THE PITTSBURG ' DISPATCH, . FRIDAY, APRIL 11,' 1890. MAKING km KOISE, Bat the Great Groyeton Gusher's Per formance Justifies All of It. A CASE WHEEE SEKTIHEKT PAID. The Forest Grove Well Kovr Putting Out 1,600 Barrels a Daj. EXPERTS' CALCULATIONS ALL AWEI The A. B. Young Farm oil well is still the wonder of all who vis.it Forest Grove, and il is something to blow about.-beinc the largest well ever struck in Allegheny county, is within fire miles of the city, and rankshich among the greatest cushers ever found in the State, demonstrating that the supposed treacherous hundred-foot sand has capabil ities hitherto undreamed of in this county. A reporter of The Dispatch spent an hour at the well yesterday, and having seen the Grant well at Pithole City and scores of other cushers in the upper oil country, as well as some of the famous ones in Butler, Beaver and Washington counties, he speaks whereof he knows, and he is certain to a dot that what the drilier of this T. J. Vander grift prize told him of her is reliable, and the driller said she was making 1,500 or 1,000 barrels a day. "Were the gas which is expelling the oil utilized, this ?52-an-honr gusher would make in ad dition a fair payer as a gas well. There was hut one flow pipe at work and great care was necessary in letting on the force that it should not be great enough to drive the oil out of the tank, even when the fluid was six feet from the top. The roar that accompanied the flow was equal to that of escaping steam from a locomotive boiler earring 300-pounds pressure of steam. LOCATION OF THE WELL. The well is located near the head of Hall's run, and In making that section Nature has played pranks that appear to make almost any revelation possible, even though ber work can not be traced down to the nnstratified withont shafting. It was once a favorite ground for the exploration of nascent geologists. Some 30 odd years ago coppernuegets were found along Its course, and a company was formed to work the mineral, but the Civil War broke out and the enterprise was abandoned and never resus citated. A- such minerals are supposed.orrather known, to belong to the metamorphic or vol canic furmation.it is supposed either that Mr.Lo had dropped some copper in the neighborhood or that it had been salted by designing people. Immemorial floods have cut through the strata for some 300 feet in a section regarding the use of which some utilitarians have been speculat ing for many years. It has been regarded for some time past, until the Depp wells were struck, as gas territory, but that strike upset all preconceived and semi-scientific theories, and now were the drill to strike gold dollars, the Inhabitants would not be surprised. Like the Dutchman who thonght it barely possible that a man might bite bis own ear off. they think there is "nodmgs impossible mit God." The strike has turned values topsy-turvy in that neighborhood, and no property holder knows what be is worth now. Superintendent Gus B. Young, of the city mail delivery service, was at the well, and he told how sentiment had made bim and the other heirs of the paternal acres value their homestead. The few acres reserved can now be leased for the price of prince's ransom and without depreciating its value as an heirloom. Mrs. McElherron. mother of Captain William McEIherron. has been offered a fortune as bonns on her farm near by. but she was not known to have leased yesterday. THE ALCHEMICAL BOEEE. The old Quinn farm, which corners within a few feet of the well, was sold to a man named Scbuler, of the West End, not long ago, for 65 an acre. The present owner leased it on Mon day to Gillespie Bros, for a bonus of $115 an acre and the usual royalty. It is said that it ought to be good oil territory, as the soil Is so thin and poor that, as one man says, two drunken men could not raise a light on it and it would have to be fertilized before you could makn bricks on it. It is certainly, judging from appearance, pretty well worked out. Rev. Dr. Beacom's salary seems to be pretty well assured, as the parsonage, a small lot of ground has been leased on a royalty and $2,000 bonus and an acre belonging to the, Ening estate, which one of the heirs allows the con gregation to use for sheds iu which to house their horses while attending church service, is leased for $500 and one-eighth royalty. The Fort Pitt Gas Company has this lease along with several other good ones, including the Depp farm. It is said that the lease on John McKeown's 0 acres, cornering in the Young well, had been forfeited, but unluckily for bim he accepted 50 back rent one day last week, and thus re vived the lease and cut himself out of several thousand dollars' boons. A big well, however, will make him comfortable, and there seems to be no doubt in the minds of operators that he will yet realize handsomely. The trouble is that not only will the people thus tied np under old leases lose the big bonus now offered those who did not lease, but the operators having them shnt in can take their time to dcvelope. A part ot the McClelland farm has been condemned by a failure, but the remainder is now regarded as very valuable, but it is also tied bv an old lease, and the Standard has some good territory shut in across the gorge to the south of the gusher. PALMING THE PLUGS, A Thorouch Inspection of the Water Sup ply to be Daily Mnde E. M. Birelow, Chief of the Department of Public Works, is having every Ore ping iu the city numbered, and tbey will be Inspected daily, reports being returned to the Superin tendent of the Burean of Water Supply. The object is to insure better fire protection. as many complaints have been made when large tires occurred of defective plugs, and this will prevent their being outof ordcrsufflciently long to endanger property. Mrs. Maria Covert and P. Smith yesterday filed their answers in the suits brought by the Fidelity Title and Trust Company, assignee of the Lawrence Bank, against the stockholders of the Lawrence Savings Bank, to recover S181.60S 85 on notes with interest, etc. Mrs. Covert denies that she was ever a partner in the Lawrence Savings Bank, and if her name appears on the book as a stockholder, the stock was pnt in her name by her husband, and with out her knowledge or consent, and when she was a married woman and unable to make con tracts. Continuing, her answer and that of sir. Smith, states that the Lawrence Savings Bank was wound up in 1877, and any indebtedness Is denied, the same statements being made as in the other answers already filed. Wnnts Ills Share ns Depositor. The suit of Alexander McGilvray against John Phillips, Fred Gwkmer and Stephen Mercer, late partners as the Manchester Savings Bank, is on trial before JndceWhlte. McGilvrav was both a stockholder and a depositor in the bank. It went into liquidation in 1878. and the stocxholders raised money to pay the depositors. Llentennnt Dennlson Holds the Lucky Num ber In n Watcb Ruffle. Two Italian newsboys, sitting on either end of a bench, plunging a pair of very dirty bands into two boxes of cards, and John J. Davis watching the performance, was the spectacle to be seen yesterday. The boys were "going it blind," as both were hoodwinked, and an inter ested crowd of newspaper men was waiting the result. Some 75 cards had been drawn from each box, when No. 126 made its debut simul taneously with a ticket from the other end marked "watcb." and Lieutenant Robert Den niston. of the police force, was declared the winner of Thomas E. Hewitt's gold watch. It was handed last night to the Lieutenant, who expressed himself as highly pleased with the luck which had befallen bim. Grutifvinc to All. The high position attained and the universal acceptance and approval of the pleasant liquid fruit remedy Syrup of Figs, as the most excel lent laxative known, illustrate tbe value of the qualities on which its success is based and are abundantly gratifying to the California Fig Syrup Company. Fashionable Clothes Should be as honest and sterling in fabric as they are stylish in appearance. Such are the characteristics of the boys'and children's suits designed and made by Messrs. Brokaw Bros., of New York. This spring's makes are unusually attractive in appearance, and the little fellows will never look better than when dressed in one of this firm's short pant suits. Nothing else gives a fine boy a more pleasing appearance; and certainly no other make of clothes can outwear these. A. L. Sailor, Sole Agent for Pittsburg, mtvp Cor. Sixth and Liberty sts.
