THE CENTRE DEMOCRAT, BELLEFONTE, PA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 1897. FIRE DESTROYS A BLOCK Thirty Buildings Destroyed in Philadelphia's Business Center, LOSS NEARLY TWO MILLIONS. One Man Drops Dead from Excitement and Two Firemen Injured--The Big City Hall Blistered by Heat and Flate Glass Windows Cracked -Epidemieo of Fires, PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 27.—A tiny spiral of smoke curled out of the cellar window of a big building on Market street at 6:50 o'clock in the morning. A few hours later one of the most valuable blocks of real es tate in the eity had been consumed in a raging flame. It was the block bounded by Market, Thirteenth, Filbert and Juniper streets, in the very heart of the city. A few stops to the right loomed the massive city hall, around the corner stands the great Pennsylvania railroad terminal. The total loss is variously estimated at from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000, but in the chaos and confusion now existing it is all but impossible to secure accurate figures The losses are very generally covered by insurance. The fire originated in the basement of the six story building extending from 1309 to 1817 Market street, oocupled in the lower floors by Hanscom Brothars, gro- cers, and above by the umbrella factory of Hirsh & Bro. The smoke was discov ered by a policeman, who promptly turned in an alarm, but the fire made such head way that before the engines could be put to ilding was a flames With un spread in work the 1 mtroll all dire fire rea 8 st contr of Wanar it started, and the en re thi that naxKer re | ment we n alm saving however, entirely de the along the Market street stroved, together valuable clock chimes; the r front was and a great deal of the st rod fr damaged, the front of the store suffe and water.
