THE PITTSBTJUG- DISPATCH, FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1890. THE CITY'S GROWTH Amazed Geo. T. Myers, Who Eetnrned After an Absence of 31 Tears. KOW AN OEEGOK SALMON PACEER. The Jojs ani Sorrows of Fishermen on the Columbia Kiver. 1XP0RTS PEOM THE PACIFIC COAST Mr. Georf;e T. Myers and wife, of Port land, Ore., who have been spending the last week at the Raquesne, left Pittsburg Tester Jay for the Hast. Mr. Myers is an old resi dent of the town, haying struck West 31 rears ago, after coming to the conclusion that the city had reached its full measure of growth. H wanted to pet into a country where there was more energy and enterprise. His surprise, therefore, when he returned to the city was great, and its marvelous devel opment in 31 years amazed him. He says he feels like Eip Van "Winkle did when he awoke from his long sleep. At first he didn't know the city at ell, but as he rubbed his. eyes and looked around he here and there found an old landmark that re minded him of the city of 30 years ago. G'EEAT BUSINESS ENERGY". "Pittsburgers'said he yesterday, at the Duquesne, "'scarcely realize how much the citv has grown. Tts buildings and business will compare favorably with older cities. The town and spirit of the people remind me of San Francisco. In the matter of street car lines you are away ahead of many places. I can scarcely realize the change." Mr. JlYers is the "son of the late Jacob "Mers, of" the firm of Myers & Hunter, and a nephew of the late "William Gormley He still finds many of his old boyhood friends here. "When Mr. Myers went "West he located in Oregon, and engaged in salmon p.cking. He now has large canneries on the Columbia river and Puget Sound. In chatting about the business yesterday, he said: BE3I-AKKABLE GEOAVTH. "Salmon fishing and packing has grown to be an extensive business along the Pacific coat Last Tear our exports from Oregon amounted to iU, 000,000, and the pack tor the com from San Francisco to Alaska was 1,000,000 salmon. "The catches of the finnv tribe in the Pugtt Sound and the Columbia river have been so large that the fish are becoming scarcer and more costly. "We are now by hatcheries an d artificial methods of incuba tion trying to keep ud the yearly supply. At least we hone to offset some of the heavy hauls made. This year the output will not he more than "half a "pack. When I left the fishermen on the Columbia river were out on a strike, and 1 expect it will interfere with the trade. I don't believe the canners will yield to their demands. "The salmon is a beautiful fish.and catch ing tliem is es.citing sport. In the Colum bia river thev weigh on an average 23 pounds, but I have seen some that tipped the scales at SO pounds. The Puget Sound salmon weighs lrom 8 to 10 pounds, and is a drver fih. He is not so popular now as his juicier companion in the river, but tbe de mand tor the Puget Souud fish is increasing rapidly. EAST TO CATCH. "The habits of the salmon make them easy to catch. They never retreat, and when they come down the river in the spring it is with a steady advan '. "We fish with traps, seines and nets. These are placed in the water, and arranged in such a way as to entangle the advancing fish. They get into the coils so tightly tha., they can't get out, and as they won t go back they are drawn out by the"fiherraen and canned for the great pub lic's benefit. The fishermen on tbe river prefer muddy water, because the salmon is very intelligent and gamey, and if they could see the nets many oi them would avoid them. Traps and seines are relied on in the Columbia river to produce the best results. "Fishing in Puget Sound is ilso glorions sport. The water is so clear and transparent that I have often counted pebbles at a depth ot 25 feet when the light was shaded by the boat. You can see the fish darting around in the water, and once, when I caught 7,000 fish in one haul, the largest I ever made, I could see the salmon beneath me 15 feet deep. The water is peculiar in that it is phosphorescent. "When the light shines on it it glistens like gold, and reminds one of the glow of firewood at night. In the sound we use the nets and seines exclusively. They are fastened to skiffs, and drawn slowly through the water. I think there are now about 40 canneries along the Co lumbia river, and they employ at least 2,400 men." Mill MAKE A CHANGE. A New Element In ilic Discordancy Between Mayor nnd Chief. The fight which has been commenced be tween Chief Elliott and the Mayor-elect will, it is probable, make a change in the Department of Awards. The Mayor-elect is regarded by a good many of the officials as making war, to some extent, upon the con stituents who made him, and there will be, according to the indications, a very pretty fight. The probabilities are that the Depart ment of Awards will be changed before long so as to make an odd number in the mem bership, as it is claimed should have been done on tbe organization of the department The new man to go in is not yet determined on, and whether the Mayor withdraws or a new member is introduced, is an open ques tion. The Controller, who was originally in tended to be a member of the Department of Awards, is in the position to pass upon contracts after he had, as a member of the department, voted upon the award, and consequently conscientiously declined a membership. The question now is whether the Mayor will be dropped, or who will be added to the Award Department to make tbe odd number and make it even with the citizens wuo are against the job question, if any snch can be found outside of those who have received contracts. Friday nnd Saturday "We hold our great sale of men's fine suits and spring overcoats at S10 each. All our new spring goods, aie placed on our counters ready for sale, and to introduce our styles and to show the public how very cheap they can buy a suit or overcoat at our store we offer a choice of our grand assortment at 810. "We want to say right here that the garments we sell at 10 are the finest sold for that price in the city; JIG. 518 and even 20 is the price elsewhere. Give us a call to-day. P. C. C. C, cor. Projectors of tltr Pittsburg """ Virginia Lino to Meet Here Fiizbusu " Coming Richness or tho Appalachian Ranee In Coal and Iron A Southern Outlet. John K. Proctor, the State Geologist of Kentucky, is at the Anderson Hotel. To day be expects to have a conference with ex-Governor Fitzhugh Lee and other South ern gentlemen interested in the projected Pittsburg and Virginia Railroad. This road is intended to run from this city to Lexing ton, where it will connect with the Chesa peake and Ohio line running through the Mississippi lino. Mr. Proctor said he didn't know anything about tbe financial backing of the" new road, but he had every reason to believe that it would be built. The B. & O. is already dickering to secure a long lease on the line, and some of the officials oi this road will be present at the meeting. . . . Mr. Proctor has just come from Virginia, where he was looking up the country through which the road will run. In a short chat last evening he said: "I regard the Appalachian range of mountains as the richest in the country in iron ore and coal. If this road is built it will open up to Pittsburgers a shorter route to the South for both freight and passengers. Pittsburg needs iron ore, and the South has it. I am very much pleased with the display of Southern eiiterpri&e and energy. Hitherto our people have invested their money in .Northern cities.but they are beginning to see that wealth lies at their own doors, and they are bringing back their money, and uoing it to develop local Industrie's." A full account of the organization of the new road was given in the telegraphic columns of this paper a few weeks a so. INSPECTING ELEC1RIC K0ADS. Southern Capitalists Getting a Few Pointers in l'lttsbnrc Mr. Tj. Atwood, an electric engineer of Philadelphia, A. H. Eutherford, of Balti more, and A.F. Johnston, of Richmond, are at the Duquesne. The last two named gentlemen are members of the Southside Land and Improvement Company, of Manchester, a town opposite Richmond, and they propose to build an electric road to develop the territory. They came to Pittsburg with Mr. Atwood, anil spent the day in inspecting the Second avenue and Pleasant Valley roads. Both men were well pleased with what they saw. They firmly believe, as do many others, that electricity is the future motive power. Mr. Atwood claims that he has invented something that renders overhead wires perfectly safe, but he wouldn't tell what it was. He believes in large cities the wires should be put underground. PEEPAK1NG TOR THE CENSUS. Dr. Denny Selccilinc tho Enumerators for tbe Mnth District. Dr. "William Denny, one of the census supervisors of the Ninth district, was at the Anderson Hotel yesterday. He met there Representatives J. K. Billingsly. of Cali fornia, and J. B. Donaldson, of Canons burg, for the purpose of naming the enumerators who wil. canvass the territory. The doctor consu ted with a number of local politicians, bu. when he returned to his home early last evening he was unable to make any definite statement. About 500 men are needed to do the work properly, and the best persons will be selected under the circumstances. These men should have been appointed long ago, but owing to politi cal differences the supervisor was not even named until a late date. The counties comprised in the doctor's district are Beaver, "Washington, Fayette and Greene. HEE MOTHER IS IN JAIL. A Homeless Little Girl for tho llumane Society to Take Cure Of. On Tuesday last a disorderly house kept by Mrs. Mary Conner, on Friendship ave nue, Seventeenth ward, was raided by the police, and Mrs. Conner, a little 11-year-old daughter and two young men were arrested. At the hearing on the following morning the first named and the two latter were given ten days each to jail, but the little girl was lelt in charge of the police. It has been learned since that she has been in tbe care of the Humane Society twice, and as the police cannot retain her any longer, either that society or the Anti Cruelty will be asked to take charge of her to-day. THE WIFE HAD SKIPPED, A Woman Prefers Flight ton Trial for Dent ing Her Husband. James Sheridan, a resident of Yellow Row, came to Central station yesterday bleeding profusely from a half dozen ugly gashes on the head which he said had been inflicted by his wife with a heavy piker. Sheridan's injuries were so serious that Dr. Moyer was called to dress the wounds.and a couple of officers were sent to the Yellow Row to arrest Mrs. Sheridan. She had evi dently apprehended the visit, however, and when the officers arrived they found the blinds drawn, the house securely locked, and Mrs. Sheridan gone, with nearly all her peisonal effects. She could not be located all day. J; Sheridan was sent home last evening, and will enter information against his wife. A COUPLE OF CROSS SUITS. epcnli-Easy Cases Instituted at a Very Impolitic Time. According to some informations made yesterday before Alderman McKenna, the Kabelinsk' and Levy families have been experiencing a very lively time. Mrs. E. Levy charges that the Kabelinskis operate a speafc-easy at No. 1244 Penn avenue, and made an information against the head of the household for selling liquor without license. An intormation was also entered against Sarah Kabelinski for assault, the prosecu trix alleging that the defendant struck her across the shoulders with a stick. In return Kabelinski sued Mrs. Levy for surety of the peace, alleging that she threat ened to shoot him with a revolver, and be lieves she intended to do so. Want Smokeless Fnrnnces.
