THE Boers got a lot of Britishers into a | trap the other day and killed a number of officers and some 30 men. John Bull finds the Boer a bard nut to crack, about as hard as the thirteen colonies. A wAGON load of beer is delivered each day, Sundays excepted, to the crew on the German vessel, Hohenzollern, anchored in the harbor of New York, belonging to Prince Henry ; now the voyage of the Prince is on one of the big steam- ers which will soon touch at New York The Hohenzollern ahead, Prince during his stay States, ten days the United came over and will be occupied by in the - THE name of J. Ely stated, in discussing the subject of the earnings of the self-supporting poor that, as the average wages of the 15,000,000 work- men in manufacturing and mechanical imdustries were $400 a year, and that, as an average of at least two persons de. pended for support on each of these workmen, it follows that on the average three persons live on $8 30 a week, or only $2.77 each. Mr. Ely estimates that each of these persons has only $13 a year left for all purposes after paying for rent, food, fuel and clothing, the very neces. sities of life. on THE great timber industry of the North west is well illustrated by the Oregon forestry exhibit at the Charleston expo- sition. The Charleston ‘News and Courier” describes it as marvelous. One stick of fir 34 inches square and 74 feet long is said to be merely a sample from millions of acres of trees in Oregon that will produce beams as large as this. Nearly a billion feet of lumber were cut in Oregon last year, and the resources of the timber belt, claimed to be the great. est in the world, bave hardly been touched yet. Nevertheless, it will be surprising how these great forests will disappear once the world really gets after them, unless they are guarded carefully and the principles of forestry | are applied. LOCAL ELECTION. Bellefonte always has 1 a lively time on election day that is because the town is filled with natural borm politicians. They take to the thing like young goslins to water. It is a sort of pastime to rip some fellow down the back, baste and roast him in professional style. That is about what happened on Tues- day. This boro has a republican majority of at least 150, but these figures were al- mort obliterated on Tuesday, party lines were as ragged asa stake and rider fence. | Independence prevailed and few straight tickets were fonnd. Ou the boro ticket Geo. R. Meek, democrat, defeated Charley Cook, re. publican, for treasurer by 43. For years Mr. Cook has been invincible, but this time he did not have the right cue, and, as we predicted, after holding the office for five terms, he now must “Go way back, and sit down ?"’ W. J. Singer, democrat, came within four of defeating Isaac Underwood for auditor, Stewart Brouse, republican, was elected overseer of poor by only 23 over P. H, Gerrity, and had a close call. In the West Ward Dr, Kirk astonished the natives by laying C. T. Gerberich on | the shelf. Kirk is a democrat, in & heavy republican ward, but won by 31 majority, We must congratulate him on his splen. | did fight and compliment the ward for | selecting a really good man to represent them in our council, In the same ward Geo. Meek had so majority. In the South Ward, Henry Montgom. ery, republican, overcome a democratic majority and had 115 votes tospare. DD, Fortney! made a record, being re. elected by a majority of 171, Thus it went, cut and slash, without any outward disturbance or excitement, The war of ballots was fierce, but no bodily injuries are reported-—some few though were put out during the day from too much enthusiasm in fluid form, H Cons't.. | Clerk Some people play the piano as though THE ELECTION RETURNS. hu Jontinued 1 from page L, ) « P Pillshury ™., TF Kennedy ig wk) L Croyle 04 coer M 8 MeDowell 02 TS Bailey HD Meck 90 George CO Butz 75 sh Mingle 34 ah Ewing 8 Garner 110 Counell.. “LL Cltizens seh Drs.
