f MR. BLAINE'S RELAPSE The Eminent Statesman Has a Very Narrow Escape. HIS PHYSIOIANS NOW HOPEFUL But All of His Family and Friends Admit That the Ex-Secretary’s Con. dition 1s Extremely Critical Blaine's Fortitnde. Ne all's Wasninaron, Dee. 19.—All day ves terday the life of James G. Blaine hung trembling mn the balance. For more than an hour in the forenoon hope was abandoned and the end was momentarily expected by physicians, family and friends. The first crisis was reached between 10 | and 11 o'clock in the forenoon, when a sinking spell set in, from which the worst was feared. His family were called round the bedside and the phe cians sent messenger arter messenge the nearest drug store with prescription requiring hasty attention. he distinguished patient Jay unscon scious, and to all appearance dying until shortly before 1 ph p. m. when a slight rally set in. His pulse, which had almost ceased to beat, became again pe ceptible, and partial conscionsness was restored. At 2 o'clock his physicians, Drs. Johnston and Hyatt, considered him so much improved as to render their constant presence at the bedside unnecessary. While there had been no marked ymprovement, and no change in his condition upon which hopes of ulti mate recovery could be based, the imn- mediate crisis had passed. From an intimate friend of the family it is learned that it was only when Mr. Blaine was suddenly seized with the sinking spell which threatened for some minutes to terminate in heart failure that his family fully realized how near he was to death. For a few he seemed to be “in extremis,” and the watchers bent anxiously over him. The emaciated face of the dying statesman was white as marble, and his featu sadly drawn. At times he scarcely seemed to breathe, and at others gasped for breath. The physicians who had been hastily summoned were in the meantime not idle. They plied him with stimmulative cordials, the trained nurses chafed his extremities, and it was only after working over the patient for upwards of thirty minutes and the app cation of every art known to the medical profession that Mr. Blaine slowly re vived. But the battle with death found him extremely weak, weaker than at any time when suffering a relapse, He was too weak even to whisper, and lay with no sign of recognition in his half closed eyes, The family gathered around the bed- side were all in tears, except Mrs. Blaine. She maintained outward com- posure throughout the trying scene, and calmly gave such directions to the at tendants as were necessary. Her will ywer, when in fact] her heart was reaking, is described as something pathetic and marvelous. Whatever might have been Mrs. Blaine's suspicion or knowledge of her hushand’s condition through all of the intervening months of his illness she has given no outward sign that would indicate that she did not believe in his recovery. It has been her cheerfulness under most trymg cir cumstances that has soothed her hus band's despondency, Wassisarox, Dec. 21.—Mr, Blaine is slightly better, but not sufficiently im proved to justify “opes of his ultimate recovery, for ve 7 he has andergone a perpetual mental .uain sufficient weaken less sternly fibred men in a week, but while his splendid physigne gave no outward sign of debility, the system, overworked and taxed to its ut most, has gradually weakened until to- day it is doubtful whether Mr. Blaine will live to see Christinas day. A recur rence of the alarming symptoms of Sun day last is what his physicians and the family most fear, as in his present weak ened state he could not withstand the attack The last bulletin from his bedside states that he is resting easily, with no immediate danger of death. seconds 4 to Dishonor and Suicide, Sr. Louis, Dec. 20.
