Camp Dick Robinson reports a fight yesterday between the Rebel General, Zollicoffer, with from 6000 to 7000 men and Col. Garrard, with 1200 men, at Camp Wild Cat. Zollicoffer made three dif ferent attacks, and each time repulsed with considerable loss. The Federal loss was four killed and twenty wounded. The courier met reinforcements, consisting of one regi ment with artillery, on the road to Col. Gar rard's camn. Pennsylvania's Quota Filled. HARKISBURG, Oct. 19.- -In consequence of the recent requisition made upon Pennsylva nia by the National Government, the im pression seems to have gone abroad that a large number of regiments ;>re s<ill required, and Gov. Curtin is beset with applications to accept new regiments. This is an error. Pennsylvania has al ready a sufficient number of regiments to meet all the requisitions made upon her by the National Government, and they are now being filled and equipped as rapidly as could be desired: Gov. Curtin, therefore, has no power to accept any new regiments at this time. Excitement at Terre Haute, Ind, TKRRK HAUTE, Ind., Oct. 21. —Two or three companies of the Third Indiana Vol unteers, stationed at Camp Vigo, in this city, under the command of their Colonel, quietly proceeded to the office of the' Journal and Democrat newspaper this evening, and in a short time demolished everything.— They then proceeded to several private hou ses and served them in the same manner.— The citizens are organizing and preparing to proceed to take their camp, and great ex cieement prevails throughout the city to night, in consequence of the conduct of the soldiers. MR. EI.V, of Rochester, N. Y., who is a prisoner in the hands of the reblcsat Rich mond, has sent intelligence of the death, at that place, of Mr. Calvin Huson, who was taken prisoner - the day after the battle of Bull Run. Mr. Huson had been ailing for some time. He was a student of law in the office of Hon. Wm. H. Seward, whose niece he subsequently married ; had graduated at Geneva College, N. Y., and was engaged in the practice of the law for the last fourteen years. THE CHEMISTRY OF MEDICINE. —Bmong the spe cial delights which so richly repaid our visit to New England was the inspecticn, it was our priv ilege to make of Dr. Ayer A Co.'s Laboratory, at Lowell. Although we knew by hear-say, that it was large, yet we were surprised when we came into view of its real magnitude, and style more by the extent aud complication of its truly im - mense business. The whole mossivo structure is in fact one vast chemical laboratory, in which the processes of this wonderful art are constantly go ing on. Medico-chemical science has found that the curative propertiesuf any substance exist in some oi eor more of its component parts. Thus the remedial effects of opium are due solely to the morphia it containo, although this is but one e enth part of its weight pthe ethor seventeen parts are gum, extractive and inert or offensive matter Dr.Ayer's system separotes the medical properties o, each substance employed and we aro here shown the pre cesses by which the virtues of each remedial agent are chased through the alem bics until they come out completely pure at last. These concentrated, purified medical properties, or virtues, are finally combined together to pro duce the remedies which have made themselves a reputation for unrivalled excellence, ail over the world. Net only doer the Doctor disclaim all so crecy in his art and explain every process and every particular bqt b j maintains that this is the only process by whicn the people can be supplied with the best possible remedies for the treatment of diseases. The Formula by which his remedies are made are published in the medical Journals aDd have been presented to a large part of the medical Faculty of the United States, and are constantly sent by mail to such physicians as ap ply for them. — Daily Chronicle, Sun Francisco. yr.is~ Refer to the advertisements of HOOF LAND'S GERMAN BITTERS, in another column.— These Bitters arc are the best remedy known for tho cure of liver Complaint and Bilious diseases. THE WONDERS OF THE MICROSCOPE. —We under stand it is through tho agency of this marvel viewing instrument that Dr. Ayer has at length succeeded in finding the PAI.DDAL MIASM and de termining its character. Of its effects we in this section have abundant evidence in the A CUE which it alone .produces when nbsorbed through the lungs into the blood. - It has long been held to be a vapor or something in the vapor of water from decayed and decaying vegctatien. Under a great magnifying power, ihe Doctor has found this vapor to contain distinct organisms or living bodies, corresponding precisely with those found in the blood of Ague subjects. They are 13,000 times loss than visible to the naked eye, but have distinct character and form. He thinks they arc reproductive in deca in decaying matter or in the blooi, and hence their long continued life or thn remote cfiects of them in the system.— He quintains that they resemble in character the other fermentative poisons, or such as the virus of rabies of a dead b idy, Ac., all cf which are known to reproduce themselves with great rapidity like yeast in moistened flour, so teat the slightest duantity impregnates, the whole mass. Yeast through a powerful magnifier is seen to be a for est of vegetation which grows, blossoms, and goes to seed in a short time. Missm is not so distinct ly vegetable, but has more the appearance of ani mal life, although its motions cannot be perfectly distinguished. What the Doctor claims to have settlen is thut it is an organic substance and he has further found and embodied in his " Agug Cure" what will destroy it.— Leader, St. Louis, Mo. have been shown a document signed by thy Mayors in office of the cities of the United States and Conada, certifying to the superior ex cellence of Dr. Ayer's Compound Extract of Sar sapatilla and to the value of all his remedies as articles of great public utility. Such evidence from such high sources bears us out triumphantly in the position we have long maintained with re gard to Dr. Ayer's preparations, or more particu larly our advertisement of them. No publishers neea be more opposed than we are to the promul gation of quackery ih any shape, but we knew when wo began, that his remedies were above any suspici n of deception—that they were about the best it is possible to produce for the cure of dis ease, and that they have the confidence of all communities where they are known. Not alone because the Mayors of the whole country believe them useful to their people, but because we know from experiende that they are - so to ours, do we believe we are rendering a substantial service to our readers in making their virtues known to them.— Courier, Princeton, Ky. Prof. Wood's Restorative Cordial and Blood Renovaior, for the cure of genera Debility, or Weakdess arising from any cause; also, Dys pepsia, Norvousness, Night Sweats, Incipient Consumption, Diver Complaints, Biliousness, Loss of Appetite, Female Weakness in all stages ; also to prevent the contraction of disease, is certainly the best and most agreeable cordial tonic and Renovator ever offered to the afflicted, and so chemically combined as to be the most powerful tonic ever known to medical science. Reader try try it. It will do you good. We have no hesita tion in recommending it, since we know it to be a safe, pleasant, and sure remedy for the diseases enumerated. See advertisement. Read the advertisement respecting " Dr. Leland's Anti Rheumatic Band," in another col umn, According to the report of those who have tried it—and who have been cured of the most violent attacks of Rheumatism—there is no reme dy extant equal to this in case of Rheumatism— and having no reason to doubt the statements we have heard in favor of the " Band," we cordially reccommend its use to those who are afflicted with this disease. Be sure aijd read the advertisement most carefully. THEE CEIVTRE DEMOCH-AT. BARGAINS! ! From J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of the En cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects, I yet know of no sufficient reason why a man way not testify to the bene fit.he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that ho may thus contribute to ihe benefit of others. I do this more.readily in regard to " Hoofland's German Bitters," prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for years, under the impression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture. lam indebt ed to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for encoragement to try them, when suffering from great and long continued debility. Rattle Creek, Mich., Dec. 21st, 1858. PROF. WOOD : —Thee wilt please accept a line to inform thee that the hair on my head all fell off over twenty years ago, caused by a complicated chronic disease, attended with an eruption on (he head. A continual course of suffering through life having reduced me to a state of dependence, I have not been able to abtain stuff for caps, neither have I been able to do them up, in conse quence of which my head has suffered extremely from cold. This induced mo to pay Briggs A Hodges almost the last cent I had on earth for a two dollar bottle of thy Hair Restorative about the first of August last. I have faithfully follow ed the directions and the ba'd spot is now covered with hair thick and black, though short, it is also coming in all over my head. Feeling confident tt at another large bottle would restore it entirely and permanently, I feel anxious to persevere in its use, and being destitute of means te purchase any more, I would ask thee if thee wouldst not be wilting to send me an order on thine agents for a bottle, and receive to thyself the scripture decla ration—" the reward is to those that are kind to the widow and the fatherless." Tby friend, SUSANNA U KIRBY. Ligonier, Noble Co., Ind., Feb. sth, 1851). PROF. 0. J. WOOD : Dear Sir:—ln the latter part of the year 1852, while attending tbo Stats and National Law School of the State of New York, my hair, from a cause unknown to me, com menced falling off very rapidly, so that in the short space of six months, the whole upper part of my scalp was almost entirely bereft of its cover ing. an-t much of the remaining portion upon the side and back part of my head shortly after be came gray, so that you will not be surprised when I tell yon that upon my return to the State of In diana, my tnore casual acqu- intances were nut so muen at a loss to discover the eauscof the change in my appearaucs, as my more intimate acquaiu ces were to recognize me at all. I at once made application to the most skillful physicians in the country, but, receiving no as surance from them that my hair could again he restored. I was forced to become reconciled to my fate, until, fortunately, in the latter part of the year 1857, your Restorative was recommended to tne by a druggist, as being the most reliable Hair Restorative in use. I tried one bottle, and found to my great satisfaction that it was producing the desired effect. Since that time, I have used seven dollars*" worth of your Restoralive, and as a re sult, have a rich coat of very soft black hair, which r.o money can buy. As a mark of my gratitude for your labor and skill in the production of so wonderful an article, I have recommended its use to many of my friends and acquaintances, who, I am happy to inform you, are using it with like effect. Very respect fully, yours, A. M. LATTA, Attorney and Counsellor at Law. Depot, 4-11 Broadway, and sold by all dealers throughout the world. A YER : Sir, I cheerfully comply with tlio re quest of your agent, and report to you some of the effects I have realised with your Sarsapariila. 1 have cured with it, in my practice, meet of the com plaints for which it is recommended, and have found its effects truly woixlerfnl in the cure of Venereal and Mer estriol Disease. One of my patients had Syphilitic ulcers iu his throat, which were consuming his palate and the top of liis mouth. Your Sarsapariila. steadily takeu, cured him in five weeks. Another was attacked by sec ondary symptoms in his nose, and the ulceration "had oaten aw ay a considerable part of it, so tlmt I believe tho disorder would soon reach liis brain and kill him. But it yielded to my administration of your Sarsapariila; the ulcers healed, and he is well again, not of course without tome disfiguration to his face. A woman who had been treated for the same disorder liy mercury was suffering from this poison in her hones. They had become so sen sitive to the weather that on a damp day she suffered ex cruciating pain in her joints and bones. She, too, was cured entirely by your Sarsapaiiilla ii a few weeks. I know from its formula, whicU your agent gave me, that this Preparation from your laboratory mast he a great remedy; consequently, these truly remarkable results with it have not surprised me. fraternally youis, 6.
