GENERAL BUTLER DEAD His Fame as a Lawyer, Soldier and Statesman. A DISTINGUISHED CAREER, The Most Cordially Hated Man in Public Life, ; STORY OF HIS LIFE'S ONLY ROMANCE. Twice Defeated for the Governorship of Mussachusetts, and Once Elected —Sent to Congress and Mentioned as a Presi dential Possibility His ord as a Lawyer—How He Wooed and Won His Wife, Splendid Reeo- WasHiNGTON, Jan. 11. — Benjamin F, Butler, the lawyer, politician, statesman and millionaire manufacturer, died at his Washington residence, No. 220 New Jer sey avenue, southeast, at half-past 1 o'clock this morning. The general has always, to a more or a less extent, naade his residence in Wash- ington, although many of the scenes of his successful ventures have been located else- where. During the present winter a case BENJAMIN F, BUTLER which had been decided against him in the highest courts of the state of Massachu setts, and in whieh he took an appeal to the United States supreme court, has de manded his almost constant residence in this city. Every Monday he was a familiar figure at the sessions of that body on Mon day, when the decisions were handed down, Finally, a fow weeks ago, the case was decided against him. Whether or not the loss of the case, to which he had pald such close attention, brought anything more than the sorrows of a casual defeat will not be known. His death created an immense surprise, as it was not even known that he was all- ing, any more than any man who had ived and labored so long would. The ane nouncement this morning that he had died at 1:30 from heart failure caused great surprise. lea AN EVEXNTYUL CAREER. Brief Sketeh of a Life Spent Under the Light of Public Opinion. Benjamin Franklin Butler figured in more characters than any other public man of this age. There have been several abler generals, many more prominent statesmen, as many more eloquent attor neys, though very few as successful and perhaps a few as adroit politicians. But no other man played so many parts as well, from the place of small lawyer to that of proconsul in a captured city in the most delicate ern and difficult situation of the civil war The Butlers came among the first, and Ben's grandfather, Captain Zephaniah Butler, fought under Wolfe at Quebec and gained fame in the revolution, while his father, John, was a captain in 1812.15. His mother came of the Cilleys, a Scotch-Irish family, and the Cilley of New Hampshire who was killed in the noted duel was a cousin of the gen eral He was born at Deerfleld, N. H., Nov. § 1518; was graduated from the Baptist col to New England i nN I at Waterville, Me., in 1888, and wdmitted te was practice at the 183 to Miss Hildreth, the Massachusetts innol was married ir and became militia ir May sion of Baltimore, finding lent « Inter he was o mg time bar A general hr 1 180 181, General Butler took pomses, the turbu ind three days Iate ity as quiet as Lowell mmission] major general of volunteers commanding the partment of eastern Virginia, with headquarters at Fortress M mroe There he issaed the fa or decision, that “as slaves are fugitive slaves who miter our lines are contraband of war." and many a year passed before the freedmen teased to be called "contrabands March 23, 182, the so called “Butler ex pedition” reachtd and took possession of Ship Island; April 17 it started up the Mis sipsippi, and May 1 took formal possession of New Orleans. For the next twenty months General Butler was the most talked about and most thoroughly hated man in America, He has undoubtedly been threat ened with sudden death oftener than any other man in the world, except the czar of Russia, but verified the proverb by living long, Dec. 16, 1802, he was recalled, and he al. ways believed it was at the instigation of Louis Napoleon. Late in 1868 he was laced In command of the coast division of Virginia and North Carolina, his com. mand being afterward designated as the “Army of the James." In Decamber, 1864, General Butler joined in the “failure at Fort Fisher,” of which mous order property in Virginia #0 much has recently been sald, and soon after was removed from command by Gen- eral Grant, Of course no prominent American of the ern since 1850 has been quite consistent events moved too rapidly for that, But there Is a higher kind of consistency-that of always aiming at the best results—which many can claim; and General Butler al ways claimed for himself that in each new situation that developed he took that side which he thought best for the laboring Alllions, As an “Old Hunker Democrat’ he ran twice for governor of Massachusetts snd was overwhelming defeated—it gave BLANCHE BUTLER AMES him control of the federal patronage of the state, though—and in 1860, as a delegate to the Charleston convention, he voted fift y two times for Jefferson Davis. In 1866 he was elected to congress by the Republicans, but though he struggled long and earnestly for it they would never give him the governorship. In congress he was a hard and successful fighter till the Haves administration came in; then the issues on which he had fought seemed to become ob solete all at once, and on the new issues he was singularly unfortunate In 1852 there was a gleam of success: by a combination of Democrats and Green backers he became governor of Massa chusetts. His term as governor was plo turesque throughout. It is best remem bered, perhaps, by reason of the exposures of the abuses in the management of the Tewksbury almshouse. The next year's vote showed that his political power was on the wane, and the vote for president on the Greenback-Labor ticket in 1884 proved that it was not only waning, but was about “waned out.” Thereafter be ranked as one might call an Independent Demo cratio-Labor-Gresn backer, His early practice asa lawyer was largely for the poor, but since the war he has earned in some years as much as $150,000 in fees, his fee in one case being $100,000, The more intricate and difficult the case, the better he seemed to relish it. His mind. fully equipped with all legal weapons, raced over every commonplace road lead- ing to probable vietory and then found en Joyment in seeking out the most extraor BUTLER dinary path, and if the same result could be reached by that or Butler took it with the greatest deligh In all the life of the mas have been but irwe, General seems to there was deep and thrill with most cerned his marriage.
