'JfTp THE' HTTSBTJB&' DISPATOHSATURDAT;-" MAY 31', 1890,-' 3 AT EAULT. The Sad Experience of a' Man Who .Couldn't Reduce His Weight HE POUND FARMERS WERE THIN, And at Once Took to Market Gardening, as an Anti-Fat Specific HIS TIPEWKITEB SOW OCT OP A JOB A literary man of this city has been view ing with alarm for several months the rapid ity with which the lower buttons of his Test were coming into prominence. He took lone walks, dieted himself, and eren starred himselt; but it was all of no avail his waist measurement increased daily- Ihh annoyed him greatly; partly because he had heretofore prided himself on his trim figure, and partly because every time he fell over a drygooda box on the sidewalk, which his girth prevented him from seeing, he would bruise himself and ruin his clothes, and the bystanders would audibly infer that he was intoxicated. A month ago this victim of adipose tissue was seized with an idea. He was in a coun try town, on market day, and noticed that all the farmers were spare men. His in quiries led him to believe that tilling the soil was the only sure anti-fat specific TESTING HIS THEOBY. As the gentleman owns a little place in fihadyside, he determined to pnt his new theory into practice. He discharged his gardener and commenced work. He first spaded the entire lot, and viewed with satis Jaction the copious manner in which the perspiration rolled off him. His joy was turned to dismay when he discovered that the saline fluid had ruined the soil and had transformed his 60xlS0-foot park into a desert. He was not to be foiled, however. He bought and wore a large pair of rubber boots, and every time they filled up he would walk into the road and empty them. Then hi hauled soil from an adjacent lot and dnmped it on his land. By this time his hands were so sore and stiff he could not write, so he hired a pretty typewriter (all typewriters are pretty) and while she sat in the shade he would hoe and spade and dic tate. XOX A GOOD COMBHTATIOir. This combination of literature and hus bandry delighted the toiler until be read the manuscript of his romance, "Maud Mrytle'a Mysterious Marriage." One extract is sufficient. "Maud wandered down to the trystine place, and as she leaned over the old stile, murmured, 'Great hes verts, it's hot enough to roast an ox!' At this mraent Ferdinand entered the glen, and as he embraced Maud, softly whis pered, 'Mr own, I don't know whether to plant onions or sweet corn, and then planted a kiss upon her brow." The indefatigable toiler kept this sort of thing up tor ten days, and feeling confident that he (must have shrunk considerably, mounted the scales and prepared himself to be surprised at his reduced weight. "When he commenced farming he weighed 215 pounds; he weighed 233 pounds now. A Shadyside residence, is surrounded by a jungle of weeds, a pretty typewriter is looking for a position, and a man who ab hors theories has applied for admission to a fat men's club.
