arranging a programme that will be a surprise to the people. George Sheel, of the City Assessor's office, a wrestler of local note, has consented to have a bout with Jim McEnight's pet bear. The latter is now being trained for the event. The speeches will begin at 1030 and the sports about 130 in the afternoon. A MIGHTY CHORUS. Sheriff McCandless had beard from such a number of persons and organizations yes terday that he felt justified in announcing that his cborns would contain 2,000 trained voices, when the patriotic songs are snng to-morrow morning. Prof. Carl Better, who has handled larger choruses with better results than any other Pittsburg musician, has consented to act as leader and the 2,000 throats will be controlled by his baton. Mayor Gourley's headquarters will be established at one of the houses in the park, convenient of access from all points of in terest. The press headquarters will be in the same building, aud will be nrovided with all the accommodations required. Yesterday the Mayor decided to strikeout the ladies' races. In their place were sub stituted a newspaper men's race, 75 yards; first prize a picture and easel, and second prise a Paroson thermometer;and a lawyers' race, 150 yards; first prize, a pair of pearl mouuted opera glasses, and second prize, a box of crackers. Campbell & Dick added a new contest yesterday by offering a cigar set as first and a box of cigars as second prize in a Scotch bagpipe contest. Already Sutherland and TJrquhart have entered, and others are ex pected. FOE LITTLE ATHLETES. There js every indication that the display of fire worka will far exceed anything in that way lar several years past. "While the borough authorities have not taken any action look ilngtoward a formal celebration, the citizens are all getting ready for an independent dis playot their own. "Hello, my boy, what's that you've got?" was the question a poor, tired night worker propounded yesterday to the young Ameri can next door, who makes the mornings re sound with anything and everything calcu lated to drive away the sweet slumber so necessary for mental recuperation. "Firecrackers for Fourth of July," was the reply made by the youthful patriot, who held up several bunches with a beaming countenance. 'Well, you just dare shoot any of them off before 10 o'clock: on that eventful day and your life won't be worth much. Re member I sleep in the morning," continued the brain worker, with a mental reservation ot "when you let me." "I just bet I will shoot 'em off as soon as I get up, and so will Dick and Joe and Frank and all the boys round here." And so they will, judging from the sales reported by those dealing in the goods, which have been unprecedented. Fully double the amount ever sold before in one season have passed already into the hands of the small boy or his aunt or his uncle or his cousin, to be brought forth on the glorious Fourth. Mayor Gourley's proclamation for an old fashioned celebration has been the basis ot a good many sales. The custom of rejoicing in liberty by sending np the fizzing rocket, throwing the villainous little torpedo or shooting the frolicsome fire cracker had fallen into "innocuous desuetude," but re vived with a great boom in the face of the proclamation. Among the new introdnctions are rockets great and rockets small, the meteor, phan tom, prismatic dragon, cascade and calliope, and some musical productions, such as the musical candles, whistling jacks, calliope mine, besides the dragon nest, Mount Vesu vious candles and surprise box. all of which are marvels in their way. The small fire crackers, though not intended to go skyward with their more brilliant relatives, took quite a step that way this year In the matter of price. They increased from 51 to $1 50 a package owing to the going bottomward of the vessel in April that was so heavily loaded with them, and a second vessel that was expected to lower the price with its cargo did not arrive in New York until Monday evening, and is entirely too late to affect the stiff price for this Tear the crackers could not be obtained' by dealers oumuc ui ions in time lor sale. a BEAurmn hight display. rirevrorke and Music nt Night From Oak land qnnre Though there are no fireworks at night provided for in the public demonstration for the Fourth at Schenley Park, any of the thousands of visitors who decide to remain will see from the park a magnificent display which is prepared by the residents ol Oak land square, as well as hear a splendid brass band concert from the same place. Beautifully printed invitations were yes terday sent out by the residents of Oakland square to their friends to share the festival of the evening from 8 to 11 o'clock. Oak land square is on the site of old Linden Grove, at the foot of Atwood and Oakland avenues, and directly overlooks the most beautiful part of Schenley Park, Panther Hollow, which lies but a couple of hundred feet distant The square, with its handsome dwellings, asphaltum walks, pretty park and superb outlook over the Four Mile Bun Valley, is in itself oneof the attractions of the city. Its residents take great pride in it, and those who have been favored with in vitations for to-morrow evening may count upon a delightfnl occasion. The printed programme for the celebration on the square covers a wide and attractive range of fireworks and music It will be a picturesque and stirring finale for the big daylight celebration in the park.
