M Wonderful Progress in the Mannfac- tnre of Glass in tho United States Daring a Decade, PARTICULARLY IN PENNSYLVANIA in Evident Season for the Sudden Spring ing Dp of Kew Towns in a Mushroom-Like Way. PLATE GLASS GEOWIKG THE FASTEST, the Increase In That Branch Being 800 rer Cent In the Last Tea Tears. Much has recently been written of the wonderful growth of various cities, and of the vast -development of various local indus tries, but the following comparative tabular statement relative to the glass industry, carelully compiled from the best accessible sources ol information, affords much reason for national pride, and definitely marks the measure of material progress and industrial development. The figures for 1880 are taken from Joseph D. "Week's report on the manu facture of glass, tenth census, volume 2. The compilation below was made by Mr. P. M. Gessner, of the .fVdttonaZ Glass Budget, In the forthcoming issue of which journal it will appear: juini viasswarc Furnaces. 1830. 1890. Connecticut 1 1 District of Columbia 1 .... Minnesota 1 Total Furnaces IK 26S Total Pots 1559 The number of pots operating during 1890 are necessarily estimated, are fignred from the number of furnaces, allowing 12 pots to each furnace. The estimate would appear to be much too low. inasmuch as it shows an increase of less than 100 per cent; whereas, the number of furnaces, most of which have been increased from 10 to 15 and 16 pots per furnace during the past ten years, show an increase of oyer 78 .per cent. OTHER THINGS TO COJfSIDEK. The number of furnaces reported for 1890 does not include several in course ot con struction at North Jeannette, one at Butler and one at Punxsntawney. Besides, the in creased number ot continuous and Intermittent tanks in operation, together with the quicker melting power of natural gas and improved furnaces, must all be taken into consideration in any estimate ot the comparative productivity of American furnaces, now and ten years ago. The same number of furnaces, with enlarged and faster melting pots, would produce at least one-fifth more glass than was possible in 1SS0. Hence it is safe to conclude that the bicbest. rather than the lowest, figures given are near est the truth. BATID STRIDES OP THE INDUSTRY. The following table shows at a glance the rapid strides of the indnstry: TTinduto Glass. Furnaces. 130. Missouri follow s with 100 per cent, and old Massachusetts drops back among the small producers. In window glass the showing is not so great, but It is still very remarkab e. It must be re membered, however, that though Iona was re tained in the list of 1S90, no works were then in operation; besides, the large tanks now in course of construction by the Chambers-McKce Company at Jeannette, which will be equal to C6 pots, and the 40-pot tanks of the Hartford City. Ind, Glass works, both of which will no doubt be in operation before the close of the present year, will show an increase of nearly 100 per cent during the past ten years. While Iowa dropped from the list of manu facturing States. Kansas, though not recently operating, built one f umace: Wyoming Terri ntory added one, and little Delaware two fur naces, Indiana and Ohio more than quadrupled their production. H ew Jersey almost doubled her capacity, Massachusetts dropped from four to one furnace, and Pennsylvania adds ten fur naces, and leads the list with 44 furnaces, the largest number of all the States. Ohio shows the largest increase of all, having sprung from 6 to 27 furnaces. The green glass Industry also shows a remark able increase, having added 35 pots since 1SS). .Massachusetts and Mississippi, with one fur nace each, have retired from the business, but Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, Missouri and Utah have entered the list. It will be noted that the column of 18S0 shows two furnaces for Massachusetts and one for Ken tucky, but it must be remembered that only rough plates and skylight glass was being man ufactured in the lormer State, while the one tailing erablishment at Louisville. Kr, turned out only 20.6S4 square feet of rough plate, its only product during the census year, and it en tirely suspended operations shortly afterward. Massachusetts to-day manufactures very fine antique and Cathedral glass, while Ohio, New York, Indiana. Illinois and Pennsylvania have engaged and are successfully manufacturing fine art titles architectural and Cathedral glass, plain, colored, ground and etched, and especially does the Miss ssippi jQiass Company. of St. Louit Mo., manufacture colored Cathe dral ana highly ornamented architectural glass which has won from foreign specialists lust commondation and unstinted praise. Tnis entire line or mannfacrnre is the cro-vth or the past ten years, and though the Industrv isyetinltsinfancy.it Is well established and will undoubtedly be permanently successful. MOST STABTLIITG OF ALL. The, most startling development that the en tire census will snow, has undoubtedly taken place In the plate glass Industry, as will be seen by a glance at the table below: .Plate Glass. Furnaces. If we add these to tne list of works operating, the number of pots m the country show the marvelous and unpre cedented expansion of 800 per cent in this In dustry. Proposed Plan or the Plttaburtr Traction Company to Compete With Il New RJvnl Some Feeders to be Bun by Horae Pcwer. The Pittsburg Traction Company, in the. hope that it will be able to stem the tide in favor of the Duquesne Company, now pro poses to put on a line of 'busses, to connect with the cable cars, on all streets where the Duquesne Company proposes to operate its lines. The officials of the company are now figuring on the cost of putting on the 'busses, and if the money involved is not too much the 'busses will be put on. Word comes from Philadelphia that several coach builders of the Quaker City are making estimates on bids for 16 coaches to be built for the Pittsburg Traction Company. They will bo patterned something after the tally-ho coaches now running on Broad street, Philadelphia, and in New York, and will cost in the neigh borhood of $1,000 each. The 'busses will b3 double deckers, and seats will be arranged on top for "outside" passengers. It is proposed to have the 'busses run on North Highland and Penn avenues east of Shady lane. The idea is to shot out the Duquesne Traction Company, and hold the patronage they now enjoy over these thoroughfares. It is also proposed to have three horses attached to each 'bus, as two would be insufficient. If the company puts on the 'busses. It will have to purchase anout 150 horses and bnild stables and sheds. The total cost of the pro posed scheme would be in the neighborhood of 5100,000. Whether it will be carried out or not is a question. It is thought people will not get on the 'busses to ride to the cable cars when they can step onto an electric car and ride into town without change of cars. NO ONE DOING THE WORK. Three Voting Precincts That Will be Without Lists of Voters. The books of the register assessors of the various districts of the county are beginning to come rapidly into the Connty Commissioners' office. Most or the districts, with the excep tion of Allegheny, hare been turned in. In Allegheny but 4 or the 70 districts have been heard from. There are three districts in the county in which trouble will be experienced at the next election. They are the First district of the Twenty-first ward, the Second district of the .Ninth ward, Allegheny, and the Second dis trict of Wllkins township. The regular assess ors have never taken out their books, and no one has been appointed to do the work in their place. In consequence .on election day the election officers will have'no registry of voters. The work of registering commenced on June 2, and must be finished this month. FOB.
