ifANY CARS BLOCKED. The Strike on the P. V. & C. Railroad Growing Yerj Serious. KO CARS GO "WEST YIA TORT PERRT And the Eallroad Officials Fear the Strike May Spread. HOMESTEAD .5TEEL WOKKS CKIPPLED There are 600 cars blocked at Port Perry as a result of the strike of through freight brakemen. on the Monongahela division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, assisted by the freight handlers at Port Perry. The through freight brakemen struck on Tuesday morn ing and the freight handlers quit work yes terday. .As a result of the strike there hasnotonly not been any freight shipped on the Pitts burg, Virginia and Charleston Kailroad.but all "Western freight from the Pennsylvania Eailroad which is usually shipped oyer the Panhandle via Port Perry is stopped. The regular crews on the Pennsylvania Kail road refuse to take the freight over the Jlo nongahela division, as they are in sympathy with the strikers. Yesterday afternoon the Pennsylvania Kailroad began to send -westbound freight through the city to reach the Panhandle, but this is slow work and freight trains are accumulating at a remark able rate. D. M. "Watte, Superintendent of the Jlonongahela division of the Pennsylvania Kailroad. has spent two days out on the line attempting to adjust the differences, but so far bib endeavors have proven unavailing. THE aiKJT'S DEMANDS. The men insist that they should be paid the same wanes conceded to the yard brake men or 2 16 for day work and $3 23 for night labor. They claim thev were promises tills advance and they will listen to no plans lor a settle ment, which do not include the increase. While there are hut 45 men engaged j0 the strike, yet they alone can handle the cars as no jarriinen or railroaders from other lines can be induced to take their places. The strikers have simply quit work and ref nse to go near the line nor to 6end committees to confer with the company. Meanwhile, the railroad officials are becoming alarmed, as they do not know but that nnder the excitemtnt of the Cleveland strike the men on all the lines leading into Pittsburg may strike if they feel that it is incumbent upon them to do so. Pittsburg is the great distributing center lor Eastern and Western f rcight. and most of the freight consigned to Cleveland comes through .Pittsburg. Tie men evidence a decided unwillingness to handle this freight for fear that they would endanger the Cleveland yard men in gaining their point. Another serious phase to the strike which has presented itself i the fear by the railroad officials that if the Cleveland strike is settled by a concession of the demands of the vardmen for the Chicago scale, the local yardmen will insist lhat they also receive the scale. They were making tl SO a day. and demanded from 2 SO to $2 30 or the Chicago tcale. Their demands were Cnallv compromised by the pay ment of from 12 16 to $2 7& per day. II the Chicago scale be granted the Cleveland yard men it is probable that the local yardmen will insist that they also be placed ou the same level. This complication is puzzling the rail, rnad officials who do not know now to act under the circumstances. CRIPPLING CABXEGIE. It the strike is not settled within a day or two Carnegie's Homestead mill will In all probability have to shut down. The mill is en tirely at the mercy of the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston road, and if the latter cannot move cars into the mill yard the plant will have to stop. It was caught with only a limited sup ply of stock on band, and there is very little coke on the sidincs. The company owns a num ber of shifting engines by which it can move its own cars after the latter have been run into the mill yard, but it is a question whether the shifters could go out on the road after the cars or not. At the time of the last Lake Erie strike the shitters at Oliver's mills were ordered out on the road to get cars, but the men re fused to go. The firm lias a number of Government con tracts on hand, and cannot afford to shut down. The mill is turning out about 1.000 tons of cruiser steel each month for Cramp's ships ard. The company will also likely get the contract for about 5.000 tons of armor plate fur the new cruiser, the largest war vessel ever built in the world. There are also a number of other mills along the south shore of the Monongabcla river that Depend on the railroad for an outlet for their Eturf. II the mills cannot get their cars in and out, they will have to close down until the strike is settled. One department of Carnegie's was closed down Tuesday on account of not being able to get a car of machinery into the yard. The railroad comyany could not deliver it and the department had to close. ,i- LOSS OK PERISHABLE FREIGHT. Should the railway tie-up continue and ex tend to other cities there is a prospect not only that many thousands of people will be put on short rations of green stuff, but that the rail way companies will sutler enormous loss on perishable stuff. Coiouel Kilgore yesterday Inspected and confiscated 90 bushels of pota toes that had been shipped from Neubern, N.C. Southern shippers of garden stuff and berries are suffering greatly from irregular shipments and extortionate prices charged on t-oiue short lines. Where it is shown that delay is caused by negligence the railway companies are some times held responsible, but in the matter of freights, some of the connecting lines Charge pretty much what they please. AWest Tennessee shipper named Barnes tells shipping a carload of berries to Chicago and being charged as iruu,iua"li1le- railroad as the freight amounted to on all the rest, of the road. Col onel Kilgoro tells of a shipment of strawberries Irom Columbia, Tenm. that consumed 11 days In reaching this city. They were worthless when delivered to the consignee. Fortune Seeking Emlcrnnte. "We have occasion to use bnt little of the numerous medicines advertised in onr pa per; but we have found one to fill the bill of what is claimed for it, and take pleasure in saying so. That is Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Kemedy. Some years ago we were very much subject to severe spells oi cholera morbus; and now when we feel any of the symptoms that usually pre cede that ailment, such as sickness at the stomach, diarrhoea, etc., we become scary. we have round Chamberlain s Kemedy the very thing to straighten one out in such cases, and always keep it about. It is some what similar to the usual cholera cures, but seems to contain ingredients that render it more pleasant to take, and that do their work more quickly. Sheriff Devereux tells us that he is subject to cholera morbus, and recently felt a spell coming on, when he ob tained a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Kemedy, and two. doses made him all right We are not writ ing this tor a pay testimonial, but to let our readers know what is a good thing to keep handv in the house. Dr. F. D. Larke. of Rogers City, Mich., says the epidemic of the summer of 1888, in Presque Isle county, in which no many per sons lost their lives, was choleric dysentery instead of cholera as first reported. He used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Kemedy and says it succeeded where all other remedies failed. Not a single caBe was lost in which it was used. This remedy is the most reliable and most successful medicine known for colic, cholera morbus, dysentery, diarrhoea and bloody flux.
