1 THE PITTBBURQ- DISPATCH, TUESDAY, AP.RIL 8, 189 a .V SOTAHITOOLOTELT- An Anti-Manvell Yeslry Chosen bj Members of Trinity Church. KO OPPOSITION TO THE TICKET. Feculiar Position of Mr. T. C. Jenkins, TYho Didn't Seek Be-Election. BoSb TALK iBuUr COXSOLIDATIOX. The vestry election yesterday in Trinity P. E. Churcli, resulted in the selection of the old board. It consists of the following gentlemen: H. G. Hale, H. L. Mason, B. Bakewell, A. D. Smith, T. C Jenkins, C. M. Gormly, A. E. W. Painter, J. B. Dun lew. V. H. Singer, S. C. McCandless, E. T. Dravo. R. B. Brown, A. S. M. Morgan and W. K. Blair. The expected music did not materialize, but things are not as lovely as they seem. Mr. T. C. Jenkins, who "is a warm sup porter of Dr. Maxwell, was re-elected. When Mr. Jenkins was seen yesterday he was much surprised at the result, because he had declined to be ajcandidate. Mr. Hale said that the vestry had not been notified by Mr. Jenkins, but the latter stated that he had sent them a note, and he couldn't imagine what had become of it. couldn't be a candidate. "When Mr. Jenkins was asked if he would resign or continue to serve he said he was cot ready to talk bat would ao so in a few days. Continuing he said: I declined to be a candidate forrc-election. I couldn't be a member of a vestry that would call a new pastor. I was satisfied with Mr. ' Maxwell. He was a good financial manager, and under his guidance the parish was prosper ous. As it i the vestry has nut the parish un der a debt ot 15,000 to settle with Mr. Maxwell. I suppose the newvestrv will favor uniting Trinity and St Peter's, but it will be a difficult matter to adjust. I think it is a mistake as both parishes were doing well enough. If" St. Peter's is united with us, some of the people In Trinity will have to give up their pews, and they won't do it without a struggle. There are also some financial considerations to arrange. The fact is I do not approve of this latest move." NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Mr. Henry Q. Hale, who represents the anti Maxwell faction, declined to talk. He said the election bad nothing to do with the question of uniting the churches. Mr. Hale's son. who acted as the judge of the election, was surmised when he heard that Mr. Jenkins bad declined to be a candidate. He insisted that the vestry had not been notified of his resolution. Young Mr.Ha'e is not heart and soul in the scheme to unite the churches, and be admits the difficulties to overcome are formidable Much depends on what kind ot a sale can be made of the St. Peter's property. The election was held from 10 o'clock to 12. and it passed off quietly. Mr. W. R. Blair was elected to succeed John H. Shoenberger, de ceased. The vestry as it stands is anti-Maxwell, and is supposed to favor the combination of the two churches. Mr. Jenkins hopes that the existing troubles will soon die out. He says that he will not be a party to any plan that will keep them alive. THE OTHEB ELECTIONS. The other Episcopal churches of the city also held elections for vestrymen yesterday. In most cases the former boards were re-elected. St. Andrew's chose the following gentlemen: F. R. Brunot J. B. Jackson, William Mulling, J. P. Henderson, E. B. Alsop. A. M. Cavitt, R, M. Work was begun yesterday on the power house of the Duquesne Traction Company at the corner or Fifth avenue and Craig street. Engineers Allen and Tone, who were connected with the Citizens'. and, the Wylie avenue companies, appeared on" the scene yesterday with their instruments and began the work or staking off the lines for the plant. Ground will be broken to.day or to-morrow, and the work of erecting the building and car house will be pushed to completion. Work was also to have been begun on the west end of Forbes street yesterday, but this was postponed on account of a new water main having to be laid. It was thought best to allow the city to lay the water main first, as it would not be necessary to tear up the street after the cars were running. Large piles of Belgian block line both sides or the street between Boyd and Chestnut streets, and when the work is started it will be hurried as rapidly as possi ble.
