A'ETT MOUTHPIECE FOK MLEPHOHES Headers of The Dispatch who desire information on subjects relating to indus trial development and progress in mechani cal, civil and electrical engineering and the sciences can have their queries answered through this column. rpfirrjLEZD rox. thi disfxtcb.1 Prof. Zioomis gives a very interesting summary of his investigations on. the sub ject of tornadoes. He finds that while no season of the year is exempt, they occur for the most part in May and June, and gen erally between noon and sunset. The usual accompaniments are a rise in temperature, lightning and rain, and frequently hail. Their progress in this country is invariably easlwardly, the mean being 12 north of east. Their average breadth is 120 rods; length 15 miles; Telocity of progress when violent, about 30 miles an hour; duration of destructive violence, 45 seconds. The loss of human lire is remarkably email considering all the attendant con ditions, being about one to a tornado. In passing over ponds or rivers water is in variably raised in large quantities. Leeward roofs are generally taken in preference to windward. Light objects are frequently transported 3 to 20 miles, and fowls are sot infrequently picked ot most ot their feathers. This, though a singular, is un doubtedly a true phenomenon. The attempts to prove that it could be caused by the ex pansion of air in the quills, due to a passage of a vacuum have not been successful. The most singular fact is that the fowl lives under the depluming process. In some cases roosters have been seen walking around, after a tornado, crowing, and with out a feather on their barks. A feasible explanation is that an electric charge threw off the feathers much in the same way as it now and again strips the clothes from a person. The EnrfUh Sparrow. The May bulletin of the Michigan Agri cultural Experiment Station is an essay on the English sparrow. It appears that seven States legislate against this irrepressible bird. New York makes it a misdemeanor to harbor or protect them, while Michigan p3ys a bounty of 3 cents for each sparrow's head. It is recommended that one man in each town and city be employed to superin tend a systematic warfare against the un welcome guest No matter how much farmers and gardeners desire to destroy these birds it will be of comparatively lit tle avail so long as the sparrows are per mitted to stay in their great breedinghaunts, the cities, unmolested. The scheme for of fering liberal prizes for the greatest number o. birds killed in any given territory is a good one. "Whatever means are employed should be well advised and all States and Territories should be united in their efforts. One or two States alone can accomplish but little, as the sparrows are spreading so rap idly that they would migrate from adjacent States as fast as those witbin the State lim its were destroyed. The killing of useful birds should be punished. A great many of the birds that have been tent in (or a bounty in Michigan are most beneficial birds, such as the song-sparrow, the red polled linnet and the evening grossbeak, birds that the laws protect by a fine of $5 against their slaughterer. Every person proenting such a bird at the town clerk's office should pay the penalty. The Ideal Snnltnry Home. The picture of the ideal sanitary house, as drawn by a contemporary, is a pleasing one. The house will stand facing the nun, on a dry soil, in a wide, clean, amply sewered, substantially paved street, over a deep, thoroughly ventilated and lighted cellar. The floor of the cellar will be cemented, the walls and ceiling plastered and thickly whitewashed with lime every year, that the house may not act as a chimney, to draw into its chambers micro-organisms from the earth. Doors and windows will be generous in size, so as to admit ot plenty of air. The ontside walls, if of wood or brick, will be kept thickly painted, not to shut out the air, but for the sake of dryness. The inside walls will be plastered smooth, painted and Tarnished. Interior woodwork, including floors, will all be Tarnished. Movable rugs, which can be shaken daily in the open air not at the doors or out of the windows will cover the floors. Mattresses will be covered with oiled silk; blankets, sheets and spreads, no comforts or quilts, will constitute the bedding. There will be as little plumbing as possible, ana wnat tnere is will be ex posed. The hot air furnace which heats the rooms will take its supply from above the top of the house instead of the cellar, and, we are told, the "spring" cleaning will be twice a year. Gai-Burnera for Illuminating. There is a singular stagnation just now in the devising of radical improvements in gas burners. It can hardly be said that this arises from any indolence on the part of those who are identified with any of the recognized systems. Indeed, never since gas-lighting came into vogue has the nctivity of burner makers been more con spicuous ana more fruitful than daring the last eight or ten years. Progress in this re spect has been mnrh greater than in previ ous years, and it is not too much to say that in consequence tne average consumer now getsa great deal more for his money (so far as simply the combnstion of the gas goes) than did his predecessor of the last genera tion, who perhaps paid twice the present rates. Ontside the regular trade, however, there has been nothing doing for years, in spite of the daily more formidable competi tion of the electric light. The question is, what is the cause of this lull? Has the last word been said respecting the best way to develop the illuminating power of gas, or is the matured experience of the gas burner makers about to bear fruit in another cycle of improvements? Electricity In Fa Tor. A somewhat significant "sign of the times" was given at one of the sessions of the recent meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at Cincinnati. One member read a paper in which be showed that to equip and operate an ordi nary btctim rauroaa to use electricity would be so enormously expensive that it could not possibly compete with the steam locomotive. A moot spirited debate ensued. Half a dozen or more mechanical engineers rose up to defend "electric power" against the at tack, and criticised his estimates and state ments and the work of electrical engineers In general in an astonishing manner It looked like a friendly battle between the electrical engineers and the mechanical, in which the latter were fighting for instead of against electricity. BCmprt.hrn.lTe Pnrtnerehlp. The recent visit of tlie Society or Hechan leal Engineers to Ivorydale. to Inspect a large soap .actory there, has drawn attention to the profit-sharing system on whioh the factory is conducted. At the end of each ix months the net receipts above the cost of operating the works are determined. From them is first taken a dividend of 6 per cent n the capital invested, then a salary to each xneaber of the firm who has given his time to the management of the butlness, then a certain percentage ofprofiton the capital in vested. The remainder is divided among all in the employ of the firm in proportion to their wages. At the last dividend day the amount distributed was 15 per cent on the wages paid. To impress on the employes as much as possible the importance of the saving they are making, dividend day is made a great holiday, with games, picnics, etc California Fruit Production. California is now one of the principal fruit-producing centers of the world. It is more particularly in the southern part of State that this industry is most developed, and Sacramento is the center of it. It pro duces all kinds of fruits pears, peaches, figs, grapes, etc Southern California is distinguished, by very varied climates, which admit of all description of fruit cult ure. The choicest kind of table grapes are those known as Tokay. A San Francisco paper states that over an area of 15 acres planted with Tokay grapes, the vines being 14 years old, and well tended, the gross yield was valued at ?20,000. Deducting all expenses of cultivation, irrigation, trans port and commissions, the net profit was $620 per acre. This, however, is regarded an exceptional case. With the increasing fruit production of the country great atten tion is being paid to developing the sale of preserved fruits. At first these were pre pared on the evaporation system, and the i'rujt was then packed in Loxcs. This in dustry has had an enormous development, and the manufacturers of tin boxes in California are considered among the most skillful and the richest in the world. Since 1887 the yield of fruit has been so abundant that the special apparatus for artificial evaporation have.been insufficient, and recourse has therefore beeu had to nat ural evaporation by solar heat. This system has not given everywhere satisfactory re sults. In the greater part of California, however, the air is extremely dry, and the dessication of fruits under the influence of the sun is said to be absolutely perfect. Resistance of Wood Posts to Fire. The endurance of wooden posts when sub jected to the action of fire has been strik ingly shown in a fire in England, which oc curred in a large warehouse and raged with great fury for five hours. The post was found eventually but little affected by the fire. It was taken out, and, as a fnrther test, was placed in the midst of a heap of shavings, light and heavy wood, saturated with petroleum. This was ignited, and burned for two hours and a ball, at the end of which the post was withdrawn and split longitudinally with steel wedges in order to ascertain its condition. The post was pitch pine about the most inflammable wood known and yet, after an exposure of seven hours to intense beat, it contained within a quantity of perfectly uninjured and appar ently fresh wood, probably capable of sup porting the whole weight which the origi nal post was designed to carry. Value of Scientific expeditions. The work which has been done in con nection with the "Challenger" expedition is, of course, of great interest to the pure scientist, but sooner or later it will be dis covered to be of immense practical value. The reports which have been published in connection with it form a hbraryof 47 quarto volumes, with nearly 28,000 cages of letter press, more than 2,500 lithographic and chromo-lithographic plates, 400 maps, charts and diagrams, together with a great many wood cuts. The preparation and pub lication of the reports have cost no less than (440,000, and the amount recovered by sales does not yet reach 590 000. The part of the report which is specially interesting is that which gives information about harbors, tides, currents and prevailing winds of out-of-the-way spots, which will be of use to those engaged in maritime and commercial pursuits! The Andlo Telephone. A new telephone has been brought out in England, the characteristic point of which is the mouthpiece. The particular ad vantage claimed by the inventors of this mouthpiece is that it intensifies the sound waves, and thus renders it possible to carry on conversation in an ordinary tone of voice. The mouthpiece is simply a trun cated cone which is clamped on to the tele phone. By using an India rubber ring be tween the mouthpiece and the telephone, any escape of sound is entirely prevented. The cone is double, the outer cone being perforated with holes, the idea being that the vibrations caused by the sound waves on the interior cone have full freedom and are entirely protected from contact with ex ternal substances. Shortening the Trip to Europe. The scheme lor reducing the passage across the Atlantic to about three days and a half is assuming definite shape. The aim of the company which has been formed for the purpose, is to reduce the length of the Atlantic voyage to about 1,700 miles, as against 3,052 miles between New York and Liverpool. To do this it is proposed to con struct a railway alon; the north shore of the river and Gulf of St. Lawrence, from Quebec o St. Charles Bay, on the Labrador coast, a distance of 854 miles. "With vessels steam. ing 20 knots an hour, it is calculated that the distance between St. Charles Bay and ililford Haven. 1,700 miles, will be made in 3 days, 13 bours, as against the average oi 6 days, 8f hours from New York to Liverpool. Flnmelraa Combustion. The importance of flameless combustion is not sufficiently recognized. The appearance of flame is misleading, and the greater the flame the less work done, other things being equal. The tact that certain boilers give such an exceedingly small dutv for th f.mi consumed when the flues are filled from end to end with "magnificent flame" is often a puzzle to engineers. This so-called magnifi cent flame is a delusion, hollow and cold in side, and not coming in contact with the boiler at all. When the same fuel is burnt with a very small flame, hardly visible over the bridge, the duty increases some 30 per cent Bee TMaea.se. A "nameless bee disease" has tnnnwil during the last few years, and the bee keep ers have had to lament not only depleted hives, but large numbers of diseased bees. The bees look black because of loss of hair, much as do robber bees, or old bees in the spring, and frequently make strange mo tions in front ol the hives, as though danc ing or in convulsions. The disease is sup posed to be due to fungoid attack. The remedy is found in superseding the queen with a healthy one, and also in having a plentiful supply of salt water close to the hives, where the bees can gain ready access to it Banner Baking Powder, WE ALL USE i ms0tmmmmOiam&ilQ1t I " """ " W. - 'PifeKIM 1 PoWi PlRESTaMDST HEALTHFUL.
