SHEARERS WILLKOT AYASHFLEECE Wasliinjton County Sheep Said to le Hot " of an Inferior Breed. A BANQUET C05CLUDES THE MEETING The annual meeting of the National De laine Merino "Wool Growers' Association was held yesterday in the new Sherman House.Canonsburg, Pa, W. K. Craighead, President of the association, occupied the chair, and J. C. HeNarey was secretary. Owins; to the gathering being a postponed meeting:, the attendance was not as large as it wonld otherwise would hare been. Theie were abont 40 delegates present from Penn sylvania, Ohio and Indiana. They repre sented some of the wealthiest sheep breeders in the country. A discussion lasting over an hour was in dulged in on the advisability of issning a new register of the sheep produced by each breeder. This volume was to include the record of every sheep The motion was finally carried, and the book will be issued in October alter the animals are counted. A request was received from a number of Ohio sheep breeders asking for admission into the association, and requesting that their flocks be examined. The members of the association did not take kindly to the appli cation. The rules are that any persons coming into the association must first secure some of the Delaine merino sheep and breed tbem. SITEPHEKDS DEFEND THEIE SHEEP. An article publish ed In the Michigan Farmer came In for a great amount of condemnation. It contained a speech delivered by R. Gibbons, at Rochester, N. Y before the New York hheep Breeders' Association. In the speech, Mr. Gibbons made an attack on the Delaine breed of sheen, saving tbat the stock was In ferior. It was decided to reply to the speech and deny the charge. Secretary McNarey thought it probable that Mr. Gibbons bad been deceived by havingother sheen palmed off on him as Delaines. The secretary said that a cumber of breeders tbrongbout the country ere representing themselves a members of the National Delaine Association, and breeders of Delaine sheen. These breeders were impos tors and should be prosecuted. Mr. Orr, editor of the blockman of Pittsburg, who was present at the meeting, made a long speech on the subject, and showed the animus of the attack. The charge was made by Mr. Gibbons, that the published illustrations of the Delaine sheep represented them to De better animals than they really were. A committee of three, composed of President Craighead, Sec retary McNarerfand T. E. Orr, was appointed to deny the charges. James Bell, of Independence, made a motion to abolish the practice of washing sheen. He said the United States Wool Growers' Associa tion had adopted a law prohibiting its members from washing the animals. He stated it is only a question of time until all the wool growers in the country would refuse to wash their wool. A great many growers do not now wash their sheep, as it is injurious to the animals. Buyers force growers who do not wash their sheep to accept a lower price for their wool. If farmers would not wash their animals they would get as good a price as they do now, when the wool is cleaner. President Craighead advocated the "un washed." He said if sheep were sheared in March the growers wonld get clean wool and ibe animals would be benefited. If tne wool Is allowed to stay on tbe sbeep until May it gets dirty and tbe grower is compelled to accept a loner price for it. Others thought it paid to wash the sheep, as they get better prices for tbe wooL Tbe manufacturers wonld rather have tbe wool unwashed on account of having to pay "washed" prices, when the product is but half clean. If there was a universal move ment not to wash the sheep tbe wool growers would get better prices for the product. The motion was adopted. The following officers were re-elected: V. B, Craighead. President: J. B. Johnston, Treas urer. J. C. McNarey. Recording Secretary, and James McClelland. Corresponding Secretary. Tbe Executivo Committee of the Association recommended the suspension of J. K. Bailey, formerly of Washington, bnt now a breeder near Urbana, 0 for transferring sheep that had not been registered. Tbe report was laid upon the table for action at another meeting. A GRAND BANQUET. After the business meeting a banqnet was held in tbe dining hall of the hotel. Tbe room was profusely and tastefully decorated for the occasion. In the center of the long table at which the banqueters sat, was tbe figure of a ram's bead with large gilded boms. Smilax and flowers were scattered over the figure, making a pretty effect. Tbe menu was a mas terpiece from the bands of a chef and wonld have done credit to a first-class Pi ttsburghnte 1. After discussing the viands for two hours. President Craigbead called for speeches. The latter were as follows: "Those Who Feed Us," A S. Miller; 'The Ministers Wno Do the Washing," Dr. W. F. Brown: "Our Wool Growers Who Do tbe Shearing," A W. Herriott, of Imperial. "Our Doctors Who Do the Trimming." Dr. T. Allison, of Kittanninjr. "Our Lawyers Who Do the Fleecing," D. F. Brown, Esq., of Caiions bnrg. Other speeches were made by W. G. Berry, of Honstonville; R. L. Muntz, of Canons, burg; Julius Le Moyne, of Washington: Gen eral William S. Callaghan. of Cannnsburg; Jonathan Allison, of Washington; Dr. J. B. Donaldson, of Canonsburg; T. E. Orr, of Pitts burg; J. Murray Clark, i-sq , ot Canonsburg, and Minor Day, of Washington. It was thonght that some action wonld be taken on the tariff-wool question on account of Congress now being lb session. Nothing was done, however, abont the matter. In re gard to it. President Craigbead said: "We are satisfied with tbe present tariff as we think it is high enongh to protect our business. The only thing wrong with the law is that it allows waste wool to be imported free. This supposed waste is good wool, and conies into competition witb tbe wool sheared in this country. If the customs officers were a little vigilant they could make it pay duty, and tbe American wool growers would receive the benefit of tbe transaction. The association as an organiza tion does not take action of such matters on account of the members being partisans. To discuss tbe tariff would lead to trouble, and we try to avoid It, if possible." Pittsburg's municipal Government the Best In tbe Country Not a Dire or a Gambling House Within Its Limits. Tbe following well-known prominent hnsiness men of the city of Pittsburg have publicly indorsed Henry L Gourlev, Re publican candidate for Mayor of-the city for tbe following reasons. He is an honest, straightforward, intelligent business "man himself, thoroughly acquainted and con versant with the governmental affairs of Pittsburg and in sympathy with all meas ures projected for its municipal progress and prosperity. These indorsements are not the ebullient encomiums of friend ship, bnt come from a large class of business men in indorsement of one of their fellows, and the indorsement is not sentimental, but of a business character. Their highest indorsement, however, comes from their knowledge of the fact that Mr. Gonrley stands as the representative of that element of the'eitizenshin of Pittsburg, whose highest ideal is the giving to this mu nicipality a momentum commensurate with its busiuess importance and standing. This element has given to Pittsburg a govern ment that challenges the admiration of mod ern municipal lawmakers and is regarded as the perfection of retorm in. municipal measures. Under the active, rigorous warfare that the head of the Department of PublicSafety has made on the dives, the dens, tbe gam bling hells, the policy shops, that were cor rupting the young and old of both sexes, all of them have been driven from Pittsburg, and to-day there is not a single oneof them within the cognizance of the municipal au thorities. JThe Judges of the Courts of Quarter Sessions of Allegheny county have repeatedly from the bench complimented the Department of Public Safety on this ac count. Blackmailing Aldermen and venal, vicions and corrupt judicial officials have been hunted down and sent tor long terms to the penitentiary and workhouse, and aiders and abettors of the criminal classes have found Pittsburg too warm as a place of residence. Not another city in tile country can parallel this record, and no other city in the country can approach Pittsburg in the matter of intelligent, economical adminis tration of all of its various departments. Fathers and mothers having sons liable to temptation know these facta by heart and feel no fear when their children are out of sight. This is the most satisfactory com mentary on the excellence of the city morals, and jt all results from the constant super vision that the Department Of Public Safety has upon the affairs within its charge. In view of these facts it is not astonishing that tbe following well-known business men add their tribute of praise to Mr. Gourley and indorse his candidacy: Joshua Rhodes, iron manufacturer; Jacob Painter and A E.W. Painter, of J. Painter & Sons; J. D. Scully and Chas. E. Speer, of the First National Bank; "Win. Holmes, of A. Garrison & Co.; E. C. Schmertz, Halpin, Kennedy & Co.; J. B. D.
