Campbell Cioses Successful | Series of Evangelistic Meetings at Howard With Inspiring Sermon, Sunday, Jan. 25th. (Sermon preached ! F. Camphell, Ex Penna, Sunday, Text “Let ev, B. Howard, 1814) many the inRelist, at January 25, us therefore, as as be perfect, thus minded: and if in any thing ve otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you" Philippians 3:15 When John Wesley peculiar views of the jous names were speedily attached to it, such as Perfection, Christian Per- fection, Entire Sanctification, and the Higher Life, and Such can't phrases as "The Second Blessing,” or “The Having Attained.” This was very dis- pleasing to Wesley, who instructed his votaries not to give any name to the blessing vold” said he, "all mag- nificent, pompous words; indeed you need give it no name, neither “Perfection,” Sanctification,” “Sec- ond Blessing,” nor Having At- tained,” rather speak the things which God has for you. Now there standing what not, as there it is. 1 misunderstanding it takes and wisdom Bible truth, and prejudice and opposition mies. Now, when { rightly under- the doctrine and experience of Perfection will be eagerly and most earnestly sought Reverently and with seeking hearts, and ex- amine the The clearly indi believers wddressed perfect in Christ, w privileges for development in the divine life and ex- rience. That tate de longs to God alone Now in the Perfection is | as it does not pertair to human nature. Down Dale near Williamsport, three years ago last summer, at a camp meeting a certain woman in middle of the congregation and said, “I am as perfect as ingel,” and when she sat down =a in the rear of “Well then, why and go to heaven?" meetings in the Penns Dale er March last beginning one of the plained that would dwel Perfection There op! from all ot the the had alone perfect, i8 in come other sinless in ’" it 8 Christian perfection, angels, but at Penns second not the y fellow out, WIngs N you take I had seri¢ Evangeli I chur HH in March 1 1813, in n yman wh perfect as ad finished n woman oame A mpn i, | I umber was tl that Wi said she # as an ange sermon this me and said, take 3 atter ] y goOG have words to i141 learned that the est Car i841] im ifter found free not times be mist confess to ve perfect as an ing to your that Christian gelie perfec g with angels bu wit man When I was nday we often be gel, and crown upon hand more, the ange listen vord out Ix not an nat nature school an ans stand, A + harp with- that my heart ian, intelligent have coms inderstand Perf not but that as to Sang i to with m § hear for | elieve good « in that peopls Christian perfection, human nature In the fection is not slestia are creatures mental, moral, and ities of sin, as the flesh. So don't think that you can attain celestial, Heavenly nerfection on this side of the resur- rection, for I want to tell you, and leave with you the thought that ce- lestial perfection cannot he gotten by any one in this life Now in the next place, Perfection is not bodily perfection, gince our bodies are not invulnerable, You and I are the pitiable victims of sickness and” physical weakness, We age and lose the power of youth In its vigor and strength; but our Lord will fashion anew the body by a glor- ious transformation. The Mount of Transfiguration brings out the full. ness of his glorious body, and prox- imity to it reveals its mastery over everything material, That ia real glorification. Now just one word in regard to di- vine healing. 1 have come into cone tact with teachers who say when our hearts are perfect, our bodies must also be perfect. 1 sat one day for a full hour In friendly conversation with a divine healer. This man told me that Job was a sinner or the ford would not have tormented him with the boils, 1 sald, ay S08 friend, I am sorry for you, but my Bible tells me that “there was a man in the land of Uz, whose nome was Job; and that man was perfect” He do with third place Christian Per- perfection, living under sical disabil- we are in extinction Jesus Christ “These and make them, glorious body.” i who are fountais of youth the foun- found IR concern - wall of dirt come when these bod his own you want to youth take 13-18 in he our eyes, as We win phy just long as some the youth God's onls 8 us Christian for the | text | "J i of | 1}! There have been the best of people, who have gone down une der sickness, but that does not indi- cate that they are not saved. You may be perfect in body, and still your heart may not be right with God. Now in the next place, Christian Perfection {8 not the same as Regen- feration, as that is the beginning of the divine life in the soul. This is ity fcompicting That is a great work, a glorious fact, and ures for us sal- vation. This Is a much greater work and will bring victory over sin, the constant indwelling of God in the soul and conformity to the will of God in the life Now my friends, bear in mind that not the same as eration, and when vou meet any who is trying to teach it that you can make up your mind they are not straight on it, or they are a little clouded In the next place Christian perfection perfection, as his was a dowment, ours a gracious In Eph 8, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Lord we thank thee for Introducing us to a man who has received seven blessings, and if in pleasing to thee, Lord, let him re- ceive one more, the blessing of good common sense” To perfect in heart does not mean perfect in onduct In the next fection is not Ereat many it he to be place Christian the work of death persons think that | will be made perfect when they | but nonsense, death would be a grim savior, and the dying hour a poor time to make clear, and satisfactory consecration. Now | pray God this morning that there are no peo ple here who think they are free from temptation, for we will never be free from temptation until Jesus shall come, Furthermore Christian Perfection is not exemption from the passibility of falling. We stand by faith and must watch and pray, and If we want to be perfect in love, If we watch and pray God will help us. Again, Christian Perfection 18 not perfection of conduct. My friendk, first of all let us be sure that our conduct Is pleasing to God, not with eyeservice as men pleasers, but doing the will of God from the heart. “Men may misjudge thy aim, Think they have cause for blame, Bay thou art wrong; Hold on thy quist way, Christ is the judge, not they Fear not; be strong.” There are not two people In this great earth alike; every one has Aif- ferent views. It is the people who do not know God that do the stinging Again Christian Perfection not mean the extermination of our animal instincts. The Bible clearly teaches a harmonious regulation and a constant control of all our passions and appetites. Impulses are binding forces, There are some things with- in us which would destroy if not con- trolled, some things that must be sub. jected to control, If we would be per. fect. Paul once sald, “But I keep un- der my bolly, and bring it into sub. jection, lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I, myself should be a castaway.” Now Christian Perfection is not freedom from persecution. There are many persecutions in these days, just as of old, Jesus sald, “If the world hate you, you know that it hated me before it hated you” Paul says, “Yed, and all that live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” One evening 1 was invited out to dinner, and we had fine layer cake with whipped cream for desert, I asked Mrs —wwww how She made the whipped cream, and said that I would like to have the recipe.
