A terrific ex plosion ot gunpowder at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon, caused the loss of a baby's life and the serious injury of its mother and little sister, beside destroyinc two dwelling houses and raining the monuments in a burying ground. Lightninz struck the powder warehouse of Tracy & Avery, situ ated at the eastern edge of the city, and im mediately 5,572 pounds of the explosive went up in a puff of white smoke. The residence ot Henry Roost, a laborer, and an unoccupied house owned by John C Sbaw, about 75 feet from tbe warehouse, were levelled to tbe ground as completely as If eaph timber bad been torn from Its place and thrown upon tbe cround. Mrs. Roost, bcr 5-year-old daughter and IS-montbs-nld son were in the bouse when the explosion occurred. Tbe baby wis near tho back door and tbe force of tbe explosion carried its little body 25 feet from the house. Its skull was crushed against a timber. Tbe mother and daughter were buried In the debris. The nre department and tbe unfortunate family's neighbors dug tbe two buried victims out of the debris. The little girl has an uely wound fire inches long nn tbe bead, and the skull is furrowed. Mrs. Boost's body is badly bruised and her face torn by the powder. Of tbe powder magazine not a brick or stone re mains. Pieces of bricks were thrown a quarter of a mile and buried themselves in the sides of the bills surrounding tbe valley in which the warehouse was situated. Tbe monuments in a burying ground adjoin ingthe lot upon which tbe warehouse was built were all destnned. Several blocks of jrranite Weighing 200 pounds were thrown 60 and- SO feet from their foundations, and all the trees ten inches in diameter were uroken off, French plate window class in tbe city as far away as the postoffice were shattered, and com mon window glass suffered severely. Tbe road, or rather 'street, as many buildings have been started up on it, is usually a very busy one for teamsters coming from tbe stone quarries, but luckily none were out in the storm.
