vi. t THE HTTSBTJRG- DISPATCH, THURSDAY, JANUARY' 30, 189(X S THE0L0GIC THUNDER Ebenezer Church's Outs Say That it Rolled All Around the Skv. ODD IDEAS ON CLOSE COMMUNION. One Unwilling Sister is Threatened With an Attachment. ODTS HAKE THE 1KB Q1TE ETIDEKCE There 'was another meeting yesterday be fore the commissioner to take evidence on the connter-applicatiocs for a charter for the Ebenezer Baptist Church, at the corner of Colwell and Miller streets, in which it was developed that some of the "ins" at well as the "outs" were disposed to fight iatitudinarianism. James Bryant testified that he did not know why the church had side-tracked him, as he knew of no charges preferred against him, and had never been notified that there were any. Oncross-examination the witness said he cow belonged to what is called the Band of Brethren. He said he was one of the par ties who presented a petition for redress of grievances. On redirect examination Mr. Bryant said that he had asked that Messrs. Morton, Carter, Johnson and Murray be given a show, and this seemed to be the cause of his expulsion. Sarah Bryant testified that she knew of no reason why the church had expelled her. She had also signed the paper asking for the call of a council to pass on what were con sidered by the "outs" the unwarranted ex pulsion of the gentlemen above named. This lady's views of what constituted close and open communion were some v hat unique. NOT BUN REGULAR. Mary C. Johnson said she had never re ceived any authoritative notice to attend an investigation, and had been excluded with out hearing. She said that after Mr. Pryor took hold the church had not been run as a regular Baptist church. Mrs. E. Ford deposed that Bev. Pryor told her she had been excluded because she had signed a paper asking for a council to pass on the question as to whether the bounced brethren had been given a fair trial. Mrs. Hester Scott's story was similar to that of her predecessors, except the addition that Kev. Pryor had fired Brother Porter because they could not agree upon an ex egesis of a certain portion of the Scripture, Sister Scott objected to Methodists not in good standing in their own church being asked to partake o! the communion, and the pastor said, "If she don't like to eat, let her go." "William Herbert objected to testifying until authority was shown to compel him, and he was informed that he was too late in filing his objection, as he was now in the toils and could not escape. Witness was a deacon -when the exclnded were ousted. He said he had notified Sister Scott to attend trial. "Witness did not serve copies of no tice, but thought they should have been so furnished as a matter of right The charges presented were "disorderly," and witness said "disorderly" consisted in not appearing before the church when notified. Witness believed that some of the grievances were well founded and that others were not. In some respects the witness thought the church was conducted as a regular Baptist church and in others that it was not The management was more flexible than he had been previously accustomed to, but he con tinued to commune. On cross-examination the witness said some of the excluded had been before the Board of Deacons, and it sent their cases to the church to get their auto de fe. The charge "disorderly," Mr. Herbert said, con sisted in members absenting themselves from church. He said a council could not be called unless the church agreed to it, but if the church refused, then the association might withdraw the hand of fellowship. In such case Mr. Herbert did cot know whether the church might be called a regular Bap tist church, but as tor himself he proposed to be a regular Baptist He had doubts whether a church could in all cases kick successfully against the association. HISCOCE HAD THE PREFERENCE. Thornton Dyer also wanted to know, as a condition precedent to testifying, whether he had been regularly subpoenaed and was told to go on, as he was in the trap. He said the Lord's snpper was cot adminis tered by Kev. Pryor according to regular Baptist usage, but according to the Xew Testament direction. He said Hiscock's Manual was taken as authority in "hard cases," instead of the New Testament The exclusion of members was "for talking." They were all excluded for having their names to the paper, which was against the rules ot the church. "The rule was made to prevent free speech." He said that the charge preferred before the association re garding the mode of administering the com munion against the Ebenezer "ins" was true. On cross-examination the witness said the roll of the church would not be evidence to him of membership unless he heard the members answer to their names. He would cot undertake to say whether the New Tes tament or Hiscock was the best authority regarding the mode of administering the communion. Frank Churchwell could cot say, for his "life," why these people were excluded only on hearsay. He was present when some of the members were excluded, and seemed to think it was the ready-one-two-three fire order. The witness is still a member of the church, as well as Mr. Herbert, but he says he does not commune regularlyias psedobaptists and other kinds of believers are allowed to par take. Bev. J. H. Pryor was recalled, and said that Mrs. Frances Gilbert was not now a member of the church. He denied that he had advised her not to attend the hearing before Commissioner Clark yesterday. Messrs. Frescott and Bros and their client!), however, shook their heads significantly, and hinted that Sister Gilbert would be present at the next hearing or something would be heard drop. Jutte, coal dealer, of thiscitv, ran into a bank in the Ohio river yesterday at Bock port, Ind. The particulars of the accident have not been fully received, except that it occurred during a fog, and five boats were lost, but all folly insured. The Pacific struck a coal boat owned by Fawcett & Son while coming down with a tow. Subsequently the Jim Brown ran over the sunken craft and rendered it a total loss. The sunken boat belonging to Hays & Hamilton is now being raised. A few shipments were made yesterday. The Sam Clark left with 17 barges; the Geo. Cook left for Cincinnati with 14 barges, also a tow with 12 barges. The Dick Fulton will leave to-day with seven light boats and seven barges bound for Louisville. Mr. F. L. Bobbins says in reierenceto the scale adopted by the Columbus convention of miners that he does cot think their new scale can go into effect, although the opera tors are able to pay somewhat more than the present prices. QUICK TIME TO EAST END. Tbo P. K. R. Will Slake ibo Cable Lines Get n Faster ftlove On. District Passenger Agent Thomas E. Watt, of the Pennsylvania Kailroad, was asked yesterday if his company had taken any official notice of the cable railway reduction offaretoEastLiberty. Hesaid: "Thereisno necessity for it We are making better time than the cable cars and the fare will be only 2 cents more than by the other lines. We have 20 trains per day that make the run be tween Pittsburg and East Liberty in less than 12 minutes. Br commutation tickets we make the fare only 7 cents. If we make it any lower we will have to carry people for nothing, and I do not think we are lia ble to do this. I can leave my office at the corner of Fifth avenue and Smithfield street, walk to the Union station and be at the East Liberty station in 20 minutes from the time I left my office. I have tried the cable lines, and in the crowded part of the evening I have found that I would only be as far as Oakland in the same time. When a street car stops at every crossing it cannot be expected that it will make the time." FATHER STRDB'S F0NERAL. Solemn Services Conducted In St. Paul's Cntholic Cathedral. The funeral of the Very Kev. Joseph Strub, C. S. P.. Provincial of the Order of the Holy Ghost in the United States, took place yesterday from St Paul's Cathedral. The remains were interred under the altar, in the mortuary chapel belonging to the or der at Sharpsburg. The remains were conveyed from the Holy Ghost College to the church by the students ot the college, the Order of Stanislaus and many Catholics of Sharpsburg. At the church the "office for the dead" was chanted, followed by a requiem high mass. The latter was celebrated by Father Schwab, assisted by Father Jaworski as deacon and Father Koch as sub-deacon. Father Wall preached the sermon. Among the distinguished guests present was the bishops of Grand Bapids, Mich. HOW FARES WERE REDUCED. The Tractioa Company's Philadelphia Di rectors Decided. The reduction of fare on the Fifth Avenne line, which was noted in yesterday's issue, has occasioned considerable curiosity as to how it was brought about without a regular meeting of the company, which it was un derstood would have to take place before anything could be done. In reference to the matter Secretary Mc Farland states that endeavors were made to bring the directors together, but as the ma jority reside in Philadelphia, some of whom were ill and unable to make a trip to this city, an informal meeting was held there a few days since, and with the assistance of a little correspondence the decision already known was arrived at TO CONTINUE HIS SEARCH. Colonel Helm Refuses to Give the Nnmes of the Pittsburg Heirs. Colonel W. W. Helm, of Louisville, Ky., who has been in the city the past few days searching for the Pittsburg heirs to part of an estate of 300,000 acres in Eastern Ken tucky, left for Cincinnati last night to con tinue his search in that city. He will re turn to Pittsburg and complete his work within a few months. He refused to say yesterday who the Pittsburg heirs were on account of the feeling it might engender. He also thinks the squatters cow on the gronnd would cause him trouble if too much was said about the matter. ELECTRICITY IN WILKINSBURG. A Contract Closed for a Plant In the Pros perons Borough. Hughes & Gawthrop, agents of the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, in this city, yesterday closed a contract with the Wilkinsburg Electric Company for an electric light plant The latter will consist of 1,300 incandescent and 30 arc lights. The contract is worth about $25,000. The plant must be ready for operation by March 1. A Question of Responsibility. Thomas E. Miaco, business manager of the May Howard Burlesque Company, states that a satchel belonging to him, con taining $440, was stolen from the safe of the St Charles Hotel on Monday night, and he asks that the hotel be responsible for the loss. The proprietor declines on the ground that Mr. Miaco did not state that the satchel contained money, and therefore only ordi nary care was exercised. The Central Trvs Its Power. The Central Traction's motive power was tested yesterday. Trial trips will be made this week, but active operation is postponed until next week. As GOOD AS GOLD. If things in the building line continue much longer as they are at present there will be a radical reforming of lines, or the breeching will give way somewhere. A prominent building contractor, belonging to a firm that runs a dozen large gangs of men, said yesterday: "If there is not a rearrangement soon, I will pnll out of business and go at farming or something else that I can control. There are several causes for the present unsati factory condition of affairs. In the first place there is always a shoal of journeymen who think they have administrative ability sufficient to make money contracting, and their competition has pulled down the price on ordinary work (the speaker's specialty is brick work) until in the buildine of dwelling houses, with the fre quent stops necessary for carpenters to put in joists, etc., the brick-laying con tractor must work himselt if he wants to make any money, and he must be a hustler at running men or he cannot do it even then. If he trust to the tender mercy of the average foreman he will lose money. We only take work of this kind in order to be able to keep our best hands employed in dull times. We can still make some money on special work or on large contracts by pushing things sharply. "Now we must allow nine hours to con stitute a day's work and pay the same wages we formerly paid for ten hours' service. Material is also higher than it was before the hours of labor were decreased, and this spring brickmakers have advanced bricks a dollar a thousand and yet our rates remain the same. We will not do much this season unless we get better prices." This man's individual share of last year's profits was, $3,700, but he says he would not go through the same amount of worry again to make twice that amount of money. As he has accumulated sufficient wealth to live fairly well without work his plight is not so bad as it might be, but it seems that there are many contractors not so well fixed, who would do as well as they do cow and save worry were they to work by the day. Sale begins to-day Every remnant, short length and single pattern, Bilks aud dress goods, must go this week. Prices will do it Jos. Horne & Co.'s Penn Avenue Stores.
