There are only four primary taste nmsatlens sweet, sour, bitter nnd salt. .There Is a separntc set of nerves for Hh of these sensntiens of taste. The back of the tongue is mere sensitive te bitter, nnd the sides nnd tip of the tongue enable us te taste sweet nnd acid flavors. We nrc able te perceive a salty taste mere quickly than any ether. A pccullnr thing nbeut taste is that while bodily fatigue, for instnnce, diminishes the ncuteness of the sense of smell, it has no effect whatever en our sense of taste. Scattered ever the mi r face of the teniue and the soft palate arc Rtrange little egg-shnped bodies called "taste bads." These arc the end organs or the end part of the nerves of taste, by Uch the properties pertaining te the letue of taste nrc recognized. These tre mero numerous- at the back of the teniue, although they are widely scat tered ever the entire tongue and palate. In t child, the tissues lining the cheek and the entire upper surfnee of the tenjue are sensitive te taste. The elder we get the smaller the area of taste be comes and almost disappears with very old age. The nerves of taste are distributed te tha point and upper portion of the teajue, the lower part of the Koft palnte, net Including the uvuln (a fleshy conical body attached te the soft palate and hanging at the back part of the tongue) ; thi back of the soft palate, which is connected with Hie reef of the mouth; tha epiglottis, n leaf-shaped cartilage which covers the upper part of the (vjnx, and wen inside the larynx or Medplpe itself. Many se-called feed flavors axe only recognized by the combined sense of lute and smell. Without sense of small, it might be hard te "tell an onion from an apple." Monday Hew Did Bread Originate?
