HIS VEESIM OF THE LATE EOW. Miss Zola Avers, His Wife, Bays That Bhe Didn't Break the House Bales. DOW THE UNPLEASANTXESS OCCURRED It was Sabbath in the dime museum, and a holy calm pervaded the entire establish ment, except the cage of monkeys, the qaadrnmana performing what Captain "Wishart would call worldly employment and generally demeaning themselves in secular and boisterous manner. This was much to the regret of the estimable female with thin legs, who sat on a crossbar and mildly rebaked them for their antics. The wild and woolly "Westerners had thrown off their sombreros and their scowls, and were studying a publication by Mr. Fox, possibly Fox's Book of Martyrs. The little demon whose habitat is a glass cylinder of water and dances up and down in obedience to an electric current, lay at the bottom of the jar exhausted, and looking as if he had been painting things red or Saturday. But the sentiments of the day found little echo in the capacious bossom of J. Hanson Craig, the champion iat man. who had the honor of knighthood conferred 'upon him under the title of Sir Marcns Goodwillie, bv Mr. Kohl, of Kohl & Middleton, Chicago. Mr. Kohl assumed the authority of conferring knighthood on account of his descent Irom "Old King Cole, the Merry Old Soul," so famed in song. The story of the trouble in the "World's Museum on Friday night has been told al ready in The Dispatch, but not tbe in dividual wrongs of the good old Sir Knight of Falstaffian proportions, who claims that his wife has been insulted by the manager's statement that he did not know whether they were married or not, and accusing her ot talking to tbe patrons ot tbe museum in "violation of the rules. A rLEASING VOSLUT. Mrs. M. J. F. Craig known on the stage as Miss Zola Ayers, is well formed and tall, and a pleasing conversationalist, which may possibly account lor her objection to be re stricted in that art. She indignantly re pudiates anv attempt at mashing or flirta tion, the exercise of her powers of charming ontside of the domestic circle being re stricted to her snakes. Her version of tbe nffair is that she is a Dauchter of Rebecca, her husband beins a Past Grand of the I. O. O. F., and a Mr. Carroll, of the "West End, seeing her badge, made a lraternal motion of recognition to which she responded. She savs she had hardly time to say a few vords when a copy of the rules of the house was thrust under her view by the manager, and, being near sighted, she could not see what they were, and was ordered down from her platform as already reported. She can see no reason in equity or law why the lraternal links so fa miliar to all could not be fashioned of snakes as of sausages, and proposed to assert her rights and dispense sisterly greetings even as Rebecca of old dispensed refresh ment from the well. Manager H. M. Scott stated his objections to his exhibits catching the grip iu this or anr other manner, and insists upon no con versation being held with the natrons by the freaks, except of the briefest possible character, and those on information only. He does not secede one inch from his posi tion, and claims that, while the wife broke the rules, the husband broke his contract in leaving the hall before the performance was over. HE IS GOING TO LAW. The 907 pounds of avoirdupois, as per advertisements, with tbe handle to his name, is determined that he shall test in the law courts both the financial offers made him by the mueum treasurer and the style of etiquette peculiar to maseum circles. He will have not only his numerous pounds of flesh, but also the monetary consideration therefor, and says he will fight it outon that line if it takes all summer. He gives as his reason for leaving the hall that he felt a nervous fit coming on, to which he is sub ject, from having rushes of blood to the head, and was afraid he might create a stampede if he remained, and so left to obtain medical treatment. He also claims that when he went to collect his salary for being tbe heaviest man on earth, he was offered $110 85, instead of 5140, and not only had the former sum a string to it, but a club back of it, which he claims only the inter vention of the giant of the combination pre vented coming in contact with his head, which already decorated witb a piece of sil ver, a sort ot family plate, as it were, from collision with a set of brass knuckles. Pre ferring not to take salary with club sauce, the gentleman who sustained the heavy part in the tragedy withdrew, and is now breath ing Blackstone and vengeance. TEESEXT KEYELAT10X. Elder Devere Maintain Tbnt God Hit Not Ceased to Spenk to Men. The Beorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was addressed yester day forenoon, in their hall at No. 81 Fourth avenue, by Elder L. B. Devore. There was an attendance of about 50 persons. The elder spoke upon "Continued Bevelation," defending the doctrine of the Church that God reveals Himself to men in this day as He did in former ages. He insisted that God was unchangeable, and that men need revelation now. He took up various texts which Christians quote in support of their theory that revelation ended with St. John, and he endeavored to show that the texts did not warrant the conclusion. He then re ferred to other texts to support his position: the twenty-ninth chapter of Isaiah; Ezekiel xxxvii. 15-28; Bevelation xiv. 6 and 7. He said that the Scriptures abound with proof that God would speak to men in "the latter days," which, he held, are now at nana. j.ne latter kingdom, he said, would be similar to the earlier, with apostles and prophets. This was in defense of the prophecies of Joseph Smith. "The result of the present reorganization," said the elder, "will be the gathering of the saints back to Jerusalem. That gathering is going on at the present time. Jerusalem will be rebuilt in glory, never to be de stroyed. It will be the seat of an inde pendent kingdom. Christ will come again in person, and reign on the earth a thousand years. Then will take place the resurrection of the righteous, but the wicked will not live until the thousand years be ended." FATHER SHEEDI'S SCHOOL It Will be Formally Opened February 12 Governor Beaver, Revs. DIcCrorr and McAllister and Others to be Invlied A Souvenir Giving a Hlsiorr of the Chnreh. Bev. Father Sheedy, pastor of St. Mary of Mercy Church, has changed the date of the opening of his parochial school to February 12. It was intended several weeks ago to have the event celebrated on "Washington's Birthday the 22d. On account of that day falling on Saturday, and also because the American Mechanics will have a demon stration on that day, it was thought best to make the change. A well-known layman who will take part in the demonstration re marked yesterday that the two shows could not be held on the same day. and for that reason Father Sheedy changed the date. The building will be finished sooner than the pastor expected. As was stated in The Dispatch several weeks ago Bishop Phe lan will conduct the ceremony. "Within a few days Father Sheedy will send out invi tations to all the prominent city officials to take part in the opening. An invitation will also he sent to Governor Beaver, and he will be asked to be on hand and make an address. It is stated that invitations will also be sent to Revs. McCrory and McAllis ter and Messrs. Baldwin, Hanna and others who opposed Father Sheedy in the First ward school matter, .a numner oi me prom inent officers of the Jr. O. TJ. A. M. will also be invited. The opening ceremonies will last several days. The affair will be something more than an ordinary school opening on account of the structure being the finest parochial bnilding in the State. The building is on Penn avenue between Second and Third streets. It is three stories high, built of pressed brick with rough stone trimmings. The present Catholic school population of the ward is about 250 and the new building will accommodate over 300 children. On the first floor are three large school rooms with wrap closets, etc. A large library which will be open during the evening, will also be located on the first floor. Father Sheedy purchased nearly the entire stock of a bookstore which was being sold ont, to furnish books for the library. All the rooms arc well ventilated and sup plied with light. The floors are bard wood, and the ceilings of handsomely painted corrugated iron. Bach room and all the hallways have combina tion gas fixtures. Electricity will be used for artificial light, but in case of accident the gas can also be used. On the second floor are three more large school rooms fur nished the same as below. On the third is a hall which will seat over 600 people. It is 110 leet long by 30 teet wide, and tbe acoustic properties are so perfect that a whisper can almost be heard at the other end. On the top of the building, on the Penn avenue side, will be a handsome gothic cross. Heavy plate glass windows, do nated by A. F. Kim, will be pnt in the vestibule doors. In the cellar is the steam heating apparatus to heat the building, closets, etc A bowling alley for tile boys will also be put in, and as soon as the build ing is paid for a gymnasium in the base ment will be one of the attractions. The latter will also be kept open at night, and will be a good place for the youths of the ward to put in their time in the evenings. The chairs, etc, will be of the very best make. Father Sheedy is now at work on a sou venir to be given away at the opening. It will contain a history ot the parish church and school, and everything pertaining to the rules and regulations of the church. It will also contain a list of the names of tbe contributors to tbe fund for the erection of the school building. Among the names are a number of Protestants. In the history of the church Father Sheedv says: "Within the present limits of the narish was offered'to Almighty God the first Christian act of worship held in Western Pennsylvania. A Catholic chapel existed at Fore Daquesne dur ins the period of the French occupation from 1751 to 1753. The holy sacrifice of the mass was regularly celebrated and the sacraments ad ministered by the resident chaplain to the French forces and their Indian allies, for the most part Catholic, daring these Tears. With the fall of the fort In 175$, the chapel disapneared for a time. However, daring the years that elapsed between the French evacua tion and the erection of the first Catholic churcn in Pittsburg, services were held in the parish by missionaries on their way to and from the West. When St. Paul's Cathedral was built the parish boundaries embraced the present congregation of St Mary of Mercy Not until November 20, 1S68, was the congrega tion formally organized. About tbe middle of that year tbe lease to a piece of property on First street with the house on tbe same was purchased. The small structure was fitted up for a chapel which was dedicated November 20. The name given the chapel was "Our Lady of Consolation." In the f ollowiac year an addition was put to the bnild ing and the reconstrncted chapal was dedicated April 11, 1869. A resident pastor was appointed in the same year. In May, 1S76, the Ames Methodist Episcopal Church corner Third avenue and Ferry street was purchased. It was reconstructed and dedicated September 24,1876. The school was established in 1S63L The rooms on the second story of tbe old chapel on First street were utilized for school purposes. At first lay teachers were employed, but after a few years, the Sisters of Mercy took charge. About a year ago it was found that the old building was unsafe and a change had to be made. The property upon which the new school stands was purchased in January, 1SS9, at a cost of 19.000. In July tbe work on tbe new building was commenced. The building cost about 15,000 to complete it. BEICL'S EUCTION. Al Carlisle Says It Was tbe Cleanest Cam- palcn Ever Conducted In Ohio. Mr. Al Carlisle, the Ohio politician, ar rived from Columbus Saturday evening, and will remain in this city two or three days. He is all smiles over the election ot Colonel Brice. "It was the cleanest campaign," he says, ''ever conducted in Ohio. The talk of pnrchase is entirely without foundation. The men who indulge in it do so without any facts on which to base their assertions. I have had a large experience with men, and I tell you that Mr. Brice is one of the keenest men I ever met. He will take a prominent position in the Senate, and the Buckeye State will be proud of him. He is a thorough man, a careful man and a man of broad views. One of his most remarka ble characteristics is his great attention to details. That is one of tbe elements of his success. That characteristic and his won derful capacity as an organizer account for his election to the Senate. "Mr. Brice has an interesting family. His wife is a charming woman, and they have five children, two daughters and three sons." Mr. Carlisle does not believe that there is any probability that a Republican will be elected in place of either of tbe three Demo cratic members who have died. Their dis tricts, he says, are all reliably Democratic Mr. Carlisle thinks that Colonel Brice's election to the Senate and his thorongh or ganization will keep Ohio Democratic HORSFORD'S ACID PHOSPHATE For Night Sweats Of consumption, gives speedy benefit Auction Sale Japanese Goods. Will the Act of 1873 Knock Oat the Beck's Ran Schindery ? SODTHSIDE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW A very brilliant scum reflecting the prismatic hues of the rainbow, and an alluvial deposit, one-eighth of an inch in depth, was the product of a quart of Mo iiongahela river water drawn upon Friday at 11 P. 21. and inspected on Saturday at 8 A. M. This gave an indication of what the water is, and yet the citizens complain that Councils do not move in the matter. A Southside medical man said yesterday: "Certainly that schindery should be taken away, the cases of zymotic diseases on Beck's Bun and close by showing its disease-breeding tendency: but the Jlonon- gahela river has other sources of pollution. Any river with a natural course of water is supposed to 'purify itself in 21 miles. The Monongahela river is slack watered up to Brownsville, and no clarifying current can be brought into requisition. There are also some 05,000 inhabitants from the influent pipe to McKeesport, only 16 miles away, whose vaults drain into a slack-watered river, and the teapots, coffee pots and soup pots of the Southside residents. OTHEE THINGS TO BLAME. "Of course the schindery maybe regarded as a sort of finishing touch, putting perhaps the scums upon the water or the disease germs in suspension, but a case of typhoid or scarlet fever at Braddock, Homestead, Duquesne or McKeesport is just as likely to be repeated at Mount Washington as it would be at Mills' station." Conncilman Nisbet, of the Thirty-first ward, who has done all he could to get a meeting of the schindery committee together, said yesterday that he thought the agitation of The Dispatch upon the water question was right, and a meeting of the committee would take place before another week would roll by. He said he saw the necessity of action in the matter every day when he turned a tap to draw water for his store or house use, and that any person who doubted it would find ample proof by sampling some of the water supplied to the Twenty sixth, Twentyfourth, Thirty-first, Thirty second, or in fact to any of the Southside wards. It was possible that the committee on a subject which affects over 75,000 people, who are driven to wells sunk in made ground, which, loose as it is, allowed all kinds of matter to per colate through it, or to take the sewage from Beck's Bun, Homestead, Braddock, Port Perry. Duquesne and McKeesport, with other places between them which con tribute their mite to the Monongahela Company's effort to spread disease. In order to give the schindery the fnll benefit of consideration when the committee does meet the following act of Assembly is quoted regarding the deposit of carcasses upon or in the Ohio, Monongahela, or Allegheny rivers. The act is dated Feb ruary 7, 1873, and reads: UNLAWFUL PRACTICES. First From and after the passage of this act it shall not be lawful to deposit the car casses of hones, cattle or swine in tbe Ohio, the Monongahela or the Allegheny rivers, or in any streams flowing into either of the same, or on the banks of said rivers and streams, within the county of Allegheny. Second Any person offending against the provisions of the first section of this act, shall be liable to a fine of 20. to be recovered before any Justice of the Peace or Alderman; one half of the fine to go to the constable, or other person, making the information, and the other half to the county. "Whether the deposit of the carcasses or the impregnation of the waters of the national highways with the essence of carcasses can be covered by this act remains to be discov ered, and the courts will probably have to decide the question within a very short time.
