THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, THURSDAY, MAT 1. ,1890. " rv p LIVE STOCK REVIEW. Cattle Markets Demoralized at East Liberty on Monday. PARTIAL RECOVER! ON TUESDAY, Brought About by Hear Shipments to Principal Eastern Points. BHEEP FIEM AT LAST WEEK'S KATES OFFICE OF PITTSBURG DISPATCH Wednesday. April SO. IS9Q. The cattle market opetied up Monday morning with about 100 loads offered, an ex cess of 35 loads over the previous Monday; and on account of this liberal supply buyers had the field. Prices at once dropped from 15c to 25c per cwton all grades excepting stockers and feeders, which were in short supply. The receipts were principally from Chicago, Omaha and other far Western points. Quality was a good average, but there were no prime beeves in carload lots offered. Markets were badly demoralized all Monday morning, until some relief was found by tbe shipment of about 15 loads on .East in first hands. After this shipment mar kets steadied up at the lower prices. On Tuesday the run was very light, not being above four loads, and markets partially recov ered tho lost ground. The advance on Tues day for good butcher stock was equal to 10c on the lowest point touched on Monday. Tbe greatest decline was on common and low grade Hock, and this grade gave least response to the upward movement o! Tuesday. The best stock on tbe market did not bring over $4 75. One commission man reported cattle sales at H 35, which would have qulcklv brought H 60 last week. Anotner reported sales of two loads of choice Indiana beeves at 4 70, which he be lieved to be tbe highest price reached in the Liberty yards this week. Desirable feeders, weighing 800 to 1,100 Rs., were steady at last week's prices, tbe range being 3 to 4c per ft. A few of tbe loner grades of fat cattle were boucht for feeders. There were some 1,200 calves on the market yesterday, and the move ment was slow at a range of SJ to 4c per ft. Sharp, IjRmb. find divine. Sheep and lambs have ruled strong at last weec's prices. The rue for the week has been about 24 loads. The season has passed for wool sheep in this market. There were cone of tills class on sale. Some Chicago wool sheep which arrived yesterday were sent on in first hands to Philadelphia, for the reason that only clipped sheen are wanted in this market. There were iio extra lambs on tbe market. Tbe range for the best offered (clipped) was4 Gc Si. Supply of bogs has been light and markets held up fairly well to lat week's prices on Monday, with H 60 as the top price. Tuesday markets were slow at a shade lower prices. 2 here were only about 5 loads on sale this morning, and no improvement. In Chicago to day, according to advices received by one nf leading pork packers, tbe top price was S4 20. Tbe demand from buthcers is growing very light owing to warm weather. "WEAEY KTENACE MEN, Oat They Will Stand Dp to tho Knelt and Take tbe Iron Ore Medicine. A well-known pig iron msnulacturer of Ohio was at the Duquesne Hotel. He never objects to talking as long as his name is withheld, but that doss not detract from the truth of what he says. "The pig iron men," said he, "hare been hit, but we are not squealing. The dull season is ahead of us, and the only prospects we have are that we will lose all we have made in the last two years. Some of the weaker ones in the business may go to the wall, but most of the fnrnace men will be able to weather tbe storm. "The furnace men have made big con tracts for ore at advanced prices, and they will have to take it. Since then tbe price of ore has dropped as well as pip iron. But we are not squealing. Every contract lor ore will be filled. It is useless to deny the truth any longer, but the price of steel bil lets, blooms, etc., has gone down at least 510. Meanwhile coke keeps up. and every small plant in the regions is at work. This state of affairs can't last much longer, and coke will have to take a tumble. The coke rates to the Mahoning and Shenango valleys are too high, and the valley association wi'll soon petition for a reduction. There is no prospect lor improvement in the market until after midsummer." pig iron Don't run the risk of vour cold getting well of llsell you may thereby drift into a condition favorable to the development of some latent tendency, which mav give you years of trouble. ' Wheat Braces Up on a Bullish Crop Re portCorn nnd Oats Score nn Advance Pork Active nnd Hither. CHICAGO New life was infused into tbe market to-day and a large business In wheat was transacted. Outside orders were more numerous, and notwithstanding a prominent trader sold very freely, the market held up and advanced steadily from the opening. There was a general buying movement In which tbe country was well represented. The opening was about the same as yesterday's closing, and prices wero advanced with only slight fluctua tions lc for Jolv. then eased off some, again rallied and closed about lc higher than yesterday. Jnnc advanced Hfc and closed l?c higher, and May advanced Je, closing e hicher than yeste'rday. Tho principal factor in the market was the bulllsl crop report of the Jarmer' Hevieie, as sent in these dispatches last night. The weather in tbo Northwest is reported dry and warm, and that rain would be beneficial. The influences mentioned Induced some active covering by shorts and general buying. What puzzled operators was that a prominent trader who bad been identified with tbe long side should bavs sold so freely, and in suite of this the market advanced rapidly. It fully de monstrated that one-man power Is of no avail now-a-days against a movement, be it bnjlug or selling, in which the public is Interested. Corn was traded in to a considerable extent, though most of tbe business consisted in chancing Mav to tbe more deferred deliveries, particularly July, at a difference of lc The feeling early in tbe day around tbe opening was rather heavy, but later the market firmed. It opened a shade under yesterday's closing, gradually sold up KXc, ruled steady and closed i-iiilic better than yesterday. Oats were stronger, and advanced c,and closed steady at full outside figures. There was less pressure to sell, and quite a good demand from shorts, who absorbed tbe offerings freely. Trading in pork was more active, and prices wero decidedly higher, although outside prices were not fully supported. The feeling was un settled, and prices were irregular within a mod erate range. They advanced 2025c, and the market closed steady at medium figures. Quite an active business was transacted in short ribs. Tbe feeling was stronger, and prices were advanced 1012Kc. and the Improvement was fairly well supported. A fairly active trade was reported p lard.and a stronger feeling developed. Prices were ad vanced 7j10c, and tbe appreciation was mod erately well suoported. The leadlnc futures rancea as follows: Wheat No. 2. ApriL 8SK8S9JSSKeS9c: May, SSK689SSKSSr: juue. 8! is 81-c: Jmv. Oyer $100,000 Paid for Thirty-Six Acres of Land in the East End. A SYNDICATE MAKES THE GOBBLE. loan? Men Combine to Speculate in Beal Estate on an Extensive Scale. EUSIKESS MOVEMENTS AND GOSSIP One of the largest deals in real estate that have occurred in the East End for a long time was consummated yesterdav when Black & Baird and "V. A. Herron & Sons sold the Samson trast, consisting of 36 acres, situated on both sides of Joncaiie street and adjoining the Schenley Park, for $4,000 per acre for the portion between Joncaire street and the park and $2,000 per acre for the re mainder, making tbe total amount of the sale $102,500. The purchase was made by a syndicate or ganized by Black & Baird. The property will be subdivided and put on the market shortly. Mr. Samson purchased it last fall through Messrs. Herron & Sons. He realized a handsome profit from the Investment. Young Men Arc Hnatllng. A peculiar feature of the real estate business In Pittsburg is the large nnmber of persons who are handling it In one form or another. This is seen in the number of organizations which have been formed within a short time for the special purpose of speculation in land. These number at least half a dozen In the city proper. They are composed for tho most part 6T young men, many of whom possess consider able capital and influence. The newest of these organizations has a membership of 150, and others from 50 to 100. The plan of opera tions is based upon a system of dues, somewhat similar to that of tbe building and loan associa tions, and tbe object in view is the purchase of acreage, with a view to subdivision and future sale. Their field of activity Is not confined to Pitts burg, but extends to other localities, Including some of tbe Western States, where they have acqnired several large tracts, one or two of which have been sold within a short time at a handsome advance on the purcbase price. One of the companies owns an extensive body of land in the East End district, and another is negotiating an im portant deal on the Southside. Among the members are a number of city and county offi cials and quite a sprinkling of attorneys. Re ports from private, but trustworthy, sources show tbat all the companies are making money. w Local Wall Street Goaalp. Six months ago a young lady drew 500 from the Fittsbnrc Bank for Savings and, on the ad vice of her agent, invested tbe amount m real estate. Yesterday she sold ber interest in tbe investment for 625. Messrs. Graco & Co. report a marked im provement in the insurance business within the past week or two, doe principally to the large number of new houses that are being oc cupied. Yesterday was pay day at all of the banks In Pittsburg and vicinity, and the clerks nearly 800 in number were the happiest people in the city. The reason assigned by some of the brokers, including Mr. E.P. Long, for tho weakness in Westinghouse Electric is the frequency of liti gation with rival companies, which absorbs a large share of tbe earnings. Tho first street railroad operated in Pittsburg was tbe Citizens' line alone Penn avenue to Lawrencevlllc which was completed in 1854. Business is dull in Pittsburg, is it? Let us see. The bank cleanngs for April were the largest for any month since the establishment of the Clearing House in 1S67, and were 12, 000,000 greater than for tbe corresponding month last year. Comment is unnecessary. The Keystone Grain, Stock and. Commission Company is making arrangements to tempora rily retire from business, and patrons have been notified to close their deals, preoaratory to a full settlement. Mr. McMullin, tbo head of the firm and a prominent and wealthy gen tleman, stated yesterday that ho bad been led to adopt this course by the rapid rise in all commodities, which made a continuance of business through tbe presont flurry decidedly hazardous. The move is more in tbe nature of a shut-down than a suspension, and the impres sion largely prevails that it will be temporary. Movements In Renl Estate. Fears of the Result of Comlns Labor Dem onstrations Depress Values In Wall Street Weakness nnd Dull ness the Pentnres. New York, April 30. The stock market showed some incroase in trading to-day, hut tbat was all in tbe afternoon, while feverish and irregular most of the time, and for the first time in many days the final changes show a majority of losses, though they are confined to fractional amounts in all cases. The reaction was due to a combination of causes, though tbe chief of tbem is probably the desire of sold out bulls to recover their sales at a profit. There is also a feeling of uneasiness over labor demon strations to be held to-morrow, both here and abroad, and the question as to whether these demonstrations will pass off quietly or with a series of strikes and consequent demoralization of business. In adition to this there is the lack of anything to show a probability of an early settlement of the Western railroad fight, as the news of such settlement circulated yesterday was evidently premature. There seems to be no confidence tbat Missouri Pacific and the Rock Island will atrreo on terms, but the fight of these roads nas almost ceased to be a disturbing element in the general market, though a settlement would prohablr add to the general feeling of confi dence and aid tbe speculation. Somo events of minor importance such as the large bank failure in Philadelphia and the usual tem porary scarcity of money incident to the first of the month had their influence. The leading features of the day were St. Paul, Rock Island, Northern Pacific preferred, Canada Southern and Wheeling and Lake Erie common, and those stocks are the only ones showing any improvement at tbe close of tho dav. On the othor band. New England, Mis souri Pacific Lake Shore and some of tbo specialties were most conspicuous for weak ness. The great sustaining factor in tho market was still the unusually large amount of purchases for the foreign account, notwith standing the fact that to-day was a holiday in Berlin and to-morrow will bo ono in London. There was no response to the London buying this morning, ana first prices were generally unchanged or but slightly different from last ovening's figures. Pressure to sell, notwith standing the support of the foreigners, caused a fractional recession in the early dealings, which was followed by a comparative dullness. This seemed to bnug in new business; tbo market recovered slonly until late in tbe day, when high rates for money, which roso to 6 per cent, sagged tbe list off, tbougb tbe close was quite firm. Tbestrengtu shown at times by Canada Southern, Rock Island, Burlington and Quincy and Northern Pacific preferred helped on the rally materially. Tbe final changes are witnout exception tor iractionai amounts omy. Railroad bunds also felt the reaction temper in the market. While there was still an active business transacted, dealings were changed to eaviness, anu to-nignt tnere is snsjon'jm important changes in quotations. Considera ble irrecularity marked trading, while Reading convertible incomes, Michigan Central 7s, tbe HockingValley Issues and Alton dividends were tho strong features. Northern Pacific termin als, Norfolk and Western 7s, Lackawanna con vertibles and some others were prominently weak. Transactions foot up 2,278.000. out of which Atchison incomes famished 315,100. The Posl says: The news to-day was of a bullish character. Mr. Gould's statement re specting his position had a strong effect on tbe market, and the prospect of a settlement out West of troubles increased the bullish feeling. The chief factor in tbe market, however, was the buying lor foreign account, together with the easy condition of the money markets both here and abroad. The advance of four points in Green Bay Income bonds in tbo last week is oelieved to bo a preliminary move in an ad vance of all Green Bav, Winona and St. Paul securities. Tbe immediate cause of the advance is the fact that Delaware, Lackawanna and Wesiern controls Green Bay and Winona, and have recently made large subscriptions to se curities of Winona, and Southwestern is ptb ingtbe completion of its line to Omaha, which will give Lackawanna a through line to tbat point. Lackawanna people are therefore in terested in uiakingthe securities of both Green Brfy and Winona, and the Winona and South western active. The features were North ern Pacific preferred, St. Paul. Rock Island, Louisville and San Francisco stocks. The following table shows the prices or active stocks onthe Sew York Stock Exchange yester day. COMPLAINTS OF IKDIFFEEEHCE. Efforts Being Mndn lo-fllr Up the Pride of Scotch-Irish Citizens. Recently some astonishment has been created by the complaint that preparations to entertain and care lor the delegates to the second Scotch-Irish Congress, to be held in this city about a month from now, were dragging, and that a few men, among them Col". Echols, Col. "W. A. Herron, Mr. Mc Allister and a few others, were allowed to do all the work. It wouldj seem there is something tangible in the complaint, as the Entertainment Com mittee has sent out a rather pungent circu lar for a meeting of the committee to-day at City Hall, in which, among other things, is found the following: "The reputation of our city is at stake. Shall it be sustained 'or shall Pittsburg's fame for lree-hearted hospitality be tar nished simply by the lack of interest thns far displayed by her representative citi zens?" LATE NEWS IN BRIEF. Contractors have been buying very sparingly tbe past week, in view of the question to be decided on Monday between labor and capital. Once this Is satisfactorily settled there will, no doubt, be a boom in all lumber lines. Seasoned hemlock is still scarce, but unseasoned is plenty, and dry weather will soon cure things.
