THE PITTSBURG " DISPATCH, " THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 1890. 3 SHIRTS FOR A CENT. Chinamen Say They Will Meet the Trust Kates and Go Lower. IF ATTACKED THEY WILL FIGHT. Amalgamated lien Ssj Ther Will Shut Down All of Oliver's Hills. LABOfi ITEMS FROM MAKI SOURCES There was some excitement yesterday afternoon in the Chinese laundry circles owing to the report that the liunelrymen in New York State and two or three others had gone into an organization to break the Chinese laundry business up by cutting prices. Hop "Wing, one of the alaiond-eyed washboard rubbers on Grant street, was in terviewed last night by a DISPATCH re porter. The substance of his interview, as near as the reporter could translate it, was as follows: "I don't care what they make the prices on laundry work, because I can work as low as any of them, ana if they come-down to 3 cents for a shirt I will meet the reduction. I can make it so small that the American laundries won't know where they stand." BELIEVED IS INGEESOLL. Hop Win; was the enunciator of the fore going principles, and he was very chary of talking for publication. Of course his bap tismal appellation, be said, a, although strictly orthodox from a Confncius point of view, he was somewhat of an Ingersollian Chinaman. He neither believed in eternal damnation, infant I aptism cor shirts washed at S cents each. The question of the combined reduction in lauudrj prices in opposition to Chineso labor, as shown in yesterday's Dis patch, was talked of very freely in Chinese circles last night. In Gno Wing bing's store on Second avenue, the usual reply nas received that the questioos ere not understood, and the talk of the princi pal as well as the booKkeeoer, as the former made a perpendicular line of hieroglyphics, and the latter cashed out the sheets of fantan wherein the attendant was a winner. WILL COME DOWN TO OSE CEKT. Gno Wing Sing did not know anything about the laundrj fight, and said he did no: want to study it He said- '"Our people can wash shins fori cent a piece if accessary, and we can live." "What will jou live on" "That is all right. Yon can say rats or chickens, and we eat more of the latter than the former. I have no objection to telling you how we stand on the laundry or any other busi ness. When we get enough money wo will go to China and live there until we die. Ihere are others of us who stay in the United States, but when w e do it is tor "cash." " The general opinion among the Chinese was that thev would meet any cut rates bj cutting them still lower, if it were necessary. They cay that if shirts are brought aown to 3 cents bv the American laundries, they will bring them still Inner. The cae now shows that the Chinaman is going to get knocked out in favor of the ahvman, unless he meets the rates, which it is rather difficult to do. THE STRIKE SANCTIONED. President YVcIhe 'npporls It and Other Itlllla Mn y Mint Dcvrn. The stnke at Oliver Bros. Phillips South Tenth street mill, involving nearly 1,000 men, which was ordered jesterday, has been sanctioned by the Amalgamated Association. The strike originated nearly tw weeks ago. The full particulars of thetrouMo were pub lished exclusively in The Dispatch on the 8ih in't The point of disagreement was said to be the discharge of a member of the Mill Committee named EngeL The men claimed that it was Superintendent Smith's tention to discharge all ot the me 1 and replace them with boys. The Mill Committer demanded Engel's rein statement, and they gave the firm notice that unless their demands were granted a strike would be ordered. It is also said that the Amalgamated As-ociation is opposing the in troduction of a new system of working bolt factories, byhanngoneman to operate more than one machine ana thus cheapen the cost of production. The Amalgamated Association men claim thattheSouth Side strike may lead to the clos ing down of all the other Oliver mills in the two cities. Both sides are taking a determined stand, and it is likely that the strike will be bitterlv contested. Mr. D. B. Oln er.of the firm, gave ont a state ment jesterday for publication, in which he said thev had been notified by a committee that unless Engel was taken back there should be no more work alter last night. "Kngel," he said, "was discharged for incompetency. He took 500 pounds of high class material to make an order of bolts that weighed, when finished, less than 140 pounds, and what he did make was not bt to send out." Mr. Oliver claims his firm has to compete with factories where one roan runs six machines, and that a good man can run a number of bolt machines as rapidly as a nailer can operate a number of nail ma chines. The custom of running multiple ma chines was established in their factory long before the bolt workers joined the Amalga mated Association.. PIPE MANUFACTURERS COMING. The National Aiaoclntion Will Meet In Thli City Next Week. The Wrought Iron Pipe Manufacturers' As sociation of the United States will hold a meet ing in this city next week. It will be one of the most important meetings held for some time. There will be about 35 delegates herefrom various parts of the country and they will be tho guests of the Duquesne Club while they are in the city. The meeting will be in session three davs and Fnnie important measures are to be discussed. Tuere are some irregularities in the present scale of prices which will be straightened out, and other matters will be attended to. The following meeting will be held at Middletowu, Pa where tho delegates will be the guests of James W. Young. Presi dent of the American Tube and Iron Company. PRESIDENT SMITH DOME. The Scarcity or Soda Ash Responsible for llio Advance In Glass. President William Smith, of the Flint Glass Workers' Association, arrived home from Philadelphia yesterday. He was East looking after some matters pertainiug to tho associa tionv While in Philadelphia be met H. Sellers McKee. The latter gentleman deplored the scarcity of soda ash and said something should be done immediately. President Smith thinks the scarcity of the various chemicals used in the manufacture of glass a grave matter just at this time. Tho Greensburg Gliss Companv, recently of Brill iant. O., is said to have closed down on that ac count, and it is also responsible for the present advance in glass. The manufacturers are at the mercv of tbe circumstance by the fact that nearly all of the contracts for chemicals are based on all sorts of conditions and contin gencies. THE PHILADELPHIA'S ELEPHANT. A Quarter of a million Feet of Unserviceable Gas Pipe. The Philadelphia Company hag suddenly found itself in possession of about 250,000 feet of pipe for which it has no use. It ranges in size from 5 to 12 inches. It is mostly wrought iron, and has been in servlco from two to three years as a part of the high pressure system, but it has been rendered unavailable for further use owing to the com pletion of the new low-pressure line. The pipe is all to be lifted and offered for sale. AN IRON MILL FOR THE WEST. 2IX. M. Garland Will boon Erect s Plant In Ibe Golden Stair. M. M. Garland, of tbe Southside, will shortly movo to California, where, it is said, be is con templating the erection of an iron mill. Mr. Garland is an ex-Councilman from the Thirty-nrst ward, and has been in the iron busi ness lor some years. It is not decided what amount of money will be invested in tbe new plant.
