November 18, 1943. D-E “Reynolds” Comp pleted In 25 _ Days by Bethlehem Yard 7 A new world’s record in ship con- struction was achieved November 3 by the Bethiehem-Hingham ship- yard when it delivered the 1,300-ton destroyer-escort “Reynolds” within 256 days of the time the keel was laid. The ship, which will carry a com- plement of 185 officers and men and cost approximately $3.500000, was delivered to the United States Navy which In turn will place it in the service of the British Royal Navy for anti-U-boat and convoy duty in the Atlantic. This record surpasses py more than 20 days the mark set »y Beth- lehem in the first World War when it delivered the destroyer “Reid” to the American Navy 45% doys after the laying of the keel, a new record up to that time. The first group of the type of ship built for this war by the Bethelehem-Hingham vard re- quired 302 days to complete, The next group in her class required 206 days. The yard && busy constructing additional destroyer-escorts which will join the “Reynolds” in the Brit- ish Navy. The “Reynolds” will over to Admiral H. T. Smith, Su- pervisor of Shipbuilding, USN. Quincy, Mass, by General Manager W. H. Collins of the Bethlehem Hingham yard. Admiral Smith will then deliver the vessel to the British command- ing officer and she will immediately become formally designated “H M 8. Reynolds.” The “Reynolds.” ships, is bulit for handling fire power revolving cannon, a gun, each barrel rounds of 2-pound minute, effective at against air or surface targets It also possesses numerous 20-mm Oerlikon machine guns with a tential fire power of nearly 00 a minute. A potent feature of armament are various K-gun throwing down 300-pound cans.” The “Reynolds” type escort is 308 feet long and breadth and is known cles as the “Terrier of the Sea.” Her superstructure has been described as a “cross between an overgrown sub- marine conning tower and a gigan- tic tank turret.” The wheel-house, charthouse are completely encased in protective steel armor. The two stepped-down gun platforms just forward are among the features which contribute to an altogether modern appearance ft of the bridge mast and the squat stack, and followed by odd-shaped platforms and crannies whicl vide additional gun-mounts “Reynolds” be turped like her sister speed and quick- She has three 40-mm. Bofors capable of 120 projectiles pe: 2500 yards po shell he; for “ash of destroyer- 36 feet In bridge and the short flanked are The vessel has been described by Naval men as being something be-| tween a corvette and a destroyer in size and Naval men pridefully de clare that she can outrun the fast- test corvette or submarine The design of the destroyer-es« cort was conceived three vears ago by Admiral E. L. Cochiane, Chief of the Bureau of Ships, Washing- ton, ing a four-months study in England of all angles of the Atlantic convoy problem. He concluded that a larger, [faster and more heavily armed ship in Naval cir-! than the corvette was heeded suc- cessfully to combat the growing U- boat menace along the Anglo-Amer- lean donvoy lanes. Navy ship design- ers and engineers then laid the plans for the construction of the destroy- er=escort. It includes the last word in ma- rine innovations for both warlare and navigation—and jt has oeen one of the important contributing fac tors in the successful Allled war against the Nazi undersea craft, When the Navy first assigned the construction of escort-destroyers to the Bethlehem-Hingham yurd, its officers planned that it would re- quire four months to build, from keel-laying to launching The Bethlechem-Hinghem yard quickly put into operation the latest assembly line methods for quantity production, ang progressively whit- tied the construction time down, as pointed out above, until this new world record was achieved — MD dr sr——— FOREST PRODUCTS MARKETING SERVICE Now is the time to cut and market the mature timber on the farm woodlot.
