THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY, MARCH 10, 1890. NO "HEAVIER WOMAN Sow in Pittsburg Than a Yonnjr Lady AVho Was Itaried Yesterday. SHE WEIGHED JUST 428 POUNDS, And Her Coffin Was 25 Inches Across, In side Measurement. A BUEDE.V FOR SIX PALLBEARERS. The funeral of Miss Lizzie Kramer, of Franklin street, took place yesterday after noon at 2 o'clock, from the residence of her brother, Prank H. Kramer, 2fo. 33 Pasture street The young lady was the heaviest person living in the Seventh ward, and Jirobabl v the heaviest woman living in Pitts burg. Her weight was 428 pounds. The Kramer family is one of the best known on the hill, where they have lived for many years. The lather, John Henry Kranier, keeps a grocery store at No. 24 Franklin street, corner of Congress. He lus five sons, Frank H., Charles C, Win. F., Henry and Alexander Kramer. There were two daughters, the surviving daughter being Sirs. Bakehouse, of licltzhoover. The younger children, Alexander and Lizzie, live with their parents on Franklin street. Three of the sons, who are married, Ine about two blocks away, in houses adjoining, on Pasture street. Charles Kramer has been for several years a member of the police force. Since Chief Brown took charge cf the department, Mr Kramer has been a cor ner man, his present station being Fifth avenue and Wood street. "William is con nected with the Fire Bureau. Charles has recently been the victim of unusual afilie etion by the death of relat.es. ALL THE TAMILY LARGE. All the members of the family are of heavy build, including father and mother, but Miss Lizzie was larger than any two o her stalwart brotheis. She was only 2S years old. From youth she was disposed to excessive corpulence. As a school girl. when on the streets she attracted general at tention. During her later years she was seen out very seldom. Her weight became so great that she did not care to walk far, and she did not like to be stared at by peo ple on the streets. She therefore did not go more than two or three blocks from home, and that far rarely. She might visit a near neighbor or go to some adjacent store for her mother. She was a great favorite with those who knew her in the immediate vicinity of her nome, and her death has elicited many expressions of sorrow. Her weight was a burden to her. 'Within the fcst three or four years she was con- tinnaily trying medicines and miscellaneous T nostrums to reduce her flesh, but all was useless. Every new anti-fat compound found in her a purchaser. Still, che en joyed fairly good health, and until a week ago she helped her mother in all the house work. A SEMES OF MISFOBTtrX ES. When the present wintry weather set in Miss Kramer caught a bad cold, which de veloped into pneumonia. She was not confined to bed until last Thursdav. On February 13, the wife of Officer Kramer died, and was buried three weeks ago yes terday. Last Wednesday, Officer Kramer's wife's grandmother died in St. Clair town ship, and he went Thursday to attend her funeral. When he left home his sister was not seriously ill. He never again saw her alive. She died suddenly, at 7 o'clock Fridav evening, and the first notice he re ceived was the reading of her death in the newspaper, Saturday morning. The bodr of the deceased was prepared for burial by L. Bcinhau-r & Soa. The coffin was 5 teet 9 inches long, and 25 inches across on the inside. It was, of course, m de specially; and was the widest coffin ever made by Bcinhauer. The elder Kramers live on the second floor, ove'r their store, and it was thought to be too difficult and slow a task to carry the coffin do n the stairway at the time of the funeral. Therefore, on Saturday evening, the remains were removed bv a number of strong men, to the iiouse of Frank Kramer, on Pasture street. There the funeral serv ices were held yesterday afternoon. COVERED 'WITH FLOWERS. There was t. large attendance of neighbors nnd friends. The great coffin was covered with beautiful flowers. A touching funeral oration was tpoken bv Iter. F. A. Ahner, the pastor of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on High street, to which the family belongs. The exercises were in German. It was all that six stalwart pallbearers, assisted by Mr. Beinhauer, could do to lift tne coffin into the hearse. The remains were followed to the German Cemetery, at Miners ville, by a long line of carriages. A MISLEADING BULLETIN, XIow Innocent People Who Wanted a Toboc Were Fooled on Sunday. The owner of a cigar store on the lower end of Fifth avenue was yesterday the cause of no little grief to a number of young people. He forgot to take in a bulle tin which adorned the front portion of his place Saturday, and which bore the an nouncement. ; KECBEATIOX PAEK , Toboggan Slide : Open To-Dat. As people passed the place they stopped and gazed. Some wondered it the slide was really in operation, and if so, if Captain Wishart kuew anything about it. Others did not stop to argue the question. They had been longing lor a "slide" all winter, and without ever imagining the possibility of a mistake, made a B line foi the park. One young man walked his girl half way to Soho, on Forbes street, to get their toboggan suits. What was their disappointment when they arrived at Recreation Park, to find it closed. They spent the remainder of the evening looking for the owner of the cigar store. CAUGHT THE GKIPP. TIcllmi of the Pally Matinee at the Central Pi I ice Mnllon. Tnere was a solitary sentence to the work house among Magistrate Gripp's judgments at Central station yesterday morning. Will iam Butts was the victim, his cr'me con sisting of being caught in the act of break ing the glass out of a vestibule at No. 89 Second avenue. Thomas Fleming had been arresfod for breaking up a lot of .goods in the Boston novelty store, but he was released upon pay ment of the damage done. Pat Holmes was in Matt Weiss' saloon Saturday' nipbt, and after he went out a fancy cigar lighter, a lamp and a number of drinking glasses were missing. Holmes was suspected, arrested and the stolen goods were lonnd on him. He was fined 25 and costs, which he paid. Ten disorderlies and six drunks were given the usual light fines and sentences. In 1SJS nnd 1SS9 The Grip nnd tho Ep'zootlc. Mr. Samuel Robinson, of Robinson Brothers, devotes a portion of his time to the study of epidemics and though he does not profess to have discovered the causes of them, he has learned considerable respect ing the phenomena generally. Years ago he traced the coarse of several and had the satisfaction of finding something about them, if not their causes and his deductions do not bear out the theory of some, that they are carried by winds, for he finds that thev travel steadily, at times, right in the teeth of the gale. But the path may be traced eTen by one who does not profess to be a pathologist. Mr. Robinson states that the first cases or influenza, break-bone fever, dengue or dandy, or whatever you see fit to call it. that scourged the equine population in 1872 were reported in Newfoundland. The disease was noted a lew days later in Bos ton, then in New York, and then it took a wide swath, covering the greater part of the United States in its course, and finally dis appeared, so far at least as reports were had, at the end of the peninsula of Lower Cali fornia. It seems to have lost itself between there and Australia, probably did for want ot food. The epizootic traveled all this !istanoe mainly against the wind, so it was not carried by it. Mr. Robinson also calls attention to the fact that the cholera travels westward nnd not eastward from its nursery in India. Though one might suppose the overcrowded and filthy Chinese would furnish a fat field lor its ravages, China is almost exempt. It was once thought to follow the track of travel, and at that time some supposed that China's immunity was due to the tact that she had little communication with the world, but since China has fallen into the path of travel and commerce it is noted that she still enjoys immunity. Though travel ers do spread both cholera and yellow fever, or at least assist in spreading them, yet the former seems to drift steadily from the nur sery in one direction, and becomes epidemic where conditions are favorable along that line sort of effloresces. It is possible that some day the track of epidemics may be traced as storms now are, and people of means may, by aid of rail ways, easily get out of the way for the time being. Mr. Robinson also notes that while in this and most other countries the late influenza, from which some people are still suffering, the respiratory organs were attacked, John Bull's stomach was more affected than his lungs. For aught anv one knows to the contrary absolutely knows, at least this winter's epidemic and the epizootic of 1872 may both have had their rise in the frozen ocean north of the mouth of the Lena. C0RA0P0LIS IN PERIL. A Locomotive Engineer nnd Ilia Whistle Sare the Village from n, Scorching. A locomotive engineer on the Pittsburg and Lake Erie Railway saved a disastrous conflagration in Coraopolis early Friday Friday morning. He noticed too much fire in the shoe store of G. W. J. McAdams, second door from the railway station and opening his whistle Talve let her scieam until the sleepy citizens for half a mile round thought Gabriel had c tiled on them. Enough of them wakened in time to ex tinguish the flames before mnch damage had been done. It was ascertained that the ga pressure had become so strong that the flames over leaped tbeir appointed bounds. Had the fire gotten a good start at least four buildings would have been consumed and much more of the village might have gone up in smoke. The fire has rejuvenated the water works boom. A TROUBLESOME SALOON. Policemen Suspended for Tliclr Action ntn Penn Avcnno Jjtqnor Den. Policemen Siuger and Rodgers, connected with the Twelfth ward police station, were yesterday suspended from duty by Inspector McAleese, for neglect of duty. During a fight which occurred Saturday night in the saloon kept by Hugh Foster, at 'No. 1603 Penn avenue, George Lewis, a colored looker-on, was badly cut by being hit in the face with a beer glass thrown by one of the fighters. The two policemen arrested the man who threw the glass, but on Foster's supplication they let the fellow go. Lieutenant Teeters notified the Inspector, and the suspension followed at once. The Inspctor says that Foster's place has been a troublesome one. Officer Rodgers was in jured in trying to stop a fight there on Feb ruary 17. The Department of Public Safety will protest against the renewal of Foster's saloon license. Cheap Rates to tho West VI n !. Louis nnd tho MI.ourl Pacific Rr.
