Brilliant Career of a Member of the New British Cabinet, There has been considerable com- ment on the appointment of Winston! Churcaill, son of the late Lord [an- dolph Churchill, to a post in the new British cabinet, as he Is one of the youngest men who ever occupied so fmportant a position. He was born in November, 1874, and therefore is not yet thirty-four, and he looks even | younger than he really is. In England | it is less customary for young men to | reach high political position than It | 18 in this country, which makes the | achievement of Mr. Churchill the more | notable. He occupled the position of | undersecretary of state for the colo | nies during the premiership 'of Sir | Henry Campbell-Bannerman, and it | was freely predicted that when the next shift In the Liberal cabinet oc- curred he would become a member of | it. This prediction has now been ful filled by his appointment to the post of president of the board of trade in the ministry formed by Premier Her- bert Henry Asquith. The Right Hon. Winston Spencer Leonard Churchill, P. C, M. P, now TEE RIGHT HON. WINSTON SPENCER LEON-! ABD CHURCHILL. that he is a British cabinet member, will not be confounded with the Amer fcan Winston Churchill so often as be fore, although the latter has political aspirations too. The fact that both men are in literature has in the past led to much confusion. The American writes novels, however, while the Eng lish Winston Churchill has written chiefly of wilitary expedi tions, although his latest and most talked of work is his blography of his father. He has served as soldier and war correspondent in Cuba and in two African wars and in one of the latter, that with the Boers, had especially ex- citing and romantic adventures, being captured: and escaping from the ene my, who offered a reward for him dead or alive. One night at the height of the campaign spme British officers heard a knock at their door and listen ed until again there came a faint tap ping. On throwing open the door they | accounts rar n a saw a man with his clothing torn who appeared to be on the verge of starva. tion. “Are you Britons or Boers?’ he asked as he supported himself against the doorpost. The officers replied that they were British, and the young man stumbled inside and fell In a dead faint, It was Churchill, just escaped from the Boer lines. The new cabinet member has a spe cial Interest for Americans on account of his mother, formerly Lady Ran dolph Churchill, now Mrs. Cornwallis West, belng American born. As Miss Jenny Jerome she was one of the belles of New York. Mr. Churchill entered parliament as a Conservative, but Is now a Liberal, his change of parties being due to Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's champlonship of protection. He was once asked if he thought there was any truth in the re port that Mr, Chamberlain was suf. fering from “softening of the brain.” “No fear,” snapped the young com- moner viciously, “He has a4 malady of a different sort—hardening of the heart.” SENATOR W.
