Bometimes the pair worked alone, depending upon the size and importance of the un- dertaking; on other occasions they banded with others of evil repute Their favorite haunt was to be found in the wilds of the Seven Mountains Lewis was a son of Lewis Lewi, who was a surveyor] in Nittany Val- ley as early as 177) In spite of the evil vocation he fol owed Dave Lewls was regarded as a(remarkable man He is sald to hav J been very pleas- ant and agreeably In manner, and well proportioned in build. His arms possessed the pouliarity of being tapered from Jghe shoulders to the ends of his gingers, so that it was almost impOssible to keep handcufls upon hat, He was very agile and swift of foot. Mild in disposition, he restrained his companions in crime from excesses and murder Like the well known “Robin Hood.” he frequently took from the rich and gave to the poor. This attempt at describing the personal attributes of Lewis is not intended to place him in the role of a hero, but rather to prove that had he pursued a different course of life he might have been a val. uable citizen, He had two brothers, who lived quite different lives from that of Lewis. Caleb Lewis, a single terrorized man, worked at the Milesburg Porge He was a common laborer for Jos- eph Miles and Joseph Green, then proprietors of the works. Thomas Lewis, the other brother, a civil and harmless man, lived in a stone house near Roopsburg Dan Connelly, on the other hand, was described as vicious. savage, and vindicative. He would not hesi- tate to kill. and although he was never known to commit murder, he was probably prevented from doing $0 many times through the inter- vention of Lewis. Their last robbery which led to their downfall and capture was the plundering of several wagons load- ed with store goods for Hammond & Page, merchants in Bellefonte. The robbery occurred in the Beven Mountains and the party consisted of Lewis, Connelly, and a amall man named Jeffries. whom Lewis said was an expert, a perfect ferret and weasel It has been sald of Lewis and Connelly that they intended to make a clean-up in a series of rob- beries this night and then leave Centre county for other fields where they could carry on their nefarious work. Whether this is true or not, it proved to be the final act that brought to an end the terrorism they had inflicted on law-abiding citizens.
