THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, "WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9,, 189a MUST LITE IN CARS. Lots of Grand Army Men Who Intend to Go to Boston in August WILL HATE TO SLEEP STANDING, Unless Tier Have ilreadj Secured Better Accommodations. THE HOTELS CAST BEGIN TO EEEP THEM The coming National Encampment of the G. A. K., to be held in Boston in August, promises 'to be one of the largest gatherings of the "old boys" on record, notwithstand ing the tact that the Eebel Death has beea busy among their ranks since they last gathered at Milwaukee. Preparations are being made on all sides for a ceneral turnout and a glorious reunion. The Pennsylvania department headquar ters are fixed at the Quincy House, where Department Commander Joseph F.Dennis ton and his personal staff have secured quar ters, but it is more than likelr that, as in Milwaukee, some public hall will be secured as official headquarters, where the comrades from other States can meet their brethren who bear the Keystone on their caps. Major Dennistonexpectsaverylargerepre sentation Ironi Pennsylvania, as he has been notified of a large number of posts which will attend in a body. From Pittsburg the present indications are that Posts 41, 162 and 128 will be oresent and march in the grand parade, and a verv large contingent oi the ladies of the G. A. K. will attend from this vicinity. HAKD TO GET BEDS.. S. S. Ferguson, of Post 162, stated yester day that the position in Boston is already one or deliberation whether the expected guests can be accommodated. There will be at leat 10.000 veterans to be lodged, without count ing the ladies w ho w ill be present in large num bers, and the visitors who, although soldiers. are not members of the Grand Army, will swell the numbers probably 5.000 more. The large hotels of Boston are rather reluct ant to assign quarters for the GAR-, because their ordinary business is so large and because thev will be crowded to overflowing with guests durinc encampment week. The Verdome, how ever, will te the headquarters of General Alger and staff, and some of the department commanders: also of the President of the Women's Relief Corns. The American House will accommodate several posts, and the Ver monters will make their headquarters at the Tremont House, where they will boom Colonel "VV. H. Veazie for National Commander. The National Encampment itself will bo held in Music HalL Horticultural, Cbickering. Ma son fc Hamlin, Christian Union and other halls have been secured for department headquar ters and reunions. The headquarters of the New England department will oe in Horticul tural HalL The committee on accommoda tions do not expect to establish a camp for any of the veterans. THE THOUSANDS EXPECTED. New" York City will send 6.000 men. and Phil adelphia, that great G. A. R. city, 3,000. New England veterans will come to Boston practi cally en masse. Maine and Connecticut are good for 5,000 men each. New Hampshire and Vermont 5,000 each, and Rhode Island will send her little alL As for the old Bay State herself, she will have not a man less than 15.000 men in line to do escort duty to the 50,0000 veterans from all over the Union on the bright morning of the parade next August. Taking the old ideas uf the field that every bullet has its billet, the Grand Army or any other man who expects to get a bed in Bo-ton during the National Encampment has about the same chance of striking one as he had ol being struck while in active service, when it took the expenditure of tons of English and rebel lead to kill one Union soldier. The arrangements now being made are in the main to live and sleep in the cars, which will be side-tracked for that purpose. The ladies' organizations will nearly all locate themselves on the railroad tracks, and the ports now making arrangements to go to the National Encampment will also secure a habi tation in the Pullman cars while the encamp ment lasts. The Hearing In the Case Against Allecfaenr Began A United Slate Engineer Ex plain. Its Worklnc-Dr. Harris' Cramp Care la ihc Court. The hearing in the case of the United States Government against Allegheny City to condemn property for the Herr's Island dam, was commenced yesterday afternoon before the viewers. The latter are Thomas Bourke, James Atwell and John D. Sharer. United States District Attorney Lyon was present on behalf of the Government, and City Solicitor Elphinstone represented Alle gheny City. The only witness examined was "W.J. Arras, the Government engineer. He testified con cerning the construction or the proposed dam. He said it would be a stationary crib dam and would cause a raise of eight feet above the present stage of water. The plans, however, maybe altered and the dam made a movable one with wickets, so the stage of water could be raised and lowered. The dam would not inter fere with the citv's system of sewerage. If It did affect the sewers that empty into the river above the dam, they conld be continued down the river through the dam and empty below. The amount of ground they need is 15,000 square feet. At the conclusion of Mr. Arras' testimony the hearing was continued till Thursday. A petition, it is stated, will be presented to Alle gheny Council Thursday night asking them to agree to have the viewers' decision in the case hnal and witnout appeal. COMMISSIONER GAMBLE CKAMPED. This Time It Was a Shrewd Easiness Man Who Held Certificate No. 268 la the Everett Pin no Club, And receives one of the finest pianos in the world on payments of 51 per week. Mr. O. D. Glenn, who holds a responsible position in the large drygoods house of Boges & Buhl, Allegheny, gave the Everett Club system a thorough investigation before joining the club. He saw that the club provided a better piano for $350 than he could buy elsewhere for S450, and at the same time allowed members to pay in the way most convenient to themselves, ranging froia SI per week to all cash. The suc cess ot the Everett Club is a strong argu ment in its favor. The pianos are going to the homes of the members with a rush, and while the retail dealers are complaining of dull trade, there is a constant stream of pur chasers at the warerooms of the club man ager.
