' V TO START THE PARK, Chief Bigelow Will Turn Loose on Mrs. Schenley's Gift To-Day. IT WILLBE IN GOOD SHAPE BY JDLT A General Spring Cleaning to be GiTen the City's Streets, AKD PATE EAST END THOROUGHFARES The park business will commence to-day. Chief Bigelow will put a large number of men to woik this morning on the Schenley Park grounds to study dentistry. Their professional experience will commence with the practice of extracting roots. The park's progress will be marked by the disappear ance of stones, leaves and other material which impairs the beauty of the surround in ps, and a perspective different from tbat illustrated by Hogarth will, Chief Bigelow says, greet the eye of the aesthetic Pitts burger within six months. The Chief has not yet perfected the plans for the Schenley Park, which will include the labyrinth, suggested by Tiie Dis patch, possibly a zoological garden, and drives, rustic bridges, grottoes, ponds, nat ural and artificial, and other attractions, calculated to make Central Park, New York, and Fairniount Park, Philadelphia, turn green with envy, without the adven titious aid of spring weather. IN GOOD SHArE BY JULY. By July Chief Bigelow expects that the park will show a very presentable appear ance, but of course it will fake years to make it a model place of recreation, the left lung of Pittsburg nearest to the heart of the Department of Public "Works. The attention of the department is no less directed to the cleanliness of the lower part of the city. On Tuesday night two street sweeping macnines niaae me rounas on Liberty, Fifth avenue and Smithfield street, making the gravel and dirt fly. Last night the spring cleaning was added to by two more sweeping machines. The ma chines are navigated bv accomplished engineers, who threw the mud and gravel upon the sidewalks with the utmost pro fusion. Chief Bigelow said yesterday that all that was needed was a little education in the matter, and he was sure tbat before long the drivers would be able to pile the dirt in symmetrical heaps at just sufficient distances to leave the cross ings clear and keep the gutters from being clogged. He said that a 6hort time ago while in Boston he watched the cultivated bean-nourished drivers plow through thick mushy mud, and although the machines were guarded by canvas hangings, some holes in the sides of the hangings poured out streams of liquid mud upon the just and the unjust, those who were just near enough to catch them and those who were too near to escape. STREETS TTILL BE KEPT CLEAN. He said that to-night there would be six sweepers at work if necessary, as he was de termined that the streets of Pittsburg should be kept clean. The sweeping machines are made of rattan, the brush beiug set diag onally to the line of motion, and can be regulated to the proper degree of pressure by a toot lever. Chief Bigelow also said yesterday that contracts would be advertised within a day or two for the paving of all the streets in the Shadyside district tor which ordinances have been passed, and all other improve ments that have been authorized will be taken up as rapidly as possible and com pleted as quickly as the weather will permit. The repavmg ot Ellsworth avenue will be begun within a very short time, and it is thought the whole length of the street will be repaved. The appropriation for this pur pose only contemplated the paving of about one-half" the Street, hut the Doquesne Trac tion Company having agreed to pave be tween its tracks and one foot on either side, in consideration of the privilege of laying a double track on this street, has made it pos sible for the city to pave the entire lencth of the street on the sum allowed in the ap propriation. The traction company's paving wili be block stone and the city will pave on the sides with asphalt. A Remedy for Indlcestlon. United States Deputy Marshal Barring, yesterday, brought William Casterline from Scranton, Pa., and lodged him in jail here to await trial at the May term of the United States District Court on the charge of rob bing the postoffice at Nicholson, Pa., on the night of February 6. Four men broke into the office and rifled about 50 or 60 tetters. While they were still in the building they were discovered by Dr. Wheeler, of Nicholson, who summoned help. The robbers seeing they were dis covered ran from the building and made for the railroad. They were chased, but fired on their pursuers and escaped by jumping onla coal train going toward Scranton. The United States officers started on a search, and within three weeks had arrested three men believed to have participated in the robbery. The fourth is still at large. Those arrested were Casterline, Jesse Thomas and Allen Sprague. On February 26 Thomas was arrested, and the officers went to search his father's house at Darlton. While tbey were searching the house the prisoner s lather took a kmie ana cut nis own throat from car to ear. Physicians were called in and his life was saved for the time, but he is still in a critical condi tion. Casterline was afterward captured at Scranton and Sprague in Susquehanna countv. The three were given a bearing before United States Commissioner Colburn, at Scranton, and attempted to prove an alibi. The engineer of the engine pushing the coal train on which the robbers escaped from Nicholson, however, identified them as three of the men who jumped on the train. Two of them were his own relatives. They were held, in default of 55,000 bail each, for court. Thomas, owing to his father's condition, was kept in jail at Scran ton. Sprague turned State's evidence and was also kept there, and Casterline was brought here. They will be tried in the May term of court at Pittsburg. MUST GIVE HORSES LAUDANUM.
