W. E. Garrett Gllmere. of the Bach elors' Barge Club, earned the right te row in the race for the Philadelphia Geld Challcnge Cup tomorrow after noon by defeating J. II. Durnan, of Canada, and Themas J. Rooney, of the Undine Barge Club, yesterday after noon en the Schuylkill River. He finished six lengths of open water nhcad'ef Durnan, who in turn was two lengtns ei open water nnenti or lioeney. Gilmere's time was 7.30V6 and Dur nan's, 7.31 3-5. Throughout the race rain fell and a slight wind blew almost straight up the course from the start te the trolley bridge. Frem that point te the finish the breeze was across the course, but was no handicap te the contestants. Gilmere and Durnan rowed leisurely te the finish line a couple minutes after (1. and Itoenev followed a few minutes Inter. Up held It for nbent ten strokes, when Gilmere, who rowed a little slower stroke, caught up te and pnsscd him. The Canadian passed Rooney at the quarter-mile pest, but did net held the place long, and at the) trolley bridge the men were almost abreast. The wind up stream evidently bothered Gilmere, for as seen as he passed the bridge the water was smoother and he went into the lead. However, Durnan spurted and with much effort caught Gilmere before the half-mile pest was reached. The Bacheler was net te de led, and he uncorked n spurt nnd held it for nn eighth of a mile when Durnan again caught him. The effort was tee great for the Canadian and at the three quarter mile pest Gllmere was leading by a length of open water, Rooney being several lcngthB behind. Gllmere Increases Lead Nearing Peter's Island Durnan spurted again, but Gllmere did the same nnd increased his lead until he was about four lengths ahead at the island. Frem that point be did net even hnve te row hard and at th finish was six lengths ahead. Tem Rooney, who started in the middle position, steered a bnd course nnd finished well toward the western side of the river. Coach Frank Miller, of the Bache lors, was much pleased with Gilmere's victory and feels that he has excellent chances of winning the Geld Cup to morrow. His easy victory ever Rooney came as a surprise te many, as the lntter defeated him en Saturday in the American Henley Regatta ever the mile nnd five -sixteenths course. How ever, the water en Saturday was very rough nnd Rooney Is a geed oarsman in rough water, but conditions yester day were mere favorable. The ether entrants in tomorrow's race arc Walter L.
