Tisit to A'EWSY ITEMS OF EELIG10US WORK What true minister Is there that likes to be introduced to strangers as "our preacher?" "Whatever other title may be chosen he feels that while preaching is a Tery essential part of his life work, still it is far from being the one thing he ought to do. He soon realizes that if he only gives his Sabbath to the peo ple, they will fail to even give that much to his ministrations. The Congregationalist has an article on this subject by the Rev. S. Baker, of Lowell, Mass., which many a minister might read to his benefit, in which he says: "Ihe pas tor was never more needed than now. The minister needs the pastorate for his own sake. He cannot do his best work as student or preacher without the experience ot the pastor. The preacher must know his peo ple, and in order to know them he must see them, and in order to see them he must visit them at their places of toil and in their homes. "The preacher is not a mere lecturer to unfold the truth, but his work is higher. His question must be, how can I so present tuis as to help the peoole in the struggles of the Christian life? Next to the "Word of God. the most important book for the preacher is his parish, and in order to have the benefit of that he must be a pastor. The invisible minister during the week is apt to be both in comprehensible and unhelpful ou Sunday. Six hoars' good work in the study and three hoars' good work" as a pastor each day, help both the preacher's brain and heart. All stndy makes dull preaching; all visiting makes thin preach ing; bnt together they make clear, tender and helpful sermons. -The preacher's influence depends upon whether the people consider hitn a mero jireacher or a sincere sympathizing Christian brother seeking to help them heavenward. Just in proportion as the people realize that the minister is their personal mend and that lie takes them into his heart and holds them with a sincere affection just in that proportion will his spoken words h.ive power over their souls. The office of the preacher has lost much of its power becauso too many ministers are merelj official in their methods. It has been the minister and not the brother who has called upon the people. It is well that the mere dignity of the office has lost its influence, but the manly, unselfish, brotherly pastor has lost none of his; he is loieu and honored as much now as ever. hen the people feel that the minister has come not only to preach, and lu a patronizing way visit them, but rather as one who enjoys their joys and shares their sor rows, then his preaching may be plain and simple, but his influence will be increasingly great. It is sad to hear a minister speak of paroch ial calling as -hard work.' a "kind of drudgery,' ullicu they must do.' When the pastor feels thus, the people w ill see it ana he is no longer a pastor to them. A minister must be glad to see his people; it must be real gladness. Equally unwise is the remark that 'this running round among the people is a waste of time.' When a minister is so small a man, so cold a man, that the call at the home does not do him good, then ho would better resign. 'Let the pastor be impartial, not yielding to the delightful temptation of calling upon a few select aud leading famihts; rather let the pillars' take care ot themselves, aud let the pastor shepherd the uncertain ones. Be a pastor of the men as well as of the women. The pastor who thus ministers to the people is blessed more than he blesses. The peonle need shepherding.' " ... Lord, sneak to me, that 1 may speak In llfng echoes of '1 hv tone; As lliou hast sought so let ine se- k lay erring children, lost and lone. t) lead me, Lord, that I may lead The wandering and the wavering feet; O feed me, Lord, that 1 may feed Thy hungering ones with manna sweet. O leach me. Lord, that I may teach The precious things 'Ihou dostlmpart: And wins my words, that thev may reach The hidden depths of many a heart. O Eire Thine own sweet rest to me 'iliat I niaj speak with southing power A word in season, as Irom Thee To weary ones In needful hour. Church Notes. Jersey City Tresbytery favors revision.
