v THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 189a MED OF THEIR JOB. Census Enumerators Plead Sickness -and Ask to be Excused. TWO MUCH WORK FOR TWO CENTS. Ko Fains Belnjr Spared to Secure Com plete Statistics. PHISICIAKB ASKED FOB INFORMATION , Chief Clerk "Walters, of Census Super visor Oliver's office, i having lots of trouble these days. Disgusted enumerators are calling.upon him every few minutes asking for solutions of knotty problems. The worK is. not progressing nearly as fast as was ex pected, and the reason for this was Riven by a census enumerator from the Sixth ward, who also took, the census in 1SS0. He produced the blank used at that time, and a careful comparison proved that the method of taking the census this year necessitates five times as much work as in I860. The census districts were created this year on the basis of the work done in 1880, each district containing from 1,800 to 2.600 names. The returns from enumerators show that 100 names is an average day's work, and at this rate it will be impossible to com plete the censusn 10 or even 15 days. THE WORK OF ONE DAT. The reports yesterday showed 42 to be the smallest number of names secured in a day and 278 names the greatest number. The census officials are determined to ob tain the information they have asked for. Clerical forces are employed transcribing the official records of mortgages and judg ments in every county, and a circular has been issued to every physician in the coun try, asking for statistics on chronic diseases. Ko expense in the matter of printing is being spared by the bureau. Tbe paper used is of the finest, and as occasion arises, circulars are issued in enormous quantities. Mr. Porter thought the census enumerators were giving too much information to the press, and therefore he had 43,000 circulars printed and mailed, one to each enumerator in the country, telling them that there was a fiie of $500 provided for to prevent any information at all being given out. TIBED OP THEIR JOBS. Three enumerators asked to be relieved from duty yesterday, producing physicians' certificates to the effect that they were ill. One of the men was a druggist, and Mr. "Walters suspected collusion in ootaining the certificate. He made a very stiff bluff at the man and he weakened, took up his portfolio and went wearily back to work. The other men were relieved and new ap pointments made. One old gentleman's certificate stated that his feet were so swollen by walking that he could not get his shoes or stockings on. Prank Heilig, census enumerator oi the Second district of the Twentv-sixth ward, has resigned in favor of John Grimm. Heilig is on the grand jury and could not 1 una time to ao the census wore in addition, The Idea in Inventing; the JEoIIan 'Was to make an instrument that a person could play without the years of practice made necessary by the nse of the piano, and to hare it in no way mechanical, but capable of delicate shadings of tempo and expression at will ot the performer. "The iEolian is an embodiment of this idea, and upon it, with one wrek's practice, a person ot no musical education can become a fine performer. The great feature of the in strument is the high class of music it per forms. The catalogue embraces nearly ,000 pieces, including the symphonies, operas and overtures of all the creat masters. The rendition ot these pieces is wonder'ully' accurate, ana tnis seems to mate thefcohan a wonderful educator for both old and young. The many thousands bavins musi cal taste and innate ability, but who are unable to give the years ot practice neces sary, to enable them to perform with the ac curacy demanded by their correct ear and cultivated taste, are, with the iEolian, able to gratify their love of music Call at Mellor & Hoene's, 77 Fifth avenue, general wholesale and retail agents for the Hardman, Krakauer and other celebrated makes of pianos, and see this wonderful instrument. ins Splendid Upright Piano for S200. Because there you get a reliable well known piano that has been before the public long enough to know its durable qualities, and that is an important point. All pianos wben new sound and look well, but will they last? That the pianos and organs tbat Mr. Hamilton deals in will last is an assured fact, they have and are being tried all over this country, and Mr. Hamilton has an un broken record with them for the last twenty years, and then don't forget the fact that you can buy these splendid instruments at reasonable prices and on accommodating terms of weekly, monthly or quarterly pay ments.
