The Grave In Woodlawn Cemetery Hide den Nonenth a Mass of Magnificent Flowers «— Distinguished and Representative Mournors, NEW YORK, Feb, 8.—A very fitting trib- ute to the memory of a lovely woman was the great coneourse of people that crowded 8t. Bartholomew's church at the eorner of Forty-fourth street and Madison avenue to pay the last respects to Mrs. William C. Whitney, the wife of ex-Secretary Whitney. A more distinguished gathering never attended a funeral in this city. There were all the people who compose the exclusive circles of the city represented in the gathering which soon crowded the ed ifice to the doors the world of politics was there, Elect Cleveland was one of the pallbearers, and no less than four ex-mayors of the city were also present. A number of the immediate friends of the family, together with the pallbearers, gathered at the residence and proceeded from there to the church. The chancel of the church and the space around the altar were banked deep with palms and lilies of the valley. The reading desk and pulpit were in wreaths of white chrysan- themums and lilacs, interspersed with splashes of roses and violets. The employees of the florist, each and every one of whom always received a Christmas present from Mrs. Whitney, sent a beauti- ful wreath of white roses. Rev. Dr. Greer and his assistant went up the central aisle to meet the funeral party | and preceded them back to the chancel re peating the familiar opening lines of the Episcopal service. Mr. W. C. Whitney, with his sisterin- law, Mrs. Bingham of Cleveland, leaning on his arm, came first, followed by Colonel Oliver Payne, Mrs. Whitney's sisters, Mrs Henry F. Dimock and Mrs. Charles F. Bar ney, her eldest daughter, Pauline, and the sons, Henry Payne and Willam Payne, to- gether with Mrs. Cleveland, who was lean ing on the arm of Mr. Don M. Dickinson In the party, too, were Mr. and Mrs. Stet son and Colonel and Mrs. Daniel Lamont, The coffin followed, a plain cedar casket trimmed and interlaced with flowers and bearing an immense purple spray across its face.
