His family are his companions, and when he is not engaged in his public duties at tbo Capitol you are almost sure to find him with his family at home. The Bayards live very unpretentious ly at Washington, in a plain brick Mansion, large and roomy. The house furnished with a view to the com fort of the inmates rather than as an thi bition of the wealth of its owner, and therein it differs from the homes of most wealthy men in Washington, the engravings and paintings upon the walls are rare rather than numer -0M; the furniture is comfortable and itic rather than fashionable and itf Miles a Minute on a Tin Pan. Ill* PUUlmrg Telegraph. rthur Fitzpatrick, who returned i Colorado a short time ago, gives following glowing account of an rrence in the mining district*, of lb he was an eye-witness: " A Sr and some companions were Nng the Continental Divide when MM covered with snow. Three j| below them, down a decline of foitj-five degrees, deeply covered with flraaen snow, lay the spot they desired to peach, while to go round by trail VM fifteen miles. The miner took a tin pan, used for washing gold, spread his blanket over it, got in himself, in a squatting position on his haunches, , talked the blanket around, held his { rifie and other traps over his head and got one of his companions to give httt a push. He informed me he went don at the sfieetl of sixty mile* a S&>Ute, and shot far out iuto the val- : Ig|B at the foot of the mountain. A story, which scaudalizcd High Churchmen and surprised everybody, was published the other day in one of the journals to the efTect that the Primate of ull England intended to marry again. Mrs. Tait has beeu dead less tliau two years, and Dr. Tait is on the verge of 70; yet the story did not seem impossible. Such things have happened. Headers, however, who have felt the pathos of that re markable book which reveals to us so much of Dr. Tail's past married life will feel no little relief when they hear that the storv is a foolish invention. The Archbishop has at last begged his private secretary to contradict it. None of the Archbishop's friends, he says, could for a moment have believ ed the story. There is, of course, no j moral reason why a septuagenarian i archbishop should not marry again,' aud the ecclesiastical reason is of very doubtful force; hut it pleases one to believe that so good a man is faithful to the loving memory of so good a wife. •Realism on the Ktaire. • A real mule was one of the attrac tions recently in the play of " The Forty Thieves" as produced in Nevada City. The result is described by the Chronicle as follows : " No sooner had Ali come out of the cave with his bags of wealth and attempted to put them on the back of the beast than he be- j can his part of the performance. He | Tel fly with his heels, kicked the shnv- j ings (the supposed riches) out of the! bags, kicked down the cavern, kicked i I down the whole forest, kicked down | ) the wings, kicked the end of the has viol (leaning against the stage) to ; pieces, smashed the footlights and final- j ly doubled up Ali by putting both feet in the pit of his stomach. A rope was fastened around him, and he was drag ged off by the united strength of the company." AN Ohio thief used a wagon with a crooked wheel to draw awav stolen wood, and the constables caught him by following the eccentric track. ' Cheap Chinese Labor In .New Jersey. I'ATTKRSON, N. .1., Nov. />. —The Barbour Flax Spinning Co. have half a dozen Chinamen to work in one of their departments, to the great indig nation of the white men employed there. The firm say they are set at work which white men will not do. The employes tell a different story, and have an idea that this is the commencement of the general em ployment of Chinese labor. There is no trouble nor any threatened dis disturbance, but it is reported that several silk manufacturers nre con templating the introduction of Chinese labor, and that this is the cause of much excitement among the working men here. There is a good ileal of talk over it, but whether it will amount to anything is not certain, ! though it appears that there is an in- J tention among some of the manufac turers to employ Chinese.
