'."' : y.vw THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, .WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 1890. 3 THE WILL UNBROKEN. Hampton Miller Fails to Prove His ; father Was Out of His Mind. :JUDGE OVER DISMISSES THE CASE. The Divorce Mill Keeps Up Its Usual Grind of Woe and Miserj. HA.NI MIKOK CODET HAPPEKIXGS The contest of the 'will of the late Alexan der H. Miller, Esq., concluded yesterday in the Orphans' Court. The testimony ad duced was in the same line as the pre ceding day. Holmes Miller, a son of the de ceased, testified to his father drinking, but he never saw him under the influence of liquor. W. A. Lewis, Esq., heard Mr. Miller say that his son Hampton was not strong enough to work. GantMillerJalso testified that his father said all he wanted Hampton to do -was to take care of the place and do the market ing. Attorney Raymond asked for a continuance of the case, as a number of witnesses on his side had failed to appear. The characterjof the additional evidence was cumulative, and he wished to submit questions on the effect of the nse of liquor on the brain. Judge Over re fused to grant a continuance on these grounds, and Mr. Raymond closed his case, tie made his argument, and court adjourned for dinner. "When it reconvened in the afternoon Judge Over handed down the following decision: "The appellant has not adduced a scintilla of evidence to sunport a verdict against the will. and the appeal, therefore, )s dismissed at the cost of the appellant, Hampton J. Miller." It is reported that by the decision Hampton Miller will lose bis annuity of J500 per year, left him by his father, for appealing the will, la the latter was a clause to this effect, bnt it is said Florence will not enforce it, as he has no desire to cut his brother off. WANT TO BUILD THE BRIDGE. Fecn People File a Protest Against Award Ing r Contrnet to a Rival. The Penn Bridge Company of Beavc yester day entered a protest before the Connty Com missioners against the awarding of the contract for the superstructure of the Beaver bridge to the Pittsburg Bridge Company. When the bids for the work were tabulated it was found that the Penn Bridge Company bad bid 21,925 and the Pittsburg Comnany $2,210. As both companies had bid on all the county bridges advertised, and the total of tho Pitts burg Company's bids tor all the work was less than that of the Penn Company, all the bridges were given to the Pittsburg Company, the Com missioners preferring to cive all to one firm. The Penn Company, however, entered a pro test, claiming they should get the Beaver bridge. THEY ASK TO BE DIT0BCED. The Separation mill Doles Ont Its Usual Grist ot Tales of Woe. Mrs. Sarah Fulton yesterday entered suit agam6t James and Mary Brown for $5,000 dam ages for the alienation of her husband's affec tions. She states that she was married to Jobn Fnlton on September 21. 1661. and lived happily with him until September 1, 1SS7. Upon that date the defendants unlawfully enticed and persuaded her husband to forget the attention to her. Mrs. Josephine Schwarz yesterday sued for a divorce from Wilhelm Schwarz. She alleged that he treated her cruelly and finally deserted her. James McLaren. Esq., was appointed com missioner in tho divorce case of Mrs. H. EL Grove against George W. Grove. MECHANICS GOING WEST. Tbey arc In Demnml in ibe State of Wash lnston nnd Orepon. Thomas Speer, the passenger agent of the Union Pacific road, reports a fair business west from Pittsbnrg. He frequently books as many as 40 people a week to western points. Many of them, he says, are me chanics who have offers of good wages from growing towns in Oregon and Washington. The number of round trip tickets sold keeps up the average. The outlook for western tourist business is fair. On Ills Wnr to Home. Bishop Monogne, of Sacramento, with his private secretary, passed through the city yesterday, bound for itome to see the Pope about diocesan matters. He paid fine com pliments to Bishop Phelan and Andrew Carnegie. He thinks Pittsburg is a won derful city. Looking for Water, Not Oil. Mr. T. B. Atterbury states that the report of the strike of an oil well upon his prop erty in Shadyside is a baldheadea yarn. The facts are that an artesian well is to go down 60 feet, and that 30 feet has been put down, but that water is expected, and not oiL Gratifying to AIL The high position attained and the universal acceptance and approval of the pleasant liquid fruit remedy Syrup of Figs, as the most excel lent laxative known, illustrate tbe value of the qualities on which its success is based and are abundantly gratifying to the California Fie Syrup Company. A Perfect Revolution In prices at our store. We have organized the greatest sacrifice of fine clothing ever held in this United States. Proipect of tbn .scotch-Irish Congress Brightening Up Considerably. The Executive Committee of the Scotch Irish Congress and the International Sun day School Association yesterday held a joint meeting at the office of Colonel J. "W. Echols, in Power Hall, and opened bids for the transmution of Machinery Hall into an auditorium. The bids, which were accor ding to Architect Bailey's plans, varied in amount from $3,800 to $1,566, the amount of the lowest bid, which had been submitted by Crazier Brothers, of Allegheny, to whom the contract was awarded at that figure. Work will be commenced without loss of time, and pushed forward to early comple tion. Eev. George "W. Chalfant has accepted a position on the Finance Committee of the Scotch-Irish Congress, and will commence an onslaught upon the capitalists forthwith. Things are beginning to move along, and the public seems imbued with the idea that the Congress is going to be the biggest meet ing ever occurring in Pittsburg. CANDIDATES GETTING ABOUND LIVELY. How Tbclr Cnnvnsaea Could Assist the Census Supervision. Political matters are quite lively in the, Allegheny district these days. Beside the stir in the Congressional contest, a great deal of activity is being shown in the Sena torial canvass. John 2T. Neeb, for a stout man, seems to be getting over a terrific lot of ground while the cool weather is in his favor. If all the candidates for the various of fices are making as thorough a canvass, au Allegheny politician suggested yesterday, that tbey would be able to make pretty lair census returns to Mr. Oliver, without need for any enumerators beyond them in that district. FIXING UP LEON BATES. A Cat Expected In Transcontinental Tnrlflii to the rnclflc The Pittsburg Committee of Freight Agents will meet in the Lake Shore office to-day to fix up Eastern iron rates, in ac cordance with the proposed reduction. It is currently reported here that a cut in transcontinental rates to the Pacific coast will be made in a week or so. The Denver rates continue to be badly demoralized, and consignees are holding off orders. No Word From Sir. Carnegie. John S. Lambie was asked yesterday whether Mr. Andrew Carnegie would arrive in the city to-day or to-morrow to confer with the councilmanic committee and library commission, in regard to the new library. Mr. Lambie said he had not heard from Mr. Carnegie, and could not say whether he wonld arrive to-day or not. Will Bnrn Coke. The road is about to accomplish its inten tions. The plan will avoid dirt and smoke. A Lesson. Go to the traveling man, learn his -ways and be wise. Mr. C. W. Battel!, a New York traveling man representing S.
