v?r- THE PITTSBURG- ' DISPATCH, FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1890. WORKING FOR AVEEK Census Supervisor Oliver Calls on All the Local Candidates TO SHORTEN THE CAMPAIGN A BIT. He Bursts That the Primaries he Held on May 31 and Jane 3. THE HOTEME.NT MEETS WITH FATOR Census Supervisor Oliver called a meet ing in his office yesterday afternoon or the gentlemen who will be candidatesatthecom injr Republican conventions iu this county. Among those present were Samuel F. Con tier, who desires to succeed himself as Regis ter John X. Neeb and James S. Rutan, candidates for State Senator; Michael B. Lemon, for Legislature; W. H. McCleary, for Sheriff; George Shiras III., for Congress; James Greer, for Controller; John Bradley, for Prothonotary; George Von Bonnhorst, for Recorder; John Bell, for Treasurer, and William Flinn, for Senator. 31r. Oliver asked the gentlemen to agree to holding the primaries and convention one week earlier than the dates fixed on May 31 and June 3, instead of Jnne 7 and 10. He said this would be necessary to prevent interference with the work ot taking the census, which commences on June 1, as many of the enumerators would undoubtedly be interested in the political campaign, and would therefore give less attention to census taking. LESS TIME FOE WORE. Some discnsion followed, during which Mr. Sniras stated that it would be a little hard upon him to lose a week when making a campaign against snch a strong man as Con gressman Bayne, but he finally conceded the point, provided the other candidates were agreed. The other centlcmen expressed them selves as satisfied with the nroposaL Mr. Oliver will write to those candidates not present at yesterdaj's meeting, and if there is no objection from them he will go before the County Committee on Saturday and ask that the dates be changed. After the meeting Messrs. Neeb and Rutan, who are making a hot fight for the Twelfth dis trict Scnatorsbip, bantered each other to walk together through the district. Mr. Rutan was of the opinion that he could outwalk Mr. Neeb, bnt the latter, while disclaiming any sprinting ability, thought he conld stay as long as Mr. Rutan. and perhaps a little longer. The promenade was finally agreed to, to take place at a date not jet fixed. GETTING DOWN TO tVOBK. The fight is centering on Bayne and Shiras in the Twenty-third district. The former has the advantage of experience in the matter, and, like. an old hunter, he knows where the best came is to be found and at what hours. Mr. Shiras is a very young man, and the way his friends are whooping it up for bim is causing many an old-timer to remark that the young 'un has a winning pace. It was authoritatively stated yesterday that orders had been received in the offices of Col lectors Warmcastle and Dravo to work for Bavne. The order, it was stated, came from Senator Qnav on Wednesday.and the machinery is now in motion for Congressman Bayne. Mr. Shiras' friends say he can carry nine wards in Allegheny without turning a hair. FEW CHANGES MADE. Allegheny Councils' Standlnjr Committees for 1S90-1S91 Annonnerd. There were ery few changes made in the standing committees of the Allegheny Councils yesterday. The company has just gotten their plant un der way, having started April 1, and the resig nation of Mr. Carroll may be somewhat of a . urprise to people ouUide the business. Judge Ewing yesterday made an order directing Controller Speer to show cause why he should not pay Constable J. Z. Brown, of the Third ward, Allegheny, costs in a case. A woman was tried on the charge of keeping a disorderly house, and was ac quitted, but ordered to pay the costs. She went to jail, and Constable Brown de manded his costs from the county. Con troller Speer refused to pay, as the woman was not sentenced on the charge for which she was tried. A test case was then made of the mat ter. It the decision is against the Controller, it is estimated that it will cost the county about $60,000 to pay fees outstanding in similar cases. COMMISSIONS OS THE FOETKAlTS.
