FlIIE THE1TEICAL D01XGS OP IUEOPE tBT CABLE TO THE OISPJLTCH.l liOKDON. May 17. Copyright! All the arrangements are now completed for New ' York's big music hall, which is to be called the Empire, and is to be situated at Seventh avenue and Forty-second street, tne present ite of Tattersall's. Tbejscheme is the idea of John Hollingshead, founder of the Gaiety Theater in London, and one of the founders of the Alhambra Music Hall, who is at present director of the Cyclorama, "Niagara in London." Two years ago Hollingshead made an offer, through Captain Connor, of the St. James Hotel, and "William J. Florence, for f the Academy of Music, with a view u es .oM5t1i!nff ft mnsio hal hut the nroiect was not carried out Out of this idea the present achemc has grown. A company has been formed with $1,000,000 capital, half of which has been subscribed in America and half in London, President Hyde, of the Equitable Insurance Company, being alarge holder in New Xork. The Selicmans, ot London, have financed the company here. Captain Eichard Bainbridge, the successful English theatrical manager, who is on the EtruriR, has the plans of the New York Em pire, drawn by J. Phipps, the eminent Lon don architect, with whom in the construc tion of the new theater will be associated the architect of the Broadway Theater. ON THE 10NDON PLA2T. The performances to be given will be on the olan of the Empire and Alhambra Music Halls in London, and two directors ot each of these houses will be on the board of direction of the New York Empire. One feature of the new enterprise will be a roof garden for summer and winter, with a big restaurant and cafe. The house will be con structed with a senarate entrance to the private boxes, and the design is to make it a place of amusement for all classes. The permanent manager will be Captain Bainbridge, sissociated with an American manager. Hollingshead will be attached to the enterprise as consulting director, and he will probably go to New York to organize and open the house. The new theater will be opened so soon as the building can be constructed. Steele Mackey's drama, "Paul Kanvar." with "William Terriss in the title role, and Hiss Milward as Diane de Beaumont, has proved a success at Drury Lane, and the big theater has been crowded all week. The play is very well done, Miss Milward being particularly effective in the pathetic and passionate parts, though Terriss is a trifle stagey. Hudson, who will be remembered in America as burlesquing Irving while playing in "Claudian" with Wilson Barrett, broke out afresh the first night of "Paul Kauvar," in which he took the part of the duke, his walk, conversation and general conduct reminded one of Dixey's imitation, and when he appeared as a disguised aristo crat, he might have been taken for Irving himself. CHANGED HIS IXBTD. On Tuesday the entire London press came down on Hudson with so mnch energy and unanimity that ever since tbe actor has been doing bis best to be as unlike the great tragedian as possible. Terriss will not re main in tbe cast of Paul Kauvar. On Monday he returns to the Lyceum stage, and his part will be played by Lawrence Cantley, and when Irving leaves the Grand gSSr55 Business and Professional Men, Clerks, Bookkeepers, Salesmen, Etc., Your calling requires stylish, nobby and becoming clothing, and, if you will but come here TO-MORROW OR TUESDAY, We will show you at the low price of ID till The very Suits you desire and need. GOLD-HEADED UMBRELLAS GIVEN FREE. iM As a special inducement, we will brella gratis with every one of the did you ever hear of a more liberal at Islington, the principal suburban theater of Loudon, Terriss will produce there a new American melodrama, "The Great Metropo lis." The retirement of Geraldme TTlmar from the Savoy Theater was not due to any diffi cultv between the star and the management. It was only that the young lady thought she had been singing the same kind or parts too long, and that she desired a rest. At the same time she has probably been influenced by the fact that she has for several months past been receiving offers from various man agers in New York and London, though D'Oyly Carte offered to top any salary any other manager offered. Miss TJlmar has ac cepted no offer as yet, and she declares that she will listen to no propositions nntil she has visited home. She leaves the Savoy June 15, and sails forNew York on the 20th. The row that finally ruptured the firm of Gilbert and Sullivan is said to have been all on account of a carpet. Their business has always been done on a sharing system, expenses of all kinds being charged against the receipts, and the profit that Is left di vided between Gilbert.Sulhvarfand D'Oyly Carte, their manager. While Gilbert was in India, just after the production of the "Gondoliers," Carte purchased some new carpets lor the theater, and when Gilbert returned he objected to the expense. A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION. Carte maintained that the purchase was justifiable, and the two appealed to Sulli van, who sided with Carte. As a great many people have occasion to know Gilbert is endowed with a temper that is not mild, and when he gets into a tow he generally sees it through. He did in this instance, and the result has been a dissolution ot partnership. Gilbert is now looking lor a composer to collaborate with, and it is said that Alfred Cellier will be the new partner, or at least that he will collaborate with Gilbert in a new opera, with which Horace Sedgcr will commence his occupancy of the Lyric Theater. Sullivan does not want a new .partner, as he declares that he will confine himself hereafter to grand opera. This combination of circumstances will necessitate a change of policy at the Savoy Theater after the run of the "Gondoliers" is over. D'Oyly Carte's new theater is ex pected to be ready in fall for the production of Sullivan's grand opera "Ivanhoe." Agnes Huntington's enforced temporary retirement from the stage by Augustus Harriss' brutality is not entirely without its compensations. The beautiful American has become a great favorite in the high world of London, and she is in constant de mand at all manner ot social lunctions. Last night she was one of half a dozen guests to dine with the King of the Bel gians at the residence of Baroness Burdett Coutts. Another Amerjcan girl present was Mrs. Joseph Chamberlain. Madam Sembrich has been installed by acclamation first operatic favorite at Ber lin. The other evening the audience at Kxoll's Theater cheered her for Jen min utes and the stage was covered with bou quets. REFUSED ALL ENCORES. A disgraceful scene of polite society row dyism was witnessed in the big Albert Hall on Wednesday, upon tbe occasion of tbe re appearance of Patti. The prima donna was suffering from a bad cold, caught, it is un derstood, in New York, and made worse by the sea air on the passage. Some of the audience were informed ot the fact, but Manager Kuhe evplained that rather than disappoint the public Patti would sing three songs. The people, however, were in bad humor owing to the non-appearance of Tenor Sims Beeves, and when Patti de clined encores they howled and stamped and raved, and refused to allow the concert to proceed. Kuhe appealed for fair play, but failed to obtain a hearing from these well-dressed ruffians. A famous violoncellist tried to charm their savage breasts, but with so little success that he finally pranced off the plat :orm in disgust, taking his big instrument with him. The row continued for a consid erable time, and order was only restored by a threat to clear the hall. Patti left the place after the third song, much agitated at the people's want of forbearance.
