Lu-t of the Fusion Government in
Maine.
Aiuista, Me., Isn'y 28. —The ration
Legislature, after ft prolonged secret e.-
linn this afternoon, udjouined to meet
on the first Wednesday in August next.
Many of the members will go home, not
to return here before that day. Other*
will go back to the people of their dis
tricts, to abide by their decision as to
joining or remaining out of the State
House Legislature, and other* will take
their seats among their Republican
brethren. The counted-in members
will, some of them, go home, while oth
ers will contest the seats of their rivals
in the Capitol. The fusionist Governor
Smith will return to his home in old
town to morrow, and MI. Talbot, Speak
er of the fusion House, will also leave
for his domicil to-morrow.
In the Republican Senate the com
mittee on the judiciary was instructed
to in-fuire as to amending tbe constitu
tion of the State by abolishing the coun
cil, providing for tbe election of an
auditor, and constituting the heads of
departments the advisers of the Gov
ernor. In the House Messrs. Hill, of
Corinth. and Milliken.of Hurnham, (fu
tionists,) appeared and took their seats.
Some fusionista claim that it is their
honest purpose and intention to meet
on the day named, and that they will
enter upon campaign work for
the next election, endeavor to have two
return* of congressional votes, one to
be sent to them and another to the
legislature as recognised by the courts,
and that they will make up a case to
• ongr-ss concerning the electoral vote.
The Republicans, and quite a number
of fusionisu, say that such an adjourn
ment was the easiest possible way oi
letting down tbe oouoted-in members,
who have given their associates a good
deal of trouble; that the fusion Legis
lature will never again meet, as will be
shown to-morrow by its member* taking
seats in the regular Legislature. The
Legislature will declare vacant all seats
that are now filled, and new elections
will bo ordered. Maj. Smith will leave
for home on the early morning train to
attend to his lumbering business. He
recommends the quiet submission of all
goo I citizens to the will of the court.
fusion Secretary of State Sawyer has
promised to return the valuation boftks
to the office of the Secretary of State,
and it is thought that he will not claim
to be Secretary any longer. The opinion
prevails that Treasurer White will freely
surrender tbe keys and property of the
offices* soon as his successor is qualified.
