THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1890. 3 TOUCHED DP LIYELY. An Attack on Revisionists of the - Westminster Confession. .EEV. W. S. WILLIAMS ON VANITY. A: Sermon or Two on the Calamity at the Rational Capital. OTEK TOPICS T8EATED BI PEEACHEKS At Christ TJniversalist Church, in 17. V. L. Hall, last night, Bev. "W. S. "Williams, the pastor, preached on the subject of "Our selves and Other People," "taking lor his text, Romans xii:3 "For I say to every man that is anions; you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, as God hjth dealt to every man the measure of faith." The preacher began his discourse by tquchinc somewhat ungently the recent ses sion of Presbyterians in 2ew York. The principal object of that session, he remarked, was the revision of the Calvinistic creed. The substance of the ob jections made by those progressive, or rather self-styled progressive, Presbyterians, was that their creed lacks any suggestion of the fact that God is a loving God. The mem bers of that Presbytery plumed themselves on having discovered that God is lovel They considered themselves as very superior to ordinary men because they thought they had discovered that Eo doubt it was a good thing to see the ideas of men advance even at a snail's pace. But it was also striking and amusiug.to a decree, that such persons should claim to have "discovered" that God is love. Did not a nobler and a grander people although, perhaps a people not so ostentatious discover that fact over 100 years ago? As if no one had ever known that God was love before! As if God, continued the speaker, had never been love before, but had become so for the purpose of being discovered by these Presbyterians. As though He were not the father the supreme dispenser of all lovel Members of that 2Jew York Presbytery must have thought most loftily of themselves. Now the apostle told us that a man must not think higher of himself than be ought to think. This, of course, should not prevent a man from forming a just notion of himself, but we are not to make ideal pictures to soothe our vanity. Then, too, this did not prevent a. man from making an ideal of what, by grace, he might become, and striv ing to obtain that ideal. A man was not what he thought himself. Neither was he what others thought him. But it would do everyone good it some power would give them the "giftie" that Burns speaks ot. The sin of overestimating ourselves was a grievous sic, and should be watchfully avoided. GOD'S HAND IN BEREAVEMENT. Rev. Kennedy Looks Upon ihe National Affliction r a Necessity. Bev. David S. Kennedy, of the Pint Presbyterian Church, Allegheny, preached yesterday morning on the subject: "God's Unseen Hand in Bereavement." As an in troduction to the sermon, which related par ticularly to Jacob's bereavement, Mr. Kennedy referred to the dark sorrow which settled over the National Capital during the past week and to which the attention of the whole country lias been directed. Mr. Kennedy regards afflictions as a necessity. He said: "God does not send them as a judgment for condemnation, but as a chastisement for the correction of his people. He never strikes a blow save when it is necessary for the good ol ins people, we are permitted to look behind the scenes and see God's hand in the bereavement of others. "We cannot see that hidden hand in our own. Bu . when at last wo look back over these afflictions we shall see that they have worked out for good. It is a kind mercy that God keeps his course secret. We would not know how to use the light if we had it Living trouble is worse than dead trouble." BEV. PEUGH'S DISCOVERIES. He Don Not Believe That Mart Was Created to be Dnmned. Bev. Prugh, of the Grace Beformed Church, delivered a Tery interesting sermon last evening. His subject gave him an ex cellent opportunity for argument He took the position that one could make the Scriptures read any way he had a mind to, if he started out to do so, but it was get tiug to be that all men would not accept any reading but the correct one. The soul-harrowing pictures of the Puritans and St Au gustine did more than anything else todrive men away from God. Men would not believe that the God who created man, and loved him, would hold him up a blaspheming, cursing, shrieking wretch over a bottomless pit of fire. s The Bible, said the speaker, was a series of pictures, and no man had a right to take metaphors and dogmatize them. There was just as much proof in the Scriptures that all men would be saved as that most of them would be damned. THROUGH THE H0LI LAXD. Dr. Leak Frenches a Farewell Sermon to Hl Concreg-ntlon "The Lord watch between me and thee, while we are absent one from another," was the text from which Bev. T. J. Leak, D. D., of. the- North Avenue (Allegheny) M. E. Church, preached yesterday morning. Dr. Leak has secured a leave of absence from his congregation for three months to go on a trip with a party of 40 or SO other ministers through the Holy Land. Bev. "W. H. Pearce, D. D., Bev. J. A. Ballantyne and Findlsy EL Torrens, of this city, will leave Tuesday evening for New York, wliere they will be met by the other ministers from va rious parts of the country. On Wednesday the party will separate, part of them sailing on the Nordlacd for Autwerp. and the others on the Lahn for Southampton. They will meet at Naples and journey together over to Egypt and will camp for 30 days in Palestine. They will return about the middle of May. THE WASHINGTON CALAMITY. Iter. David McAllister Regards It a a Warning to tbe Nation. Bev. David McAllister, of the Eighth Street Beformed Preshvterian Church, preached yesterday morning on "The "Wash ington Calamity A Call lor National Re pentance." Mr. McAllister said that the sad visitation had not been made on Secre tary Tracy' family because of their promi nence in tbe nation, or that there had been any greater evil in their lives than in any otbers. The great lesson to be taken from the acci dent is the uncertainty of lite. These afflic tions may come on any, even the humblest in life, and it behooves all to be ready to face them. LOCAL PREACHERS ABROAD. ministers of Local Chnrcues Who are VUIt ln( or Gains Elsewhere. Bev. James G. Townsend preached at the Unitarian Church, on Smithfield street, on "Character." There will be no service there' next Sunday forenoon, as Bev. Mr. Townsend and his wife departed atl o'clock for Chicago, where they will remain lor about ten days. Bev. E. P. Cowan, of the Third Presby terian Church of Pittsburg, is in New York for a few days. Bev. T. J. Leak, of the North Avenue M. E. Church, will depart for his visit to the Holy Land to-morrow. V WITHOUT THE FOLD. A Washtncton Prencber Spenka on tbe Sub ject of Ihe Unsaved. Taking for his text, I Cor. vi3, "But them that are without, God judgetb," Bev. Dr. J. D. Moffatt, of "Washington, Pa., preached an eloquent sermon at the Third Presbyterian Church last evening. Dr. Moffatt first briefly considered the unsaved, who and what they are; he then proceeded to show why I they are without the fold, and discussed the question of the danger attend ing their remaining out. Finally, the speaker set forth the best means ol gaining the lost ones again for the lold. DEDICATED TO THE LORD. Opening of the New Presbyterian Church Near tbe Driving Fark Great Interest In the Proceedings History of the Bnild lns. The new Presbyterian church on Home wood avenue was yesterday formally turned over to the congregation. Although no special services marked the occasion still great interest was shown in the proceedings by a very large attendance both of the regu lar worshipers of the congregation and visi tors who came to congratulate them upon the fulfillment of their -work. The services were opened with prayer, and after a hymn by the choir Bev. TV. J. Chalfant of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church gave a brief history of the new church. The totol cost of the lot and building was $4,311, of which $3,201 has been paid, leaving only the lotto be paid for. The money was raised partly by the congregation and the congre gations of other churches,. The dedicatory praver was delivered by Bev. Dr. Shrom. of the Fourth Presby terian Church, after which short addresses were made by Dr. H. T. McClelland, of the "Western Theological Seminary; Bev. S. H. Morris, of "Wilkinsburg, and J. H. Jen nings, Esq. The tenor ot the remarks were of a congratulatory order, and urging the people to be steadfast in their Christianity. George "Wagner sang a very pretty solo, "In the Secret of His Presence. The new church is a frame structure, and is neatly and comfortably iurnished. The pulpit will be filled by the Presbytery, no pastor having yet been called. WILL OPEN ON WEDNESDAT. Father Sheedy's Krw School Now Bendy to be Dedicated. The new parochial school connected with St Mary of Mercy Church will be dedicated and opened "Wednesday. It will be one of the greatest events in Catholic circles in this city for years. The ceremonies will begin at 4 o'clock in the afternoon by the blessing of the building by Father Sheedy. After this the dedication exercises proper will take place. The school children will he present and sing appropriate hymns. A beautiful silk flag will be presented to the school by N. H. Brady, tbe well-known G. A. B representative. As the flag is raised to the top of the building and unfurled the school children will sing national airs. In the evening the building will be thrown open for the inspection of the pub lic. An entertainment will be given in the hall, at which Bishop Phelan will preside. He will also probably make an address, fol lowed by short speeches from prominent citizens. A musical and dramatic enter tainment will wind up the festivities. A banquet will be served for the visitors. The admission will be by card. At the several masses yesterday Father Sheedy read a statement of the finances connected with the erection of the school. The build ing cost $23,000, with tbe ground. The total receipts so far are $9,048. Of this amount $3,200 was contributed by Dersons not connected with the church. Js early one-half of them are Protestants. Invitations have been extended to Gov ernor Beaver, Congressman Dalzell, Car dinal Gibbons, Archbishop Byan and other prominent persons. Local officials and dig nitaries will also be present BATHER A DARK DEED. Serlons Assanlt by Two Colored Rlvermen Upon a Third. A colored man was found by Officer "W. P. Smith, about 4 a. M. yesterday, lying on the sidewalk on Market, near "Water street, unconscions and bleeding profusely. The officer set to work, and soon got the man brought back to consciousness sufficiently to tell what had occurred. ' He said he was Dan Hopkins, fireman on the tow boat Fulton. He had started out with "Walter and Henry Arnold, also col ored firemen on the same boat, and after putting in the greater part ot the night in drinking they started to return. On the way the two Arnolds cot offended at Hop kins, and assaulted him with handvbillies, leaving him where the officer found him. the officer went to the boat and arrested the Arnolds, though one of them assaulted him with a hammer before he managed to get the nippers on him. Magistrate Gripp gave each of the Ar nolds 90 days to the work house. Hopkins is not seriously hurt DIED AT THE HOME. Miss Zllzabeth Arthur, an Inmate From Meubrnvlllr, Passes Awny.
